Heading out for a hike with your four-legged adventure buddy? 🐾🌲

Here are a few safety tips to help keep the journey fun and safe:

🥾 Check the trail conditions first. Wet leaves, loose rocks, and uneven terrain can make slips more common especially for excited pups.

💧 Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Pets often won’t tell you they’re overheating until it’s serious. Offer breaks often, and don’t let them drink from standing water.

🌿 Know what plants to avoid. Foxtails, burrs, and certain mushrooms can cause trouble quickly. A quick post-hike “nose-to-tail” check can catch stickers, cuts, or ticks before they become an issue.

🦮 Keep them leashed and in sight. Wildlife, cyclists, and sudden drop-offs are more common than we think. A leash keeps everyone safe, pets included.

🔥 Watch for signs of fatigue. Lagging behind, heavy panting, or slowing down on the trail are early warnings your pet needs a break.

🧰 Pack a small first-aid kit. Even simple supplies like bandage material, tweezers, and antiseptic can help you manage a minor issue until you reach care.

If your pet comes home limping, vomiting, unusually tired, or acting “off” after a hike, it’s always safest to get them checked out. Enjoy your adventures and stay trail-smart! 🐶🍁

🐾 Say hello to Stacy Marszalkowski, our talented Radiologic Technologist in the Imaging Department at WVRC Waukesha!

Stacy has been a Rad Tech since 2003, with advanced training in X-ray, CT, and MRI. She joined the veterinary world over 6 years ago and has brought her extensive experience to help elevate the care we provide for our patients.

At WVRC, Stacy gets to use a variety of imaging tools that most general practices don’t have, including advanced X-ray, fluoroscopy, CT, and MRI. From evaluating fractures and joint issues to performing cardiac procedures and swallow studies, Stacy’s expertise helps our doctors make precise diagnoses and tailor the best treatment plans for every patient.

During National Radiologic Technologist Week, Stacy even shares her fun themed shirts while highlighting all the ways imaging helps pets feel their best. Whether it’s a routine X-ray or a complex CT scan, Stacy ensures every procedure is performed with skill and care.

If you guessed a tooth, you nailed it! ✔️

That’s right — this pet’s mysterious x-ray object turned out to be a lost tooth. While it might look alarming on an x-ray, this can happen during normal chewing, play, or as part of the natural process of losing baby teeth.

🦴 Fun fact:
Pets (especially energetic pups and curious cats) can sometimes swallow small objects without anyone noticing — even their own teeth! Most of the time, these pass without trouble, but it’s always a good idea to have anything unusual checked by a veterinary professional.

Great guesses, everyone! Stay tuned for the next Pet Puzzler! 🐾

🐾 Early Signs of Pain in Cats and Dogs 🐾

Our pets can’t tell us when something hurts but they often show us in subtle ways. Recognizing early signs of pain can make a big difference in getting them the care they need.

👀 Watch for these changes:
🐶 Dogs may:

-Limp or favor one side
-Pant excessively even at rest
-Avoid stairs or jumping
-Become irritable or withdrawn

🐱 Cats may:

-Hide more than usual
-Stop grooming or overgroom one spot
-Hesitate to jump onto furniture
-Eat or play less

If you notice any of these behaviors, trust your instincts, Your pet could be in discomfort. Pain can appear suddenly or build up slowly, especially with age or injury.

Early attention helps pets feel better, faster. ❤️

🎃👻 Happy Howl-o-ween! 👻🎃

As you celebrate tonight, keep your furry friends safe from any spooky surprises:
🦴 Keep candy out of reach — chocolate and xylitol (found in sugar-free treats) can be toxic to pets.
🕯️ Watch those decorations — curious paws and wagging tails can knock over candles or chew on cords.
🚪 Secure your doors — trick-or-treat traffic can make it easy for frightened pets to slip outside.

A little caution can keep the night full of treats, not tricks, for your four-legged family members. 🐾💛

🐾 Meet Pumpkin! 🧡

This adorable 3-month-old Golden Retriever mix came to WVRC Waukesha as a transfer for acute liver failure, likely caused by eating a mushroom or unknown toxin outside.

Pumpkin spent 9 days in the hospital, where our team carefully monitored her blood sugar, ammonia, and liver values through an advanced sampling catheter. She received IV fluids, GI support, and medications to help her liver recover — plus a nasogastric tube for nutrition until she was ready to eat on her own.

Thanks to her strength (and lots of TLC from our team), Pumpkin made an incredible recovery! She’s now back home, happy, healthy, and growing big and strong. 💪🐶
