Farm Sanctuary

Farm Sanctuary Rescue, education, and advocacy for farm animals.
🐄🐖🐐🐑🐓🦃 Farm Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization and the first farm animal rescue in the United States.

Since 1986, we’ve been dedicated to changing the world for farm animals. Here, we know them as sentient beings worthy of compassion and care, not just commodities. Through collaborative efforts, we can create lasting change and pave the way for a brighter future for farm animals everywhere.

When we first met Connie, she had been fighting for her life in subzero temperatures and living without adequate water, food, or shelter with her baby, Ash.

Sheep like Connie are loving and gentle beings, yet often subjected to some of the cruelest treatment in animal agriculture. We're so grateful we were able to rescue Connie and Ash and keep them safe from an industry where they're seen just as products for profit.

At Farm Sanctuary, they both live the life all farm animals deserve—and Connie loves to spend her days being hugged. ❤️

The reality of our world is that billions of farm animals will never have the chance to experience a peaceful, loving life like Connie. Thankfully, we can change that when we choose compassion, support rescues, and are mindful of what goes on our plates.

It’s never been easier to make a difference! Your choices matter. 💚

On May 30, 1988, 600 animal advocates stood together at the Lancaster Stockyards to demand change.

Not only did we protest the atrocities, but we secured a groundbreaking agreement: legal authority to rescue sick, injured, and unwanted animals from the facility—a first for an animal protection agency—and an early victory in our No Downers campaign, which we launched in 1986. Our No Downers Campaign worked to prevent the inhumane transport and slaughter of downed animals unable to move due to sickness or injury through investigations and public protests.

That historic day in Lancaster shaped the future of animal advocacy. Today, our continued rescue, education, and advocacy work honors our early roots as we fight animal cruelty and help shift public perception of farm animals.

This week, we're highlighting the bond between Alice, Manager of Tour Programs, and our sweet Jenny. 💚

"Six years ago, someone abandoned a piglet in a cat carrier on the roadside. Now 6 glorious years old, Jenny lives her days out alongside her soulmate, Bitsy the pig, and their amazing group of friends. I am honored to be her friend, too. Jenny is remarkably bright and unapologetically herself. We've developed our loving bond over time with lots of belly rubs, but it really took off when we started our training relationship.

When people hear "clicker training," they often think of dogs, but farmed animals can also participate in and benefit from it. Thankfully, my coworkers are experts on the matter. They taught me that species-specific enrichment is a crucial piece of sanctuary animal welfare -- and Jenny has deepened my understanding of that truth.

When presented with the black side of a paddle, Jenny puts her nose up to it, knowing she'll get a tasty treat (usually frozen berries or pumpkin cubes). Funnily enough, I planned to offer this enrichment to Bitsy at first, but Jenny made it very clear she wanted to volunteer when I started coming by for sessions. (Don't worry, the lovely Bitsy participates, too, and always gets treats regardless.)

Jenny is vibrant, active, spunky, sweet, and often hilarious! I feel blessed to have the opportunity to spend so much time with her, and I wish everyone could witness not only her and other farmed animals' intelligence, but infinitely more importantly, their capacity for emotions.

As a tour guide, I am overjoyed when I see my guests learning about—and automatically loving—Jenny and her friends just as much as I do. If you haven't visited our rescues in Acton or Watkins Glen yet, this is your sign to book a tour. Come see for yourself!"

Looking for reasons to go vegan? We’ve got 5... and they all live here at sanctuary!

Each one of our rescue animals has a name, a story, and a personality of their own. Choosing compassion means choosing them, and by going vegan, you give them what they deserve: freedom, safety, and love. 💚

Who wouldn't want a duck by their side to call their friend!?

This week, meet Tori and Pip and learn about their beautiful bond. Pip is loved by all who meet him, and we're s grateful to have given such a bold personality a home with us. 💚

"I am so grateful for the opportunity to work for such a wonderful organization and form incredible connections with so many wonderful animals. Farmed animals suffer so much from the animal agriculture industry, but the work we do here at Farm Sanctuary is making a difference in the lives of so many. Instead of living in fear and pain, they can be at peace and enjoy their freedom. Spending their days in the sun with their friends, safe and in sanctuary. All animals just want to live.

Caring for Pip and the other residents here has been the most meaningful and rewarding experience of my life. I found sanctuary here, too, and I couldn’t be more thankful."

Which myth do you think people fall for the most? ⬇️

Bellamy was found in a ditch, covered in wounds, unsure if she’d ever feel safe again. When she first arrived at Farm Sanctuary, she was shy and nervous…but everything changed when she met her herd.

It’s safe to say everything changed when she joined the herd and found herself a family. 💚
