I found this explanation of Amendment 5 and thought I would share.......

I saw the Amendment 5 commercial tonight and it got under my skin.

The ad makes it sound simple — make big tech and data centers pay their fair share so everyday Missourians don’t have to. And honestly? That’s a real issue. Data centers in this state have pulled in roughly $77 million in tax breaks. Companies like Google and Meta pay zero sales tax on the billions in equipment they use to build these facilities. That’s a legitimate grievance.

But here’s where the commercial stops telling the truth.

Amendment 5 doesn’t actually require data centers to pay anything. There’s no language in the amendment that closes those corporate loopholes. It just gives the legislature broad authority to restructure the entire sales tax system. Meaning they could make big tech pay — or they could keep every single corporate exemption exactly as-is while expanding sales taxes onto things you buy every single day.

And what would those new taxes potentially cover?

The amendment eliminates two constitutional protections that Missouri voters already approved — once in 2010 and again in 2015 — that prevented politicians from expanding sales taxes onto real estate and previously untaxed goods and services. Those weren’t gifts from the government. You voted for those. Amendment 5 wipes them off the books.

What replaces them? Verbal promises. Governor Kehoe has said healthcare and housing will be protected. But when reporters and doctors pressed for specifics, the answer was clear: that protection is not written into the amendment. Not a single line. Doctors in St. Louis are already speaking out about the possibility of sales taxes being applied to medical care.

And here’s the part that should bother everyone regardless of party:

If this passes, Missouri politicians get a 5-year window to restructure the entire sales tax system without a public vote. No referendum. No check-in with voters. Just the legislature, behind closed doors, deciding what gets taxed and what doesn’t — and who gets to keep their exemptions.

You’d be trading a tax cut you can see on paper for tax hikes you can’t predict, with no safety net, based entirely on a TV commercial.

Missouri has a history of voters showing up and protecting themselves when the legislature won’t. We did it in 2010. We did it in 2015. Don’t undo that work on August 4th.

December 4, 1966 - March 3, 2026

Bernard R. Barnes,59, of Union, passed away on March 3, 2026. Bernard, son of the late Russell Barnes and Thelma nee Clark, was born on December 4, 1966, in Washington. He received his education from Washington High School.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold Buril and grandparents, George and Hazel Buril and John and Clara Clark.

Among his survivors are his siblings, Kathryn Buril of Little Rock, Arkansas, Sandra Williams and husband Willie of Shiloh, IL, Hazel Brison of Merriam, KS, Glen Buril and wife Emma of San Antonio, TX, and Dwight Buril and wife Paula of Universal City, TX; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 4-7 p.m. at Nieburg-Vitt, Miller Funeral Home. Funeral service will begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Nieburg-Vitt, Miller Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Washington City Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to the charity of choice.

March 14, 1988~March 14 2026…
BOWWOW 🐶& MEOW 🙀 what a journey...Thank you Father God ❤️ for blessing the work of my hands 🙌 in grooming all these many years...I have met many friends and some shared life with and much prayer in circumstances. It has been a Joy and Pleasure to serve my clients and their 4 legged fur babies. So Thankful for Stacy York my mentor and friend since I was 12 years old…she taught me everything I know and gave me the opportunity to start Critter Corral back in 1988! She’s gone on to be with Jesus 11-28-2024; but I know she’s looking down proud! ALSO, thank you Lily Strait for coming to work for me in March of 2020 when we were taking care of my dad on Hospice before he passed (2020)! You have been with me these past 6 years and have Blessed me through thick & thin by keeping things going through my knee surgery (2022) along with Kayla Phillips
and the passing of my momma (2023)…you’ve given me good pointers ~like investing in our NEW Electric grooming tables etc. THANK YOU Lily Strait! I’m looking forward to many more years of grooming Lord Willing! God Bless ALL of my Clients & their Fur Babies for allowing us to Serve you ALL these 38 years!
