LightSpring Virtual Veterinary Care

LightSpring Virtual Veterinary Care Punctual, Comprehensive, Compassionate, and Educational Virtual Veterinary Care for animals in the state of Virginia. I love veterinary medicine.

While not a replacement for in-person veterinary care, I can diagnose and prescribe medication for many common issues. My unique background combines extensive mixed-animal clinical experience, communicating with large animal and small animal owners, comfort with virtual communication technologies, and a deep understanding of the challenges many face in accessing quality veterinary care. I've seen

how video conferencing can maintain the human connection that's essential to the veterinarian-client relationship, while removing many obstacles to services. LightSpring Virtual Veterinary Care is the culmination of my journey - a practice built to provide the thorough, compassionate service I believe in, delivered in a way that meets clients and their animals where they are. By bridging distances through technology, I can continue my lifelong mission of helping animals while accommodating the needs of my own family. I look forward to connecting with you and your animals through this innovative approach.

I’ve been absent on social media of late. I took a temporary full-time position at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA while they were in between veterinarians.

I’m now back to providing virtual care, working on a press release, and growing my business. This ice and snow have been brutal! If you (or someone you know) needs care for their animal friend, I’m available!

My dog, Harper, says it’s better to stay inside on these cold, cold days. 🙂 (Especially if you have a big, fluffy bed to nap in!)

Shared with permission. PSA: vaccinate your pets!

I’m working at the Charlottesville SPCA and this kitty was brought in by animal control. It was attacking dogs and people on a trail in the city.

Very unusual behavior.

I wanted to euthanize it right away, but because 1) it had not bitten any person, 2) my staff have never seen rabies, and 3) I’m new and my staff don’t have a reason to trust my expertise to euthanize what appears to be a healthy young cat…. I opted to watch it overnight.

What I was unable to capture fully on camera was the erratic behavior of the kitten: chirping, then growling. Open-mouth panting. Clear agitation.

I’ll post the next morning’s video in the comments.

It was far more agitated and unable to swallow, despite licking food and water. After it was sedated and euthanized, its temp was 105.8, meaning it was likely over 107 prior.

This cat tested positive for rabies.

Edited to add a comment about my decision to monitor instead of immediately euthanize:

I’ve questioned my decision. However, I think I made the right one for a few reasons.

One, animal shelter staff are committed to the welfare and well-being of every animal. Euthanizing a young cat should not be taken lightly. If you watch the original video, the cat’s abnormal behavior was subtle. (The next morning’s video in the comments is more dramatic.)

Two, we do 10-day holds for animals that have bitten someone. Being able to document the rapid deterioration of this cat allows for training to know what to look for in future cases.

Three, I have now built trust while giving those who do the day-in, day-out care of shelter animals a voice in their care and fate.

I never want to prolong an animal’s suffering, but I made the choice to give this cat another 12 hours on the minuscule chance it was not rabies. I don’t have a crystal ball, only information.

Owl release was a success!

Fly free little owl! It was lovely experience - 5 kiddos and 4 adults watched it fly off into the evening. We all hold out hope that it will find its family like Stellaluna.

Grateful for the care of Wildlife Center of Virginia!

On June 23rd, this juvenile Screech owl was hit by a car by my friend. It was sitting in the road (it was dark) and fluttered up into the front of my friend’s truck. My friend stopped his truck and walked around until he found the little owl. He thought it was dead, but it took a breath. It was unconscious, but alive. He put it on his lap to drive it home so it wouldn’t die alone, and he was prepared to dispatch it if it was suffering.

To his surprise, the little thing came to and rode on his dashboard.

He called me asking for advice, and I suggested he put it in a cat carrier, and I would come and collect it.

My exam did not reveal any obvious fractures but did indicate a blow to the head, evidenced by two different-sized pupils. I kept it in our garage overnight to help it stay warm. I did not offer food, but did offer it a teeny bit of water, unsure if it would be able to drink. Then I took it to the Wildlife Center of Virginia the next morning.

It was diagnosed with rodenticide toxicity (the cause for its weakness and why it was sitting in the road) and a fractured fibula (from its impact with the truck.) Since then, it has been treated with Vitamin K and rest. It has attended mouse school to learn how to hunt and feed itself.

This evening it will be released! I will pick it up at the end of the day and drive it back to the spot where it was found, and we will release it at dusk! I’m so excited! (I’ll post the video if I can capture it.)

The Wildlife Center operates on donations. If you’d like to donate to help me celebrate this little cutie’s amazing story, I would be thrilled.

Wildlife injuries don’t often have happy endings. I’m so glad this one does.

Harold the pig is mobile!

He responded so well to acupuncture by Dr. Callison that he injured a rear dewclaw. It was a really tough week for him, and we were not sure he was going to pull through.

But he’s eating so well, he’s not on any medications, and he’s mobile!

He is still requiring assistance to rise, but he is gaining strength day by day.

Cheer with me! Yay, Harold!

Traveling down memory lane this morning. This newspaper article was published across the state of VA in February of 2007. It was a great honor and a great experience to travel to CO for 3 separate leadership courses. I learned much about myself, and it is where my knowledge and love of the DISC personality assessment was born.

Happy to coordinate care with Dr. Callison (Personal Vet Care, PLLC) to do acupuncture for Harold the pig at Autumn Olive Farms. I've known Dr. Callison since she was a vet student and her expertise is so valuable.

Harold continues to make progress day by day. Keep sending the good vibes his way!
