So, you think you are ready to rescue. Let's talk about this honestly. Animals that are being rehomed are psychologically damaged. They may be sick with parasites, or other illnesses. They have been uprooted from their pack, and even if they were treated poorly or neglected, this was normal for them. When they come to you, they will be afraid of being abandoned again. They may show this by house soiling, or even by damaging property. Feeling sorry for them and babying them increases their anxiety, it doesn't lessen it. Making excuses for poor behavior years after adoption just shows that their issues have never been addressed, and that they have developed new problems, not that they are still suffering from old ones. All pets, whether they are rescues or not, need calm, confident, quiet, LEADERSHIP. Animals lose their parents at a few months old-they don't need mommies, they need leaders.
Rescuing animals is not easy. It is not inexpensive. It requires time, financial responsibility, and patience-a lot of patience. Please be willing to accept this responsibility, and don't expect your veterinarian to do this for you because you "rescued" a pet.
With this being said, rescuing animals can be very fullfilling and rewarding, and people who do this with full commitment are true heroes. If you choose to rescue, be ready to jump off the deep end and swim for your life. If you can't make the committment, or you want to "try an animal and take it back if it doesn't work out", please just don't do it. You are doing more harm than good. Animals deserve better. If you have questions about rescue, or are having issues with a rescued pet, we are here to help. Please, give us a call before you break another heart. ππ
