Balance is one of the most important things when bringing a second dog into your home.

Your first dog didnā€™t ask for a new puppy, and your new dog shouldnā€™t have to fit perfectly into the life your first dog already has. Your job is to create a healthy balance where both dogs still get to be individuals.

Why does that matter?

Individual attention: Your first dog still needs one-on-one time with you, and your puppy needs to learn how to function without constantly relying on the other dog.

Avoiding over-dependence: Itā€™s easy for two dogs to become attached to each other to the point where they struggle when separated. Teaching independence from the beginning helps prevent this.

Maintaining your first dogā€™s routine: Walks, training, playtime, rest and boundaries shouldnā€™t disappear just because thereā€™s a puppy in the house.

Teaching the puppy how to exist around the older dog: Your puppy needs to learn that the older dog isnā€™t their personal entertainment 24/7. Sometimes the answer is ā€œgo settle,ā€ ā€œleave them alone,ā€ or simply having separate time.

Preventing resentment: Giving your first dog space and continuing their normal routines can help make the transition much smoother.

And remember: you donā€™t have to do everything together.

Separate walks. Separate training. Individual play. Individual rest. One-on-one time with you.

Then, of course, plenty of opportunities for them to learn how to coexist and enjoy each other appropriately.

Bringing home a second dog isnā€™t just about adding another dog to the family. Itā€™s about creating a new dynamicā€”and teaching everyone how to thrive in it.

Matilda is a 4-year-old pit mix whoā€™s been struggling with barrier frustration and leash frustration around other dogs. While she has dog friends she enjoys playing with in her own yard and can walk alongside familiar dogs, seeing unfamiliar dogs behind fences or while on leash has become overwhelming.

Today I met Matilda and her wonderful parents to help get them back on the right track after they were feeling a little lost. We got right to work with one-on-one coaching, focusing on proper timing, marker words, rewards, and how to apply leash pressure clearly and fairly. We also set up real-life training scenarios using Nova and Bowie so her parents could practice exactly what to do when Iā€™m not there to guide them.

Training isnā€™t just about changing a dogā€™s behaviorā€”itā€™s about giving owners the knowledge and confidence to communicate clearly with their dog. With consistency, patience, and the right guidance, we can help shift Matildaā€™s mindset so walks become less stressful and more enjoyable for everyone.
