As I drive the residents through the beautiful Wayne County, PA countryside on our outings, the dogs breathe in the fresh air while I find myself staring at all the old barns.

Some are still beautifully maintained. Others are slowly being reclaimed by the earth. I can’t help but wonder about the animals, farm families, and generations of work that once filled them.

Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to them. I’ve chosen, in my own way, to live that kind of life. Less rushing. Less noise. More land, animals, old dogs, homemade food, muddy boots, and work that actually means something.

Life With Old Dogs has never been just about the dogs. It’s about the life I’ve built around them and, more and more, about opting out of modern society wherever I can in favor of something slower, simpler, and more intentional.

Friday was a busy one here at Woody’s Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary.

There was laundry to do, including Sashi’s reusable diapers and pads, muddy mats to clean, and plenty of the usual chores. But I promised the girls a nice long walk if they behaved, and they did, so off we went.

Afterward, Sashi got cleaned up and into a fresh diaper, the girls rested while I worked, and later we headed out for a long country ride. We came across turkeys in the road and a deer who was in absolutely no hurry to move, which is pretty typical around here.

Then it was home for dinner, a few more chores, and finally some rest.

Nothing fancy. Just walks, laundry, muddy paws, country roads, dinner, and caring for old dogs.

Some of those claims sound pretty convincing.

But before you spend your money, there are a few things I think every senior dog parent should consider.

The next chapter of Woody’s Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary is starting to take shape, and I’m so excited to finally share a little more about what I hope to create.

I have a very large barn here on the property, and my goal is to renovate a portion of it into additional space for Woody’s Place. Rather than building something completely new, I want to thoughtfully transform part of this existing structure into a finished, heated space designed specifically around the needs of senior German Shepherds.

The vision includes comfortable, senior-friendly flooring, plenty of open living space, much-needed storage and closet space, and a dedicated grooming station that will make everyday sanctuary care much more efficient. I also want to include one separate kennel area for a dog who may arrive frightened, overwhelmed, or simply not ready to join the general population right away. Having a quiet, safe place to decompress can make such a difference for a newly rescued senior.

And one of my biggest hopes for the future is to eventually add a hydrotherapy tank. For older dogs dealing with arthritis, weakness, mobility loss, or recovery from injury, having access to hydrotherapy right here at the sanctuary could be an incredible resource.

This expansion is not about taking in as many dogs as possible. It is about creating a better, more functional environment for the seniors who depend on Woody’s Place and making sure we have the space and resources to care for them properly.
Right now, our Givebutter expansion fundraiser has a little over $21,000 in it, and I would absolutely love to see us reach $30,000 by the end of September.

Every donation, whether it is $5, $25, $50, or more, helps move this project forward. It helps us turn an existing barn into a warm, safe, practical sanctuary space where displaced senior German Shepherds can spend their remaining years surrounded by comfort, dignity, and love.

Woody's Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary has always been about giving once homeless senior German Shepherds safety, comfort, patience, and a place where they can simply be.
But somewhere along the way, I realized this life gives me many of those same things.
As someone with AuDHD, I can become dysregulated pretty quickly when I spend too much time in the noise, expectations, and constant stimulation of the outside world.
So a lot of my days look just like this.
Walking through the fields. Dogs nearby. Fresh air. No rushing. No pretending. No need to be anything other than who I am.
I created Woody’s Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary to give old dogs a softer place to land.
I just didn’t realize they were creating one for me, too.

A lot has been happening here at the farm, and it finally feels like I am getting back on track.

In the newest episode of Life With Old Dogs, I’m catching everyone up on our house, which is now about 98 percent complete, the residents of Woody’s Place, the upcoming sanctuary expansion, and the reopening of the Shepherd Shop.

I’m also sharing news about my personal Substack, Life Between Dog Walks, and the return of Canines in the Country in fall 2027. We are tentatively looking at the third week of September for a day devoted to dogs and the humans who love them, right here at the farm.

I love the words Dolly Parton spoke about taking yourself out of the game because you’re afraid of losing.
If you never step forward, you never give yourself the chance to win.
Life isn’t only about winning, of course. It’s about showing up. Trying. Growing. Becoming better than you were yesterday, and hopefully helping someone else rise along the way.
I think Dolly lived that beautifully. She achieved extraordinary things, but she also used what she built to give back, lift others up, and make life a little better for the people around her.
Dog rescue feels a lot like that to me.
You know you can’t save every dog. You know there will be heartbreak. You know some outcomes will feel like losses no matter how hard you tried. But if fear of heartbreak keeps you from stepping into the arena at all, then the dogs you could have helped never get that chance.
Maybe the goal was never to “win” rescue.
Maybe the goal is simply to keep showing up, keep doing some good while we’re here, and leave both people and animals a little better because we were part of their lives.

The color of a senior dog’s tongue is often overlooked in favor of more obvious signs of trouble like energy levels or appetite, but veterinarians emphasize its importance. From pale pink to dark blue-black, variations in the coloration of a senior dog's tongue can signify different health concerns ranging from dehydration and anemia to potential organ dysfunction.

By paying attention to this seemingly small detail, senior dog parents have the opportunity to catch potential problems early on and ensure their beloved frosty-muzzled furry companions receive timely care.

So, next time you look at your aging pup’s tongue, remember that its hue might reveal more than meets the eye.

Pro tip: While your old fur friend is panting naturally, take a picture of his or her tongue with your cell phone and save the photo as a reference. If your dog doesn't really pant, then gently lift the side of their lip to see the tongue and take a photo of it.
