My husband installed a low doorbell so Buddy could 'feel included.' That was three days ago. I have aged fifteen years."
I need you to understand that this began as a sweet idea.
My husband β€” a man I love very much and am currently reconsidering β€” read an article about enrichment activities for dogs. Mentally stimulating things. Ways to make them feel like part of the family.
He installed a second doorbell button. Low on the door. Nose height.
"It'll be cute," he said.
"He'll never figure it out," he said.
Buddy figured it out in forty five minutes.
Day one β€” he rang it seven times. We thought it was funny. We praised him. We gave him treats.
I cannot stress enough what a catastrophic mistake that was.
Day two β€” fourteen rings. Once at 5:47am. I opened the door in my pajamas expecting a package. It was Buddy. He wanted to show me the yard.
Day three β€” I stopped counting. He has developed a SYSTEM. Ring bell. Human appears. Ring bell again before human can leave. Repeat until desired outcome is achieved. The desired outcome appears to simply be watching humans appear and disappear like a live action vending machine.
My Ring doorbell app has sent me forty one notifications today.
FORTY. ONE.
My neighbors think we have constant visitors. My mother called to ask if everything was okay because she kept seeing "motion at front door" alerts on the family account she definitely should not have access to.
My husband tried to un-teach him yesterday. Buddy rang the bell, my husband ignored it, Buddy rang it eleven more times without stopping, my husband caved on ring twelve.
Buddy has now learned that persistence wins.
The student has become the teacher. The dog has become the husband.
I live here now. In this bell. Forever.

My dog stopped walking and refused to move. When I saw why, I had to sit down on the grass and cry."
We walk that park every Tuesday and Thursday. Same path, same time, 4pm.
Buddy has never once stopped like that.
He just β€” locked. Leash went tight. Four paws planted. And he was staring at this man on the bench like he was the only person on earth.
I tried to pull him back. I really did. I didn't want to bother anyone.
But Buddy looked back at me β€” just once β€” with that look he gets. The one that means he knows something I don't.
So I let the leash go.
He walked straight to that bench and sat down in front of the man like he had an appointment.
The man's name is Harold. He told me afterward, while Buddy sat with his head in Harold's lap for twenty-two minutes.
Harold's wife of 51 years passed in February.
His kids live in different states. He comes to that bench on Tuesdays and Thursdays because it was her favorite spot. They used to bring sandwiches together. He still brings two β€” makes both of them β€” and then wraps hers back up and takes it home.
He said nobody had touched him in four months.
Not a hug. Not a handshake. Nothing.
Then a golden retriever walked up and put his head in his lap like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Harold comes to the park on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
So do we now.
🐾 Share this for Harold. Share this for everyone eating alone on a bench somewhere wishing someone would just stop and sit with them. Drop a ❀️ if this reached you.

He found a puddle at 9:47am. Church starts at 10:00."
I want you to understand that I had everything under control this morning.
Kids were dressed. Casserole was in the car. I was wearing my good shoes.
I let Buddy out for two minutes β€” TWO minutes β€” to use the bathroom before we left.
What I did not account for was the puddle.
The puddle that apparently, according to Buddy, was the greatest discovery in the history of the world and required his immediate and complete personal investigation.
Both paws. Then his chest. Then β€” I still don't fully understand the physics of this β€” his entire front half.
I stood on that porch in my good shoes screaming his name while he looked me dead in the eyes and kept going.
He knew exactly what he was doing.
We were 22 minutes late for church. I walked in carrying a soaking wet golden retriever under one arm because I couldn't leave him in the car like that and I couldn't put him back in the house because he would have destroyed the couch.
Pastor Mike stopped mid-sentence.
Buddy wagged at him.
Pastor Mike started laughing and said "Let him stay.
Buddy slept through the entire sermon in the front pew and three people came up afterward to say it was the best Sunday they'd had in months.
I cannot explain this dog. I cannot control this dog.
But my goodness I love this dog. 🐾
Drop a πŸ˜‚ if your dog has ever absolutely destroyed your plans with zero regrets. Share this with someone who needs a laugh today β€” we all do.

He's been sitting there since 3pm."
My husband passed away eight months ago. Every single day at 4:15 β€” the time he used to pull into the driveway β€” Buddy goes to that porch and waits.
I've tried to explain it to him. I really have.
But how do you tell a dog that the person who loved him most isn't coming home?
He waits anyway. Every day. Without fail.
I used to cry watching him. Now I just sit down next to him and we wait together.
Maybe that's what love looks like when words run out.
