Watching this can you imagine this was Peach’s first public outing session in Lowes? And can you imagine Peach is 9 years old?! She did sooo amazing and is so ready for her CGC test coming up! She was so focused and walked so nicely, so proud of all their work!
When people say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, Peach begs to differ! No age is too old to start learning new things, improving their obedience/manners, or building upon your relationship!

Cheyenne and Aspen had their 5th session with us the other day and man are they making great progress!! We have been working on their loose leash walking skills independently and just starting putting their other skills like down and leave-it generalized when they are together! You wouldn’t believe that Cheyenne used to be insanely unfocused and overstimulated outside, whining, and constantly pulling every direction! Now look at them both!
They have also master door manners and gotten so much better with their recall outside! I am so proud of them and their owner, I cannot wait to continue to watch their improvement!
Interested private lessons? Reach out today! We have lessons all throughout the week and weekend!
6 month old Duhblinn passed his Canine Good Citizen test with flying colors last week!!! Check out just how awesome he is doing in each and every one of the test items!!
The CGC is a phenomenal curriculum to goal towards for basic obedience and general manners! It tests the dog through 10 items, including accepting a friendly stranger, sitting nicely for petting, allowing to be touched and groomed, going for a loose leash walk around people and distractions, sit and down with stay, recall, reaction to another dog, and supervised separation!
Interested in private lessons or more information on the CGC? Reach out today! There will also be an intermediate class next session for the CGC!
Phoebe finished her 3-week board and train last week and I cannot be more proud of this change in her! The biggest goals her owners wanted was basic house manners, potty training, appropriate greeting of new people (no jumping), and walking on a leash! Well she mastered that in no time! Then we got to work on some other basic obedience including down with implied stay, leave-it, and recall! I did not get any videos of all her outings but she was able to go to Lowes, group class, the park, and so much more! I cannot wait to help her owners continue her training at home, she is such a sweetheart and loves to work!
Interested in our Board and Train program? We have openings for October!
A little late, but check out how awesome these dogs and their owners did last week in our 2nd week of group classes!!
In the basic class we worked on leave-it, sit with implied stay, and door manners! In the intermediate class I tested all of the dogs to help them get ready for their CGC or CGCA assessments and they also rocked everything I threw at them. We worked on their walking over food, down and recalls, reaction to other dogs, and long duration down stays! So proud of each and every one. I cannot wait to continue to watch their improvements!
Our next group classes will start September 19th and 20th! Reach out today to sign up!
Lucy had her first session at Lowes the other day to work towards her Canine Good Citizen test soon! She did so well and I am so proud of all the improvement she has made! She also had some leash reactivity due to some frustration towards and rarely does she even make a peep when she sees another dog!
With just a little more practice, I know she is going to ace the CGC.
Interested in private lessons? We have a few more spots during the week, reach out today to reserve your slot!
This is absolutely one of my favorite transformations!! When I met this sweet little girl a couple months ago, she was so terrified of new people she would bark nonstop and barely even take treats from me. It took a few weeks for her to accept me and then even longer for us to work up her threshold around strangers. She used to get out of the car in a parking lot and bark and lunge at anyone within eyesight. Once we worked through her threshold outside around strangers, we started taking it in the store. The first day in the store, she shut down and was very nervous.
NOW LOOK AT HER!! She is happy, confident, and walking by people no problem. I am insanely proud of her and how far she has come. We still have a lot of progress to make to fully build her confidence around new environments and fully mitigate her fear reactivity around strangers and dogs but I just had to share the progress so far!
Fear reactivity is very tough because you are dealing with an emotional problem. You cannot create lasting behavioral change without changing the mindset of the dog.

I think one of the most important skills in dog training, walking nicely, appropriately, and calmly on a leash! This makes outings enjoyable for both you and the dog!
Check these awesome dogs out learning their leash manners and loving their walks!
Interested in private lessons? Reach out today, there are limited open spots during the week!
Last week we had the first of our obedience classes and everyone did fantastic!!! We worked a ton on engagement, name recognition, impulse control, and leash manners! Each dog and owner made so much improvement and I cannot wait to see how they continue in the next 5 weeks!!
Interested in our group classes? The next class will start September 19th and 20th with limited spots. Reach out today before they fill up!
A little behind on Pheobe’s second week update video but check this girl out! This week was all about the foundations of basic obedience! (Excuse the poor camera angle and video😬). We worked on luring, impulse control, down with implied stay, leave-it, and loose leash walking in many different environments. She has gotten out on many outings including Lowes, the park, and group class!
I cannot wait for her to get to show off to her parents in a week!

