A reminder for all dog owners about keeping dogs cool in hot weather ☀️
Heatstroke is a life threatening condition that can develop if an animalbecomes too hot. This can cause seizures, organ damage, internal bleeding, coma and even death.
Dogs are particularly at risk of developing heat stroke on warm days when they are outside exercising and playing. It can also be caused by being in a warm room without proper ventilation, being kept somewhere hot such as a car, conservatory or kennel. Any dog can develop heatstroke, but flat-faced, overweight, giant-breed, thick-coated, very old and very young dogs are most at risk.
Some Tips for helping dogs stay cool in warm weather:
1. Only walk when it is cool, early morning and evening. Do NOT walk any dog during the hottest hours of the days (12pm-4pm).
2. Light exercise only. When playing with your dog allow lots of time for breaks in shade, provide water, and allow your dog to cool down.
3. Provide lots of shade and plenty of water. Can also freeze water, kong toys, make “ice pops”.
4. No unnecessary travel. NEVER leave dogs in cars.
5. Be extra cautious with flat- faced, overweight, giant-breed, thick-coated, very young and very old dogs. These dogs are less tolerant of the heat than other dogs.

Heatstroke in dogs is a medical emergency that requires immediate veterinary attention. But what are the common causes, symptoms, and treatment? Our vet experts explain everything you need to know about dog heatstroke—and how to keep your pet safe.

When the temperature rises during the onset of summer, it serves as a good time to review a few heat safety recommendations to keep your feline friends safe and comfortable.

The following are some guidelines for addressing this important issue. As always, your veterinarian is your best source of guidance if you have any questions or concerns about these recommendations or the well-being of your cat.

• Help to maintain hydration by assuring that fresh water is available at all times. Providing a running water source like a fountain may encourage some cats to drink more. Make sure that water is always available both indoors and outdoors for those cats that are allowed outside.
• Provide shaded areas for cats that are allowed outside. These may take the form of tress, umbrellas, sun sails, and/or indoor places to which a cat has access.
• Provide ice cubes for your cat to play with and cool down while doing so.
• Use cooling mats (available for purchase online and through other outlets). You can also make a cool space for cats to hang out in by wrapping ice packs in blankets.
• Keep cats indoors (if possible) in air-conditioned areas when extreme heat is forecast.
• Check sheds, garages, greenhouses, barns, and other outbuildings to make sure there are no places in which cats can become trapped.
• Use pet-safe sunscreen on the ear tips and nose of cats with light colored fur to help prevent skin cancer.

Know the signs of heat stroke, which can become life-threatening very quickly. These include:
• Weakness/collapse
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea

If you notice any of these, immediately place your cat in a cool area with a draft, gently wet her fur with cool (not very cold) water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Taking these easy steps and knowing what to watch out for can help assure that your cat is comfortable and safe during times of extreme heat.

Nelson, the gentle giant with a heart as big as his paws, was in for his annual exam and vaccines. Visitors and staff alike were smitten by this friendly Newfoundland’s impressive stature and calm demeanor.
Alicia, one of the veterinary assistants, couldn’t resist the opportunity to capture a quick picture with Nelson. As an employee who loves dogs, she found Nelson especially endearing.
Despite his size, Nelson was known for his calm demeanor and friendly nature. He greeted the staff with a wag of his tail, a gesture that was both welcoming and reassuring.

This morning began like any other, with our dedicated technicians preparing for their day of service. However, unbeknownst to each other, two of our team members, Sierra and Taylor, had a surprise in store for everyone. As they arrived at work, it became immediately clear that they had both chosen the same scrub shop for their uniforms. Not only did they shop at the same place, but they also selected identical scrubs!
Great minds think and shop alike!
