Lending A Helping Paw is our purpose. Lend A Helping Paw® Shih Tzu Rescue (LAHPSTR) is an all-volunteer, Michigan-based 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of abused, neglected, abando

ned, displaced, or otherwise homeless, fluffy, small-breed dogs, primarily Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apsos. We also operate a Forever Foster “sanctuary” program where dogs may live out their natural lives, if adoption is not possible due to age, health, or behavior. We are headquartered in South East Michigan and our dogs are fostered in private homes across the US. We currently adopt within the continental US (subject to applicable regulations for the import of dogs) and offer free transport by air (in cabin) or road to most out-of-state adopters. Clark Pennsylvania is 8!

This handsome boy, deemed difficult, was adopted by his foster family in 2021.

There is no question that he has needed years of patience and consistency, but tell me such moments of tenderness are not worth the effort.

Clark is an awesome brother to Gladys the Pug, Curtis the Tzu, and human little sister, Margaux.

Thank you, Alison and Franz, for loving him through thick and thin.

Where does the time go?

Hagan South-Carolina, now Mochi, was adopted in Michigan a year ago. Last 2 photos are from when he flew to Detroit as a 3-month-old puppy.

Mochi was one of a litter of 5 born in rescue to Hazel who came into rescue very pregnant after her guardian's death.

His Mom says, "Happy Gotcha Day, Mochi! One year ago we picked up this wonderful boy and he immediately became a member of our family. He is sweet, quiet, loving, funny and independent. We cant imagine life without him. Thank you for giving us a chance with Mochi!"

We are pleased to announce that we have achieved the Candid (formerly GuideStar) 2026 Platinum Seal of Transparency, reflecting our ongoing commitment to publicly share information regarding our operations, regardless of our organizational size.

We always welcome questions as well.

As some of you may be aware, in the past, we have been targeted by harassers and stalkers who publicly spread lies and allegations, defaming the rescue and that FM in the process. Their intention was to have us canceled, as shown by written evidence.

Thankfully, we have always kept meticulous records for both rescue operations and the harassment and stalking incidents.

Today, importantly, we continue our mission with the support of some of the kindest and most generous people with a heart for small dogs in need.

If that is you, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts.💚

In the blink of an eye, it is grooming time again! Floof clouds galore!

While our rescue has stepped back from social media and closed intake for now, our labor of love still continues with the dogs already in our care.

Rory Nebraska has settled in well and his appetite is normal now. He has laid claim to a comfy spot to hang out and sleep, but will cuddle on that FM's bed at night every now and then.
