Lucky enough to visit with Cats veteran 3rd baseman Dakota "Dodge" Smith this morning on the mindset on Opening Day: "Although every season is different my mind set and attitude stays consistent. Personally, opening day has always been kind of an emotional roller coaster. Thinking about the off season workouts, the time, the sacrifice that I've put in, that have lead up to today is what gets me going. Being looked at as one of the leaders of this team definitely leads to some pressure but I don't mind it. You know it's funny, watching some of the rookies come in and kind of press and be nervous because I was in their shoes at one point and it's hard for them to believe that. That's where I pull them aside and tell them to be themselves and let the game come to them. Don't get caught up in the championships and the buzz; it's just baseball. God willing, I've got some good years of ball left to add to my storied career. But the thing I stress the most on opening day is: don't take one pitch for granted. Leave everything you have on the field and good things will come."

112 days until your CALMAR CATS open up the season in Fort Atkinson on Memorial Day Weekend. The Cats are coming off one of their best seasons in recent history which ended in a trip to the state playoffs. The Cats were eliminated in the first weekend but last year was a huge step in the right direction for the future of town-team baseball in Calmar, Iowa. Manger Dan "Catfish" Hageman had a few comments on preparation for this upcoming year. "Wellllllllllllllll we got the boys a little taste of what its like to be a winner this past summer. I think they really liked it and I'm thinking they're gonna come hungry again this next summer. We got to state but I mean f**k, that was a guarantee back in the day. If theres one thing I can teach these pantsh*tters its how to win a ball game. It isn't gonna come easy though. I saw some of these boys down here in the Riverside this past month, a couple of these big bi***es gotta find a way to shed a little weight if they wanna see the line-up I'm afraid. Not a bad idea to throw the cats jersey through a wash and maybe play a game of a catch or two over the net couple of months. I know I've been the MVP of this f***in league the last 32 years but at some point I'd like to almost hang the cleats up and have a team that can win amongst themselves. Will this be the year you ask? To damn early to tell." Everyone sit tight. Calmar Cats baseball will be here before we know it folks.

A beautiful piece written by one of the best players to ever wear a Cat's uniform, Mark Huber. Mark was one of the most gifted players to ever play for Catfish. He played wherever you needed him and had a swing that was picture perfect. Huber had a habit of showing up 3 minutes before first pitch, but he'd still lead the game off by roping that pitch into a gap. Whenever you feel like playing again and showing the boys how its done, make your way back to Calmar and throw on the maroon and white. Don't worry, Catfish still has a cooler of warm beer waiting after each game.

CALMAR-- The Calmar Cats. It just rolls off the tongue doesn’t it? Meet the summer wooden bat baseball team enjoyed by all ages for decades, while being represented by multiple generations-- oftentimes in the same starting line-up! In one Sunday doubleheader...
