The month of August has been focused on the initiative of Clear the Shelters. This week, HAWS focused again on our local partner at Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC), transferring in both 5 dogs and 5 cats (with more coming on Sunday).
Please see the below statement from the team working closely with both of our shelters as MADACC navigates an uptick in panleukopenia:
University of Wisconsin Program for Shelter Medicine and Community Engaged Care has been working with MADACC to support the health of animals in their care and to help ensure that transfers are approached thoughtfully, protecting both the animals being transferred and those already in the receiving shelter.
The cats selected for transfer are not showing signs of illness and were carefully evaluated before moving, including antibody titer testing to help assess their protection against panleukopenia.
While no animal transfer can be considered completely without risk, these cats were selected because the available information gives us confidence that they can be moved safely. Thoughtful transfers like this also create much-needed space and capacity at MADACC, allowing them to focus their resources on the animals within their care.
*This is the last weekend of HAWS $50 adoption special, and it's time to give all of the feline friends in our care some love! We look forward to continuing to transfer animals from MADACC and other partners in need of our help.
