Do you struggle keeping peace in a multi pet home?

Animals have a lot of similarities with people. Not everyone just gets along with anyone! When we bring animals into our families, we have to help them adjust and provide them tools to succeed.

One, we never force our animals to interact with each other if they don’t want to. Some of our animals are incredibly social, but not playful. Some playful, but not dog social. Some love cuddles and touch, and others want to be in the same room but left alone.

However, there still needs to be peace within the home. Personalities may conflict, but we always advocate for respect and boundaries within the family dynamic. This means dogs, cats, bunnies, chickens, all of them have specific rules and a basis of respecting each others space.

If your pup needs help adjusting to life with the family, we are happy to help. Creating a cohesive and peaceful household is what we do ❤️

Harmful ways of punishing dogs behavior

We have seen a few videos recently coming up with using some aversive methods inappropriately. Now as a balanced trainer, I am an advocate for how tools can help dogs live full, complete lives, especially dogs that wouldn’t have been able to before. Tools can absolutely save the lives of dogs when positive reinforcement just isn’t enough.

However, a lot of the aversive strategies we have seen lately may seem harmless in the moment, but can actually cause more damage. Ever wonder why your dog hates the groomer after using a sq**rt bottle as punishment? There is a negative association with objects that your dog will likely have to encounter at some point.

Another example is the can of coins. Shaking the can at your dog when they’re barking or getting rowdy can cause sound aversion, and now your dog may be more afraid of thunderstorms, speakers, or sudden loud sounds. That’s not what we want for our pups, because these things are a guarantee in the world. There’s nothing we want more than for our dogs to go into the world without fear.

If you need to stop a behavior, there are tools that have countless studies of being able to help dogs understand when a behavior is not acceptable without creating fear. Loud noises and sq**rt bottles are realistic things your dog will have to deal with, so it doesn’t make sense to punish them using those things.

If you’re looking for the best ways to stop a dogs problem behavior, we can help. Not only can we help stop it, we can help you and your dog have more freedom and access in the real world. Send us a message if you have questions, we’re here to help.

Winston LOVES his red Kong toy, and we play with it every time I come over. Most times, he beats me to getting it. Other times, he’s forgotten where he’s left it and we have to go on a little hunt! 😂🥰

Could you accidentally be making your dogs fear worse?

If your dog is fearful of something, whether people or dogs to cars and fireworks, many people try to shield them from the stimulus that scares their dog. Inevitably, when we shield them too much, we perpetuate the fear.

Think of your dogs emotions towards things as a sliding scale. Your dog has positive associations with certain things; the leash, their food bowl, the sound of a treat bag. They also have negative associations, which trigger a fear response, and can be oddly specific. It can even be static coming off blankets from the dryer!

If we think about their reactions as a sliding scale, we want to move them from negative emotions to more neutral. We do this by introducing the stimulus little by little and making them incredibly positive. Start small, and don’t be in a rush. If your dog is afraid of fireworks, a good way to work through it is by playing fireworks videos, or microwave popcorn while doing something fun! Play with your dog, feed them, and watch their body language. Gradually get closer to the replication of the fireworks sounds. This is called desensitization.

Of course, these are examples, and not every dog is the same. Sometimes it takes a bit of creativity, a lot of patience, and understanding to help our dogs through fear. The good news is that once you do, your dog will be happier and enjoy a less stressful lifestyle.

If your dog struggles with fear, there is no problem in needing help! Navigating phobias safely and effectively can take some time, and having a professional guide you and your pup can make it that much easier. Message us if your dog struggles with fear; we want to see your dog thrive!
