This week, we're highlighting the bond between Alice, Manager of Tour Programs, and our sweet Jenny. 💚
"Six years ago, someone abandoned a piglet in a cat carrier on the roadside. Now 6 glorious years old, Jenny lives her days out alongside her soulmate, Bitsy the pig, and their amazing group of friends. I am honored to be her friend, too. Jenny is remarkably bright and unapologetically herself. We've developed our loving bond over time with lots of belly rubs, but it really took off when we started our training relationship.
When people hear "clicker training," they often think of dogs, but farmed animals can also participate in and benefit from it. Thankfully, my coworkers are experts on the matter. They taught me that species-specific enrichment is a crucial piece of sanctuary animal welfare -- and Jenny has deepened my understanding of that truth.
When presented with the black side of a paddle, Jenny puts her nose up to it, knowing she'll get a tasty treat (usually frozen berries or pumpkin cubes). Funnily enough, I planned to offer this enrichment to Bitsy at first, but Jenny made it very clear she wanted to volunteer when I started coming by for sessions. (Don't worry, the lovely Bitsy participates, too, and always gets treats regardless.)
Jenny is vibrant, active, spunky, sweet, and often hilarious! I feel blessed to have the opportunity to spend so much time with her, and I wish everyone could witness not only her and other farmed animals' intelligence, but infinitely more importantly, their capacity for emotions.
As a tour guide, I am overjoyed when I see my guests learning about—and automatically loving—Jenny and her friends just as much as I do. If you haven't visited our rescues in Acton or Watkins Glen yet, this is your sign to book a tour. Come see for yourself!"
