Tyler Muto - Dog Trainer, Speaker, Coach
Here at Indigo Dog Training, we are strong advocates of the humane use of training tools that help to make good dog training even better by providing our dogs with clear instructions that make the training consistent, reliable, fair, and fun. All of our trainers have studied Tyler Mutoβs dog training system extensively and believe passionately in his mission.
This is a great post about the ever growing debate about e-collars and why picking and choosing your dog training company should always come with a lot of research.
When we moved to a three week board and train versus a two week program, we got several prospective clients who chose to go with other companiesβ two week programs because they were really concerned about leaving their dog somewhere for that extra week. We totally get it! The thought of leaving your dog somewhere for an extended period of time should ALWAYS come with careful considerations.
What we also noticed though was by taking that extra week and making sure we teach the dogs through positive motivation FIRST well before using any sort of advanced training tool led to dogs that were happier, less stressed, and much more self-motivated. We will start to advocate much more about the proper use of tools in future posts to come, but in the mean time, check out this post by Tyler and know that Indigo Dog Training is strongly committed to safe, humane, fun, and reliable dog training to help make sure you get the dog of your dreams!
**Electronic Collar Training Exposed**
This is a behind the scenes, un-edited clip of a trainer using an electronic collar on a dog!
Seriously - There have been several videos making the rounds showing extremely un-skilled, and un-educated trainers using electronic collars in ways that are reckeless and potentially abusive. There have also been numerous news stories about animal abuse and death at several different Off Leash K9 franchise locations (A franchise that bases all their training on the electronic collar).
I have spent the bulk of my career educating people about these tools, why they are so valuable for dogs and their owners, how to use them properly and humanely, and defending their use against organizations and individuals who are trying to have them outlawed. I did this initially as a private individual, and then on an institutional level in the capacities of Director, Legisaltive Commitee Member, Vice President, and President of the International Association of Canine Professionals over the course of 6+ years. In other words, I have dedicated a decade to defending the use of electronic collars, and advocating for better education into their proper use. Heck - I litterally produced one of the most thorough educational courses on the electronic collar that is available.
With all that said - It is difficult to defend access to these tools when there are "professionals" out there using them in such crude ways. Make no mistake, the behavior of the trainers in some of these videos is deplorable and morally reprehensable.
I will continue to advocate for the proper use of the electronic collar and all the benefits that it brings to dogs. We see everyday, at our training center, how dogs flourish with the clarity, precision, and freedom that the electronic collar provides. But if we as a professional community don't start holding ourselves to higher standards, our ability to use our own professional judgment to determine what tools, techniques and training plans are right for each dog and owner will be taken away from us.
Even writing that last paragraph was a challenge - when so many trainers are demonstrating that they lack the required knowlege and skill to have their judgment trusted.
Where do we go from here?
I am not sure.
It appears we are stuck between the slippery slope of regulation, which exposes the industry to the danger of animal rights activists swooping in eliminating access to the training tools that so many families need to keep dogs in their homes, and prevent surrender and behavioral euthanasia; and no-regulation, which exposes dogs and owners to the risks of incompetent professionals.
I am feeling saddened, jaded, and worried about the future of our industry, and ultimately the future of dog ownership.
But it won't stop me from helping the dogs that I can.
Here is an unplanned, uncut, video of me working Murphy, a young Berna-doodle on an electronic collar. it's not my best training, I am not doing everything technically correct, but we are learning and having fun. I hope you enjoy seeing what it is supposed to look like. No stress, no talking negatively about the dog, no heavy corrections to a dog that doesn't know his expectations. Just a fun training session, with a really cool dog that made me feel a little better.

Lulu place outside

Chief learned his name!!
Chief is a 10 week old lab puppy in for our puppy headstart program, he has learned his name and how to sit this week!

We do our best to expose our training camp dogs to as many different distractions as we can during their final week of training to help solidify their training. Pippin really lucked out to be tested by a Marine One flyover right after it took off from the White House today. He was just a bit bummed he didn't get a shoutout tweet about it. π

Tucker and Yong Gi wrapping up their 3-week training camps with a field trip to the National Mall in Washington, DC to work on lots of distance, duration, and distraction!

Before and After Dog Training Transformation - Leash Pulling W...
Get a glimpse of what our three week training camp can help you accomplish with your dog! We love taking dogs on field trips for their final week of board and train to practice their training in the real world. In this fun video, we went on a field trip to Old Town Alexandria with Gus and Harbor on the first day of camp and then again 3 weeks later on the day before they went home. Great attention, staying calm, and no more leash pulling!

Just a typical Friday night here with training camper Simon soaking in some baby distractions to help him stay calm and chill in the midst of all the toys, noises, and movement. Simon has a new baby brother at home waiting for him so we've been using Klara to help get him acquainted with what he has coming over the next year as baby grows. Klara is pretty distracting but Hokey Pokey Elmo proved to be the biggest test. π

Welcome To Indigo Dog Training!
I am very excited to officially launch the rebranding of Liberty K9 to Indigo Dog Training! After operating under Liberty K9 Dog Training for 13 years, I decided it was time for a rebranding that better embodies our mission of helping companion pet dogs and their families. Why Indigo Dog Training? Commonly the most forgotten color of the rainbow, indigo exemplifies the essential dog training qualities of being perceptive, intuitive, and structured. We also wanted a more easily recognizable brand as we aim to create lots of free high quality dog training content for people around the world through our social media accounts. Thank you all for joining me on this journey and your continued support!

Having some fun with Lola doing an exercise we like to call "switching gears." This is a really tough concept for a lot of dogs to grasp, especially as the distractions increase in intensity. Towards the end of a dog's camp, we like to practice it with some other dogs being very loose and unhinged. We always say we like to train dogs to be dogs, not robots, and part of that is allowing them to have clean, energetic fun but still expecting them to be able to "switch gears" and redirect their attention back to us and relax if we need them to. Sure we can get the dogs to have stellar obedience around controlled distractions but getting them to keep their cool when the distractions aren't so controlled is a different ballgame and it's imperative when expecting them to be trained where you need it the most... in the real world. How do we work up to this? Lay the foundation for good obedience and engagement with the handler and work on lots of impulse control exercises. That can range anywhere from sitting at thresholds, waiting for food, playing tug or retrieve games, and fun, quick, random obedience drills (think rally obedience).

Good afternoon everybody! Hanging around Lincoln Park in DC today with Lola for her final field trip. Going to be reviewing how we tackle leash reactivity and how to best practice your training while still keeping your dog and other dogs and people safe.

To work on Lola's bad leash reactivity around other dogs, we are using our last few field trips before she goes home this weekend to get her around more and more distractions. While visiting Founder's Park in Old Town Alexandria, we have her focus more on the handler and help keep her calm while watching other dogs playing.

Another fun video of Lola's first field trip to DC. We were able to use these great barriers in front of the Dept of Health building to practice some loose leash heeling and figure 8s!

At the National Mall today getting some distraction training in with Lola. We're focusing on keeping her cool, calm, and collected in the presence of distractions!
