This last round of classes had SOOO many graduates! Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of everyone since this last week has been filled with absences for sickness and weather but here are some of the amazing graduates!
Everyone has improved so much and I am so proud of them! We also had a ton of dogs complete and pass their CGC tests this round which was awesome!

Looking forward to our next round of classes! They begin Jan 15th! We have a few spots left!

Hooligan working on settling in public! Sometimes we forget to work on this simple behavior with puppies but it is SOOO important. It’s great to be able to take your puppy out in public but if you can’t sit down and chat with a friend, enjoy a coffee, or watch something it is very limiting!

Hooligan is with us to work on his fear with noises in public and he is doing sooooooooo well. He doesn’t usually settle well because he is concerned about every noise but today he rocked it!

Long video but definitely worth it!! Here is a few snippets from a typical day with outings for the Board and Train pups! We don’t do outings everyday but usually 3-4 times a week! Each one got 30 minutes in a store working on their individual goals. Max is working on her engagement, focus, and impulse control around people and distractions. Peach is working on confidence in new environments, down, loose leash walking, and engagement. Hooligan is working through his fear period with some confidence building and introductions to new environments.
Max and Peach also got to go to the park for a bit to run out some extra energy and get some good sniffs in. Not featured, Hooligan got some good play time with a flirt pole and toys, we are working on building his drive up for toys! They all did so well and i can’t wait to see the continued improvement they make!
Not everyday looks like this but many do, it is important to me that the dogs in our program get plenty of outings, interactions with people, socialization, play time, and exercise. Some days it looks a bit different with classes, inhome training, walks around the neighborhood, or games inside! They also all get to be out anytime I am home with my pack to work on house manners and settling within the home.

Interested in our Board & Train program? Reach out today! We have openings in Feb and March!

Welcome Max and Hooligan!!! They are both 6 months old but so very different! Max is here for a 3 week Board & Train for work on basic obedience, impulse control, engagement, and confidence in public! Hooligan is doing a BootCamp to work on his confidence through his fear period and build up some drive for obedience! He is a sport and confirmation prospect puppy for his owners! I am so happy to work with both of them!

The 5th week is coming to a close for our classes! Our Advanced Community Class went to TJ Maxx and Joanns on Sunday and our Intermediate Class went to Runnings! Every dog has improved so much in every class! Unfortunately I don’t have good photos of the basic and puppy classes but they have also rocked it! A video of their improvement is coming soon!

Our intermediate class went to Lowe’s tonight and ROCKED it!!! This was the first time they have been out as a group and I was so proud of each and every one of them!
We did a lot of walking through the store with the different people and distractions. We worked on their down stays around each other, sitting nicely for petting, walking over uneven and moving surfaces, and settling in a group!
Great work!! 🐾

Interested in our group classes? Stay tuned, our next round of classes will start the first of the year! The schedule will be posted soon for sign ups!

I don’t post much about the work I do with my dogs, which needs to change!
Today, is one of the many days I travel on my “off” days to train with other phenomenal trainers in NY! Baby monster got to try out bitework today to see where he is at. He won’t be doing anymore until he matures but 6 months is a good age to see where his natural drives are at and he exceeded my expectation! Groot also got to do the bitey things and of course had a blast. He is working on control around the helper!
If anyone doesn’t know, I train my shepherds in a sport called Shutzhund, where they test the qualities of the German shepherd including nosework/tracking, obedience, and bitework!

Lastly, Willow Jean graduated our Board & Train program! This little girl also had a quite bit of fear, lacked confidence, and needed help with her trust in humans! The 3 weeks with her has been such a pleasure and she has changed so much! We have worked a ton on her confidence building around new environments, novel objects, and strangers. She still spooks easily; however recovers much faster! Willow has also learned how to down stay with distractions, walk loosely on a leash, recall outside, leave-it (especially with people food), and door manners! I can’t wait to continue to build her confidence with her owners at home and continue to see her progress!

Interested in our B&T program? Reach out today! We have openings for Jan and Feb!

11/24/2022

Wrangler also graduated our Board & Train program this week and this girl made sooo much progress too! She was a little fearful of strangers and new dogs but we built up her confidence a ton around new environments and new people! She had very little focus through distractions and hated having her nails trimmed. Throughout her time with us, she has learned a down stay through distractions, improved her recall, loose leash walking, leave-it, introductions with new people, calmly handle nail trims, and place stays while people come into the home! She has excelled and I am so proud of her!!

Interested in our B&T program? Reach out today! We have openings for Jan and Feb!

11/24/2022

Sweet Cassie graduated our 4-week Board & Train program and I am beyond proud of her progress! She came to me very skittish and fearful of life! Her fear presented in some explosive reactivity towards any strangers! She was very unsure of new environments or situations, but now look at this confident girl!!! She can handle pretty much any store (even a busy TJ Maxx), walk through large crowds, and even settle within new environments! She has even learned that the car is a safe space. She used to resource guard and react heavily during any car rides, now she is calm and relaxed! We also worked on staying on place for an extended time to work on her fear with new people coming into the home!
I’m so proud of her and cannot wait to see how she does at home!

While snow has canceled and changed a lot of things, the dogs have sure loved it!! Each one has gotten plenty of time in it and has loved every second of it!

Classes for tomorrow are CANCELLED! I will reach out to everyone individually but safety is our main concern. It looks like we may even get more snow and a lot of back roads aren’t even plowed (including ours). Stay safe everyone and enjoy the snow days!!

Unfortunately the Paws-giving Festival tomorrow has been CANCELLED😭
We were holding off in hopes the weather people were wrong, but it looks like it will just keep going until Sunday!
I am not sure what Sunday will hold in regards to classes and 4-H club, as we get closer, I will update!
Everyone stay safe and stay inside (well at least off the roads)!
We will see if we can do something in December but otherwise we will have an event in the Spring very similar because we just know everyone will have a blast!!

