The (Zuko, Tulip, and ) helped me potentially save a dog’s life today. The (photo 2) was off leash and followed my pack into the street as we crossed. Once we were on the sidewalk, I scruffed the dog because he didn’t have a collar on. I quickly turned one of the leashes into a slip lead and used it to safely restrain the dog. He was anxious about being restrained and began to snap. Some of the other dogs began to react to his anxious energy, but I remained calm. I handled the dogs cautiously to prevent any dogs or myself from being bitten until we could make it inside the firehouse. Once the dogs were calm, I let the puppy off of the makeshift slip lead (my dog was attached to the other end), where he could hang out with the firefighters until being picked up by animal control. Shoutout to Howard and the other firefighters for helping me get this puppy safely off of the streets.
As a friendly reminder for dog owners, please make sure your dog wears a collar (preferably with proper identification) at all times. Many dogs slip out of their collars, harnesses, etc. because they are not properly fitted. You should never be able to fit more than 2 fingers under a dog’s collar/harness. If you’re using a head harness, you should never be able to fit more than 1 finger underneath. Prioritizing a dog’s comfort is meaningless if it results in a dead dog. So please, please, please check your dog’s collar, harness, etc. regularly.
