It's common for dogs to seem to forget commands when a squirrel darts by or another dog appears. This isn't naughtiness; it's their natural instincts taking precedence. Start by mastering basic commands in calm, quiet settings to build a strong communication foundation before tackling the outside world.

The front door isn't just an entry point for us; for our dogs, it's a significant boundary that can trigger powerful instincts. This threshold marks the division between their safe territory and the stimulating world beyond. Understanding that your dog's excitement or territorial barks stem from these deep-seated instincts – like protection and exploration – is the first step towards helping them navigate this moment with calm confidence. Approaching these reactions with empathy and a strategic plan can transform chaotic greetings into composed welcomes.

Planning a summer trail adventure with your dog? Before you head out, remember a crucial safety check: always place your bare hand on the ground for five seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's definitely too hot for your dog's sensitive paw pads. Opt for cooler parts of the day, like early mornings or late evenings, and choose routes with plenty of shade and natural surfaces to protect their paws from painful burns and blistering.

It's natural for people to want to greet your dog, but not every dog enjoys every interaction. Just like humans, dogs have varying comfort levels. It's vital to recognize their silent signals. Look for cues like a tucked tail, an averted gaze, lip licking, or stiff body language. These are your dog's way of telling you they might be feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Respecting these boundaries prevents discomfort from escalating and strengthens your bond by showing your dog you're their advocate.

While enjoying summer trails with your dog, active vigilance is key to their paw health. Keep a close eye on your companion for any signs of discomfort, such as limping, excessive paw licking, or showing reluctance to continue walking. These can be indicators that the surface is too hot or causing irritation. Prioritize taking frequent breaks in shaded areas and carry water for hydration and to cool their paws. After your adventure, always inspect their paw pads for any redness, cuts, or blisters.

Transforming chaotic greetings at the front door into calm passages is achievable with consistent training. A highly effective strategy is to teach your dog a "stay" or "place" command, positioning them away from the immediate entryway. Practice having them hold this position even when the doorbell rings or someone knocks. Generously reward them for maintaining their calm and staying in place. This structured approach helps your dog understand what's expected of them in these high-stimulus situations, leading to a more poised entrance and exit for everyone.

A wonderful end to an otherwise very eventful and busy week.

This photo op on Castle Island with Stella is a picture that says 1000 words.

The calm after the storm. The silver lining to a hard day. My constant no matter what.

Thats what dogs do for us. They give us something that keeps us consistent and accountable. Something to look forward to when we get home from a long day. A companion who forces us to grow.

This girl started this journey for me 8 years ago.

I didn't know it yet, but she changed my life forever and for the best.

So grateful for Stella and for everyone who has trust us as a company to take care of your "stellas"

Heading out to explore the stunning New England trails? Human preparedness is just as vital as canine readiness. A top tip for navigating the region's diverse weather is to dress in layers. New England's climate can be unpredictable, often changing within a single day. Opt for moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer shell to adapt to any conditions. Sturdy hiking boots and a comfortable backpack for essentials like water and snacks complete your gear.