Let’s talk resource guarding!! This is a behavior quite common in dogs and can be dangerous if not addressed.
Resource guarding is when a dog reacts due to a perceived threat to a valuable resource in their possession. This is most often a learned/developed behavior with dogs who have a genetic predisposition to possession and guarding, such as breeds like shepherds, bullies, and hounds.
Prevention of resource guarding begins in puppyhood and can save you on a lot of trouble later in life. Often people think that messing with their dogs food, treats, bones, etc. to “show them” you can take things away and give it back is actually the worst thing you can do and sometimes even causes resource guarding. Messing with or taking away your dogs prized possessions, will cause them to look at anyone who approaches while they have something as a threat, often causing behaviors like growling, stiffness, running away, lunging, and more dangerously biting.
The BEST thing you can do for your dog to help prevent resource guarding is to add something to their resource every time you approach. For example, throwing them a treat into their or around their bowl or bone when you walk by or come up to them. This will start to help them realize when you approach good things happen instead of bad. If you do ever have to take something away, then always trading with a treat is a sure way to make taking a positive experience.

Check out this video. The first clip is of a dog who has developed resource guarding. While she doesn’t bite or lash out, her body language screams being uncomfortable (stiff, holding onto the treat tight, turning away, staring, etc). the second clip is of a young puppy who already shows the tendencies of potentially gaining resource guarding behaviors in the future, he is also stiff, ears very fast while I am around, and doesn’t lift his head for anything. The 3rd clip is of a dog who shows no resource guarding and will give up his bully stick. The last clips are of ways to prevent/help fix resource guarding, by adding food, trading, and interacting with them without taking anything away!

I have been so behind on posting but the long over due progress update from one of our board and trains, Wrangler, is here!
She has been with us for 2 weeks now and is excelling!! She is just over one year and came to us with a bit of reactivity and needed work on basic obedience and confidence building! So far, her reactivity has become almost non-existent which is awesome!! Check out all she has learned so far!

All of our Board and Train dogs saying hi on this breezy chilly day! Each one is progressing so nicely with their individual goals!!
We hope everyone is having a great week! ❤️

Sometimes training looks a bit different, is a little “boring”, and is not ”flashy” or impressive. Sometimes it’s just about existing with a dog, helping them feel comfortable in a scary environment and building relationship with them!
Cassie is one of our board and train dogs and is here with us due to her extreme anxiety, reactivity, and lack of confidence as a whole. She usually trembles in a vehicle, barks at anything that moves (especially people), and barks and cowers at loud noises and unfamiliar environments.
We have worked hard on building a relationship and showing her that the world isn’t as scary as it seems. This is only the beginning of her progress with us and I am so proud of just how far she has come! The other day we sat in the parking lot and went a little ways into Lowes and she gave no big reactions AND she even played and felt comfortable to explore a bit! Her body language was a lot more comfortable then I expected.
I cannot wait to see how much more she improves!

Check out our first week of group classes this week!!!
Our Community Obedience class went to Thompson park and rocked their obedience around a lot of distraction!
Our Puppy and Basic class dogs started their hand at engagement, sit, confidence building, and their name!
Our Intermediate class worked on their obedience they have learned around new dogs and more challenging distractions to get ready for the Canine Good Citizen test!

This is our last session of classes for the year, we will begin more classes in the new year!

This week was our last week of our group classes!! I am so very proud of each and every one of these dogs and their awesome owners who have put in so much hard work into training with their dogs! It has defintiely paid off!
We missed a few people who were unable to make graduation this week but they also did so well! Congratulations to everyone and cannot wait to see them again in more classes!

Our next set of group classes start on Sunday!! We have a few spots left and only a couple days left to sign up! Reach out today if you are interested!

10/24/2022

Our new class, Scentwork, just started up last week!! We worked on scent recognition and discrimination for all the beginner dogs, and set up a little search area for the one more advanced scentwork dog! Each one did so well and had so much fun!

Did you know, on average, a dog has 200 million scent receptors in their nose?! That is 5,000 times more than a humans (only 400 scent receptors)!
Scentwork is an amazing activity to teach your dog, most dogs absolutely love it, it harnesses their innate sense of smell and gets their mind working!
Mental stimulation is so very important to keep your dog satisfied and enriched!

Interested in this class? Reach out today for more information!

Lucky charm graduated our Board & Train program yesterday and I could not be prouder with her progress she has made in the last 3 weeks at just 5 months old!
She has built so much confidence and gained so many skills. She learned leave-it, heel, down, and recall all around very distracting environments. She has learned to settle in various settings and learned strangers are not as scary as she thought!
During her stay, she went to puppy classes, daycare, many stores, an event, and the park!

Interested in our Board & Train program? Reach out today for more information!

I apologize for being late on the raffle announcement tonight!
But here is the winner!!!! Congratulations Carol! Thank you everyone who signed up for the raffle! There will be more in the future, we will do one at every event we go to and when we reach certain milestones!

Paws4Potter 7th Annual "Making A Mark On K9 Cancer" Dog Walk was a blast to say the least! The day turned out to be perfect and so many people came out to support finding a cause for K9 Cancer and all the dogs who lost their lives to this horrible disease. It was such a great turn-out!
Two of our board & trains, Lucky Charm and Lucy made an appearance and did soooo well! They both exceeded our expectations, especially considering they are under 6 months old. This event is so hard to remain focused since there are so many distractions but they aced it!

We collected names for a raffle during the event, the winner will be announced on a Facebook Live tomorrow at 7pm!!!
