Anubis spent the first 4-5 months of his life living on a breeder farm. When he was rescued by Fluffy Dog, it was clear to see the toll it had taken on him. He was fearful and clearly had not had any socialization - a very common issue with breeder farms and the sad reality of mill dogs. The volunteers worked hard to teach him that humans were kind, loving, and that he was safe. He was learning what it was like to walk on a leash and do normal dog things.
After many months in the shelter, Anubis got the chance to go into a foster home! This was a whole new world for him. He spent the first few days pacing and trying to make himself invisible. He wouldnāt let his foster family pet him, let alone be in the same room as him. Luckily, this foster home had two friendly dogs that really helped guide Anubis. He really loves all the dogs he meets!
Over the last several months, we are happy to report that Anubis has made slow, gradual progress! When you first meet Anubis, he will be fearful and keep his distance. He will most likely shake when you touch him. Even after all this time, we still need to coax him into a corner to pet him, put a leash on him, etc. However, he will now approach us for treats and will even come up to us to smell our hands! He gets very excited for food and absolutely loves jerky treats! He loves being outdoors. This is where you can see his personality shine the most - he loves to run around and play with the other dogs, he loves to roll around in the grass, and we will even catch him playing with sticks or toys we have outside.
He hasnāt had an accident in months and will do his business while heās outdoors. He does sometimes hesitate to come back indoors - it may be a combination of wanting to stay outside or being a little skittish if we are too close to the door.
Anubis sleeps quietly in a dog bed all night and really catches on to consistency and schedules. To help with his timidness, we try to keep things predictable, like our personal routines, feeding schedule, and everyday activities. He enjoys being āhomeā and a family who is a homebody would be best. We have taken him on trips to see out-of-town family, and he does okay with travel (every once in a while, he gets an upset stomach). He will often pace in new surroundings, so itās important to give him a space for himself and time to decompress.
His future family will benefit from having experience with mill dogs and understanding that he will require lots of patience, commitment, and empathy. Because of his love of outdoors and he still requires being coaxed into a corner to apply a harness, we believe a fenced-in yard is a must for this sweet boy. We would also recommend other dogs in the home to help guide Anubis. He would also do better with adults, but older kids who understand he needs a little extra space would also be okay. He is less fearful of females, but is learning to trust men.
Behind all the fear and rough start to his life, Anubis is a sweet boy who is just happy to have been given a second chance. We know thereās a loving, understanding family out there who will understand Anubisās needs and give him his forever home he deserves.
