This little outdoorsman shot this trophy whitetail, they lost blood so his father contacted me in need of our services. We put a plan in place to run this trail the following morning.18 hrs afer shot Griffin locked on right off. He looked awesome solid tracking for 1.5 miles through trying terrain long the Big River. Finally led us to a deep river crossing/property line. After a slightly tearful discussion on the riverbank we planned on gaining permission and getting across. With some grit and determination from all parties we landed on the opposite bank 20 minutes later. What we found on that opposite bank would bring smiles to everyone’s faces. Thanks for trusting us to track your deer! Congrats on your successful Missouri youth season hunt. Gary Runyon

Saturday mornings hunt/track was extra special my niece and brother in law got to experience their first successful deer hunt together, and Griffin and I are thankful to be a part of it. After finding no blood after 150 yards (243 cal) we decided to drop Griffin on it. 250 yards later we were standing over this youth season trophy whitetail 😁 congrats on your first deer! I’m excited for many more successful hunts with this growing hunter. Uncle Treasure is so proud of you! Sam Unerstall

Continuing from yesterday’s post:

Many of you share similar thoughts to ours. While we do believe grid searching can reduce recovery rates due to ground disturbance, most experienced tracking dogs can work through that contamination with minimal impact.

What we suspect plays a bigger role is how grid searches often push wounded deer farther from the point of loss. Once bumped, a deer typically travels much farther, and occasionally in a completely different direction than before. This, we believe, is why drone recovery rates drop even more than dog recoveries after grid searches.

Drones usually rely on hunter input about the deer’s last known direction, so their search efforts are focused accordingly. If the deer changes course after being bumped, those searches may miss the mark. Additionally, drone recoveries are often limited by flight time and distance, whereas a dog can continue tracking as long as the handler and property boundaries allow.

Those are our working theories. What do you think? We’d love to hear from both tracking dog teams and thermal drone operators. Please keep it respectful as this discussion isn’t about criticizing any method, but about understanding what the data might be telling us.

🤔 If grid searching compromises the scent line for tracking dogs… why do drones suffer too?

Many claim grid searches “contaminate the scent line,” making it harder for dogs to trail a wounded deer. But developing TRAKR data shows something surprising:

🐕 Dog recoveries drop 17% after grid searches.
🚁 Drone recoveries drop even more - 41% - despite scent not being a factor at all.

So maybe the issue isn’t just scent.
Maybe grid searching changes the entire recovery dynamic.

💬 What do you think the contributing factors are? We'll post our theory tomorrow.

Last Sunday we tracked this buck 2.5 miles on a suspected liver shot ( it was not liver) all signs led me to believe this was a live deer. Fast forward 4 days get a call last night from a longtime friend in need of help. Liver shot right down the creek from Sundays track. We arrived this morning at first light. We Had a suspicion this was the same buck from Sunday. Had a few issues in the raging creek bed locating scent.,So we tried some wind scenting techniques along a ridge. Griffin locked on right away and in a matter of minutes we were standing over this tough critter. !!!Recovery!!! A Small laceration to the deer’s left arm wasn’t enough from hunter #1 / hunter #2 on the other hand………Two hunters chasing the same deer… one Victor