A huge congratulations goes to Raiden for acing his CGC test the other night!! I am so proud of him and his owner! He is such a smart and well-rounded dog!
The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test is an evaluation by AKC that assesses the basic manners and obedience every dog should know including walking nicely on a leash through crowds, accepting friendly strangers, reaction to other dogs, sit, down, stay, recall, sitting nicely for petting, and reaction to distractions! This is my goal for each and every client whose goals are to have basic obedience and manners in public and around distractions!
Raiden did such a great job! Next up, CGC Advanced!
Interested in the CGC test or how to get there? Reach out today!
My favorite thing is to see all the pieces coming together! Check out Raiden’s first public outing the other day!! We have been working on his manners around the neighborhood and inside the home for the past few weeks. This week we began generalizing them to other locations and he picked it up like a champ! We worked on his engagement and manners around another dog, loose leash walking with distraction, and down with implied stay! Love to see clients and their dogs working together as a team and succeeding in their goals!
Interested in private lessons? Reach out today! I have a couple openings for during the weekday!
Let’s talk about building confidence and the importance behind it! Confidence is crucial in helping your dog take the stresses that life throws at them in stride. Though the dog may startle at first at new sights, sounds, or environments, a confident dog will recover quickly which is so important for a well-rounded dog!
Confidence building comes in all shapes and forms from learning new behaviors and commands to desensitization of new surfaces, objects, environments, and sounds! Bailey and Lucy both are a bit shy and so one goal we have had was build their confidence around novel things! Check out them rock this simple obstacle course with all types of new items! So proud of them!
Next we will try going into a store with lots of new experiences!

Check out Honey’s 4th public outing lesson the other day!! She did fantastic at such a young age! This lesson we worked mainly on loose leash walking, engagement, extended down stays, place, and beginning to enforce people talking to her as a cue to look at mom! This is super important for SDITs because no matter if someone is talking to them, reaching out to them, calling their name, they need to stay focused on their job and their person! It is such a hard task but one that if practiced, can be flawless!
I am so proud of her and her mom for all their hard work and can’t wait to continue to watch them grow!
Interested in private lessons? Reach out today! I am currently all booked but am accepting names on a waitlist!
5 days late is better than nothing? Finally here is Shadow’s final progress video at the end of his Board and Train with us! Check out all that he learned with us, including down with implied stay, leave-it, heel position, place, door manners, recall, and leash manners! He also got to practice all these behaviors in a multitude of distracting environments and excelled each one! So proud of him and can’t wait to continue working with him at home in private lessons to make sure he is generalizing and adapting well back home!
Interested in the Board & Train program? Reach our today, spots fill fast and I am booking into September!!
Way behind on posting lately but check out last weekend here at Groot’s Canine! It was fun-filled and full of socialization in new environments! We went to Seaway Splash in Clayton to compete with BKL Air Dogs and give both Shadow and Duhblinn a ton of socialization and training in a very high distraction environment! Both the puppies did an awesome job, I am beyond proud of their confidence and engagement with all the people and new sights and smells! I am also so impressed with how they handled everything i threw at them this weekend. Events like this are perfect training opportunities! Always something new for our board and train pups!
Groot and Lola also did great in the competition and ended up placing in each of their divisions! Shadow got to jump off this new dock in practice and Duhblinn even got to swim!
It’s summer time with just gorgeous weather! The best time to be taking your pup(s) for a walk! But is your walk enjoyable?
Check out these awesome pups rocking their heel and loose leash walking outside around distractions and other dogs! Each one of these dogs were previously reactive on leash (excitement reactivity) and was just all about going up and saying hi. However, all it took was a change of tools and reinforcement and look where they are at now!! So very proud of each dog and owner! Look at even the two doodles rocking it together, which takes a long time.
Interested in learning how or private lessons? I am currently booked but reach out today to be placed on my waitlist!
Shadow has completed 2 weeks with us in the Board and Train Program and look at all he has worked on! Week 2 is always the most intensive with actually learning new things. This week we focused on learning and proofing place around the house, recall and proofing it in high distraction environments, and learning leave-it, door manners, and the heel position! The last week will be all about making everything he has learned solid to get ready to go home!!
So excited to see how he does at home!

Let’s talk Recal!!! Recall is probably the most important behavior you can teach your dog. It is a behavior that truly could save your dog’s life! However, it can be one of the hardest. Recall has to be taught, practiced, and heavily reinforced! It also has to be taught as a requirement, that there is absolutely no other choice but to come back when recalled. To do this, while teaching this behavior, it is imperative to keep them on leash and ALWAYS have rewards. We have to have them on a leash to instill pressure if they decide to ignore or to guide them back if they don’t know what you are asking. Rewards are important to make coming back to you a positive experience and to create that reinforcement background!
Check out these clients working on their recall doing an amazing job! Recall takes time but with consistency and practice you can earn a rock solid recall even around distractions!
Shadow has finished his 1st week in his Board and Train program and is doing amazing!!! The first week is all about getting to know each other and building a bond. Once some trust has been built, we got started with socialization, engagement and confidence building! Shadow came with very little confidence in himself but has really come out of his shell in just one week! After some confidence building we got to start on the basics a couple days ago, such as recall, down, impulse control, and leash walking!
I cannot wait to see how he continues to progres in 2 more weeks!
Interested in the Board and Train Program? Reach out today! I am booking for August!
Visible progress is the best thing to see!! Emma has been going through a pretty intense fear period, causing her to be scared and react and many different things, especially strangers, other dogs, and loud noises! The other day she conquered Lowes on a very busy and noisy day! She did fantastic! She got a little uneasy at some of the loud noises but was able to maintain focus, behaviors, and not react to a single thing the entire time! What awesome progress, I am so proud of her and her family, I cannot wait to see how she continues to improve.

