Luca is a 2 year old Poodle Mix who presented for vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and inappetence.

After performing diagnostics, Luca was hospitalized for treatment of AHDS (acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome) and pancreatitis. He received supportive care, including IV fluids, GI support, and pain management while being closely monitored.

Luca responded well to treatment and was able to be discharged with medications 2 days later. He continues to do well at home! ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ’ก AHDS, previously known as HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis), is characterized by bloody diarrhea and typically vomiting. There can be several possible contributing factors to AHDS, such as intestinal bacteria, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxins, or immune-mediated disease. AHDS can result in severe, life-threatening dehydration, so it is crucial to seek immediate veterinary care if your pet is experiencing symptoms.

Who doesnโ€™t love a good before and after?!

Sorry is a 2 year old mixed breed who was brought in after a run-in with a porcupine.

After Sorry was sedated, our team carefully removed all of the porcupine quills. We also checked her bloodwork to ensure her kidney and liver values were normal in order to prescribe an anti-inflammatory. Once Sorry was quill-free and awake from sedation, she felt much better and was discharged with medications. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ’กEach porcupine quill has numerous barbs, which can make them difficult and painful to remove. We always recommend sedation for quill removal, because not only is it more comfortable and less stressful for your pet, but it also allows our team to thoroughly assess for any embedded quills.

Has your pet ever had an encounter with a porcupine?

Bella is a 3 year old Shih Tzu who was rushed to our hospital after being hit by a car.

When Bella arrived, she was in shock and obtunded, showing severe signs of head trauma. Her right eye appeared larger than the left eye, both of her pupils were very small, and she was not responding to visual tests in either eye - suggesting severely decreased vision/blindness. Despite the severity of her condition, her bloodwork was relatively benign, her radiographs did not reveal any fractures, and there was no evidence of free fluid or effusion on her ultrasound.

Bella was hospitalized in our oxygen ICU for treatment of TBI (traumatic brain injury). Throughout her stay, our team closely monitored her mentation and vitals while providing IV fluids, pain management, eye medication, and medication to help reduce intracranial pressure.

While Bella still has a long road ahead of her, she is making encouraging progress. She is getting around better, eating and drinking, and although her vision is not fully back to normal, she has shown some improvement there as well!

Please send Bella some positive thoughts as she continues her recovery! ๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿพ

Post-op hydration hits different. Cone life can be tough, so Miniโ€™s parents provided her with some assisted drinking privileges after surgery.๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ˜ธ

Mini is 9 years old and was brought to our hospital when her recent abdominal incision opened.

Unfortunately, this was far more serious than a minor incision complication. When Mini arrived, tissue was actually protruding from her surgical site! Mini was taken to surgery where our veterinarian removed a large amount of necrotic tissue, thoroughly flushed her abdomen with sterile saline, and repaired her incision. She remained hospitalized for continued monitoring, IV fluids, antibiotics, pain management, and supportive care.

Mini did great, was discharged with medications the next day, and is doing well at home! ๐Ÿค

Jax said โ€œwhat nerf ball?โ€ ๐Ÿ‘€

Jax is a 10 year old Mastiff Mix who presented for vomiting, diarrhea, and inappetence.

We performed a GI workup, which included bloodwork and radiographs. While his bloodwork showed some mild changes, his radiographs revealed the problem - a circular object in his small intestine. Jax was hospitalized for IV fluids, GI support, pain management, and surgery.

During surgery, our veterinarian was able to locate the foreign body in the intestines and remove it - a nerf ball! Jax remained hospitalized afterwards for continued monitoring and supportive care.

Jax is home now and feeling much better! ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿพ

Who remembers the 22 pound emaciated Pitbull found abandoned in the trash in Scranton last August? Check the comments for her before photos!

Look at her now! ๐Ÿ˜

Finley (previously Maggie) recently visited us after getting her front paw caught between flooring material, causing one of her nails to break.

After Finley was sedated, our team performed radiographs of her paw to ensure there were no fractures or additional injuries. Thankfully, no broken bones or abnormalities were found. Then, we trimmed the fractured nail and bandaged her paw to help protect the area and keep her comfortable. Once Finley recovered from sedation, she was discharged with an anti-inflammatory.

Finley is doing wonderfully and ready to get back to full speed! We were so happy to see Finley continuing to thrive after having such a heartbreaking beginning! ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿพ

๐ŸšจPSA - STAY VIGILANT! ๐Ÿšจ

Recently, we have seen a significant increase in dog attack cases - occurring every single night and mostly happening while on walks! Let this post be a reminder to please watch your pets while they are outside to ensure they donโ€™t run off, injure other animals, or arenโ€™t injured in their own yard. While walking your pet - please be very vigilant of your surroundings! Even familiar neighborhoods can present unexpected risks.

Luna is a 10 year old Bichon Frise who was brought in after she was attacked by another dog while on a walk.

Luna sustained significant injuries - several puncture wounds, multiple lacerations, and a large abdominal hernia. Stabilization for Luna included repairing her wounds, administering IV fluids, starting antibiotics, and managing her pain. Once stabilized, Luna was transferred to another hospital for continued care and monitoring.

We are happy to share that Luna is now back home with her family and resting comfortably as she continues her recovery! ๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ“ข Share this post to help spread awareness, serve as a reminder, and keep pets safe in our communities! โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

Bean is a 9 year old Lab Mix who presented for increased thirst, increased urination, and vaginal discharge.

Given Beanโ€™s symptoms and being an intact female, there was concern for pyometra (infection of the uterus). Our team performed bloodwork, radiographs, and an ultrasound, which confirmed our suspicion. Bean was hospitalized for surgery, IV fluids, pain management, GI medications, and an antibiotic.

Beanโ€™s surgery went well! She remained hospitalized afterwards for continued monitoring and treatment. She was able to be discharged with medications the next day, and has been doing wonderful at home! ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿพ

Pyometra is a potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus that causes it to become inflamed and distended with bacteria and pus. It can develop in any unspayed female, and can be fatal without immediate surgical intervention. Pyometra can be prevented by having your pet spayed.

At Animal Emergency Center, we see pyometra cases quite often. These cases are a reminder of why we advocate so strongly for spaying. Please donโ€™t wait - talk with your veterinarian about spaying your pets! โค๏ธ

Have you ever heard of pyometra? Tell us in the comments!

Boomer is a 2 year old English Springer Spaniel who was brought in after being hit by a car.

On arrival, Boomerโ€™s vitals were normal and his physical exam was fairly unremarkable. Despite appearing normal on the outside, we always recommend diagnostics to evaluate for internal injuries or abnormalities.

While Boomerโ€™s bloodwork and radiographs had some mild changes, he was able to be discharged with pain medication and continued monitoring at home.

Boomer has been doing very well! ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿพ

Also, a special thank you to Boomerโ€™s mom for keeping our team fueled with some Dominos! It was greatly appreciated! โ˜บ๏ธ

Lavelle is a 3 year old Doberman who presented for vomiting numerous times.

Lavelleโ€™s bloodwork showed a significantly elevated hematocrit (the percentage of red blood cells in the blood), indicating dehydration. She was hospitalized to treat her vomiting and dehydration with IV fluids, GI support, and pain management.

After starting treatment, Lavelle was feeling much better and no longer vomiting. She is back to herself and doing great at home! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿพ
