We often hear the phrases ‘small dog syndrome’ or ‘he thinks he’s bigger than he is’.
The truth is smaller dogs can get louder because they need to shout to be heard. Because they get it rough.

They get manhandled, laughed at and lifted from their feet without warning. The smallest often have the littlest control over their lives. These dogs are very aware of their size and that’s why they need to make sure they are heard.

🚫 Why I Don’t Groom New Client Dogs Over 11 Years Old 🐾

As a groomer, my priority is always the safety and emotional well-being of the dogs in my care. For this reason, I do not accept new grooming clients over the age of 11. Here’s why:

🧠 Grooming is not something dogs just “tolerate”, it’s something they learn to accept. That acceptance only comes with exposure and consistency over time. Waiting long periods between grooms, especially because a dog is “scared”, only makes things worse. Avoidance reinforces fear.

🐶 Dogs can’t become comfortable with grooming if they aren’t regularly exposed to it. Imagine trying to learn a new skill once every 6 months while also being anxious, it would feel impossible. The same goes for our pets. Frequent, gentle exposure is how they build trust and learn the grooming routine is safe.

💔 Senior dogs have unique challenges. At this stage in life, unfamiliar handling, standing for extended periods, and new environments can be physically and emotionally overwhelming, especially for dogs who are not used to regular grooming.

✨ My goal is to create a positive, low-stress experience for every dog. That starts early, is built over time, and depends on consistency not avoidance.

So if your dog is younger or new to grooming, don’t wait. The sooner they learn, the safer and happier their grooming experience will be.

Grooming isn’t just about looks, it’s part of your dog’s healthcare.

I recently groomed a Labrador retriever with a normal, healthy coat. Five weeks later, he came back and I noticed strange skin lesions under his coat that looked like ringworm. I urged the owners to see a vet and the dog was diagnosed with lymphoma.

He had no other symptoms, and those lesions were hidden beneath his thick double coat. Without regular grooming, they might not have been found until much later.

This is an important reminder:
➡️ Even short-haired dogs like Labs need regular grooming every 6–8 weeks.
➡️ Groomers are often the first line of defense in spotting changes to the skin, coat, or overall condition.

So whether your dog gets haircuts or not, routine grooming helps keep them healthy, comfortable, and monitored. 🐶🖤