Check our newest Board and Train!!! Shadow has been with us for 5 days and and for most of the week we have been working on his confidence, independence, and engagement! Even though he is with me to get intensive training, why can’t we do all the fun things?
This week I took him out to try his hand at dock diving twice with BKL Air Dogs and work on his confidence and engagement around new environments, water, new dogs, and new smells. He was a rockstar! He was very nervous and unsure at first but opened up quickly and yesterday he got in the water, swam, and began jumping to retrieve!
Thank you so much to BKL for letting us come out and have fun!
Check out this gorgeous and smart poodle, Duhblinn! He has had 3 sessions with me so far and is doing amazing! We have started to work on down with implied stay, place, and recall! Our last session we also introduced door manners and a retrieve!!
I love working with him, he is so eager to learn and the chillest puppy I have met! I am excited to see where he goes with his owners!

Remy completed his 8-day Boarding Boot Camp with us the other day and check him out!! Remy has done a lot of private lessons with us and his owners have worked with him a lot. He has a super solid foundation in manners and obedience. So, this boot camp was all about e-collar conditioning to really proof and solidify everything he knows! He did fantastic! In this week we introduced the e-collar and taught him how to turn off the “pressure” and paired it with place, down, come, and his implied leave-it around plates. He excelled by no surprise!!
Going out of town this summer? Interested in a Boarding Boot Camp? Reach out today! We are completely booked for June and almost completely booked for July!
Honey had her first public outing session and look at all this engagement and focus! She is such a rockstar already! It is very, very important to socialize puppies at a young age safely and appropriately. Right from the beginning you want to show them the world while also building trust/engagement, structure, and manners! it’s important to recognize socialization is way more than just letting your puppy meet everyone and get all the pets. It’s actually much better to build their engagement with you while they can look, smell, and feel all that is new to them and not have a single pet from a stranger! You want to be the most exciting person in the room and everyone else boring as can be. This is hard if they are being pet by every new person walking by. The best way to build a well-socialized and behaved pet in public is making it about you and your dog, taking it slow, and heavily rewarding them for engaging you and seeing/smelling something new!

Check out this video right here, I just had to show this dog off! It may not seem like a lot but if only I had a comparison because the difference is huge! When I first met Aspen, she was riddled with anxiety about many things, especially new people and anything that moved outside. She was always on high alert, barking and lunging with zero engagement to her owner. After just a few lessons, appropriate socialization and exposure, and management techniques, she can more calmly walk on a leash around wildlife, new people, and dogs! She still has a long way to go to get where her owners want her to be but now her owners have the tools to continue to work with her!! I am so proud of Aspen and her owner!! Way to go!
Interested in private lessons? I am booking a few weeks out so reach out to get started!
Sam, the shepsky, is excelling with her basic obedience!! Look at her go these first 2 sessions with us! Our next step is already hitting the community to work on confidence building and her anxiety around new sights and sounds since she is doing so well within her home and mine!

Check out what Moco did this week!! He earned his Canine Good Citizen Certification!!! He did fantastic and aced it, by no surprise! This AKC certification tests a dogs manners in the community and is the perfect framework for training a dog to be a polite and well-rounded dog in society!
There are 10 test items that range from walking loosely on a leash, reaction to distractions and other dogs, basic behaviors, and separation! It is a great curriculum to work towards and test your skills out in the community.
This is my goal for all my clients who wish to participate because I do think it breaks down the basics of what your dog should know and how they should behave out in public!
Interested in training or working towards your own CGC Certification? Reach out today! I have a few more slots open during the week!
This doodle pair is looking amazing in just 3 ! Last week we were able to begin working on place together, their individual heel work, door manners, and a boundary command for the kitchen! They are such fun pups to work with and so smart!! I love the work their owners are doing with them and their progress!! I can’t wait to see how much improvement they continue to make!
Interested in private lessons? Reach out for an evaluation! I am almost completely booked but have a few spots open during the week!
Check out last week sessions with Moco and Kota!! These rockstars were placed in new environments this week and acted like they knew what they had been there a thousand times. Both owner’s hard work is paying off!
New pet-friendly environments are great to test your dogs ability to generalize commands. However, it is imperative to only introduce new environments for proofing and generalizing once the commands are SOLID in a low distracting environments and engagement is built heavily! This sets you and your dog up for success as you continue to build!
