So well said!

When training horses, everyone should remember that power doesn’t come from the front—it starts behind. If the hind end isn’t working, nothing else matters.

To truly activate the engine is to ask the horse to step under, to carry weight, to push from behind with strength and purpose. This isn’t about flashy movement—it’s about real work. Honest connection. No shortcuts.

Engagement builds topline, Not head position. When the hindquarters are active and the back lifts, the frame develops from back to front—correct, strong, balanced.

You’re not just riding forward. You’re training the body to support collection, to channel energy, and to carry with pride. It’s not easy. It takes timing, feel, and persistence. But when it clicks, you’ll feel it: the power, the lightness, the precision.

So ride with intent. Ride with clarity. Build it from behind—every stride, every ride. Because that’s where real progress lives. Don’t also forget the power of lunging & pole work.

Woohoo it’s spring! Well I’m going to pretend it’s spring.

This means the questions regarding summer clinics and training horses are starting to flow.

2025 is the year of no clinics and no training horses. I will be in Homer weekly if you want evening lessons, valley I’m here and you’re welcome to haul in. Not coming to Fairbanks this year.

My focus is on me and the sassy dragon featured here.

For lessons send me a PM space is very limited and those who kept going all winter get priority.

Who is Back to Basics?

We opened our doors the summer of 2014 in the beautiful town of Olympia, WA. A long time dream of owners Sarah and Rob the barn has become a second family not just a place of business. Now going into 2020 we are moving back to Alaska and bringing B2B with us! We look forward to sharing this next adventure with you all.

"Our barn family is amazing, supportive and of course fun!" says owner and instructor Sarah. Sarah grew up in a barn that was made up of young riders and their horses in Alaska. Those memories of long group trail rides, group lessons and barn parties has been the motivation for creating a truly family friendly barn.

Instructor Sarah currently holds 3 national certifications as a riding instructor. Our lesson program is treated as a "living" thing and is constantly evolving and adapting to the needs of our students.
