Paws of Southwest

Paws of Southwest A nonprofit community organization comprising dog owners and residents in the ANC-6D neighborhood of SW Washington, DC. The Paws of Southwest is building community through a love of our dogs.

Sponsored by the Southwest Neighborhood Assembly, The Paws of Southwest is focused on creating an off-leash dog park at Lansburgh Park, located on Delaware Ave., SW. We also know that dogs can help bring together people in a community, and we want to build on that by providing ways for people to have fun with their dogs, educate our neighbors about dogs as companions, as well as promote responsible dog ownership.

Dear Paws of Southwest / Lansburgh Dog Park friends: We are very saddened to tell you of the passing of a dear friend and one of our founding members, Hannelore Meyer. She left us early this morning, shortly after suffering a stroke. Hannelore was a tireless volunteer who loved music and the SW Community she called home for so many years. Most of all, Hannelore loved dogs and all animals. "Pocket" had been her most recent partner up until his passing a couple of years ago. As a founding member and treasurer of Paws of Southwest, she was one of the original group of us who advocated for and helped establish the Lansburgh Dog Park. I know I will miss seeing her around the neighborhood and talking about dogs and music. Rest in peace, Hannelore - I know Pocket and the rest were waiting for you!🌹🐾🌹🐾🌹🐾🌹

Online Survey Software | Qualtrics Survey Solutions

Dear PAWS of Southwest Dog Owners:

We were contacted by the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) about a research project they are conducting. Please see the message and link below to determine if you would like to participate. //

// I wanted to let you know about a survey HRA has just launched. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused major changes to people’s lives across the globe. We do not know for sure how this stressful time might be impacting the welfare of pet dogs or what carryover effects it might have when dogs suddenly find themselves home alone down the road. While we obviously hope we will not experience anything similar again, this does give us a unique opportunity to examine the effects of major changes to routine on our canine companions. The Humane Rescue Alliance and the University of Lincoln, UK, are partnering together to understand how dogs are coping and continue to cope after the pandemic.

We would love it if you could take 6-10 minutes to help us, by participating in the survey.

Seeing that this group is active again, I was wondering if anyone knows the reason why lights were voted against in the original planning for Lansburgh? Not a factor right now as we head into summer but in winter, it’s inoperable after 5/530. This is too bad since it’s the only public dog park within walking distance of the neighborhood. Realizing that things take time, wondering if there’s any possibility of getting lights so we can actually use it before and after work next winter?
Hey former neighbors (I used to live in SW). My husband and I have an elderly dog walker who loves to take our dog to the dog park when she watches him. Today she was bitten by a dog and the owner ran off. This is the second incident we’ve had at that dog park. The first was several years ago and we had to have our dogs ear stitched from an attach. That owner also ran off. Not sure if anything can be done but wanted to send out a warning about an aggressive dog in the neighborhood.
I know this is a long shot, but I'm looking for the owner of a medium-sized black dog who was walking near the Wharf around 6:30pm last night. I was out on a run wearing a yellow shirt when the dog jumped at me and bit me (very minor.) I didn't realize at first that the dog had broken the skin so didn't talk with the owner. I am not looking to get the dog in trouble at all, just hoping to get in contact with the owner to make sure the dog is up-to-date on shots to save myself a lot of hassle!
Last week, I had to say goodbye to our sweet Pete, who was 12-1/2. He was one of the reasons I worked to help establish the Lansburgh Dog park. He was a terrific canine ambassador in our SWDC neighborhood. Cap and I miss him terribly! No dog every had a bigger heart or kinder soul.
A very special Thank You to Paws of SW for coming to the Gelato in the Garden event yesterday! We appreciate your support of the SW Community Gardens
Good morning everyone! I will be over by the dog run at Yards Park today 10-4 with a pop up dog comfort station as part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival! We will have doggie giveaways, treats, water and more! If you're headed to the pups in the park game, it's only a short walk over! https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10156974335928132&id=32347678131
Today marks the first day of the 2018 Chinese New Year and this is the Year of The Dog. And we love a hotel that not only knows how to bring in the Lunar New Year in style but loves furry canines. In our opinion, Noone does both better than the dog-friendly Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group hotels. Worldwide, each MO hotel, from Barcelona and Marrakech to London and Hong Kong is celebrating the New Year in their own creative way (check out their Instagram pages or swipe for a few examples). But our favorite has got to be the Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC that is celebrating by offering guests a Pets x MO package: guests and their pets get, through next February 4, things like luxury pet beds, complimentary valet parking, and pet amenities. What’s best is that 10% of the package will be donated to Paws of Southwest, a local neighborhood nonprofit organization supporting dogs and dog parks. All photo 📷 credits to Mandarin Oriental.
Hi SW DC dog lovers. I am planning an event for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, our annual Prevent Cancer 5k Walk/Run & Health Fair held at Nationals Park on Sunday, November 5th. All dogs are FREE to attend and tomorrow is the last day to get $5 off your registration for humans using code EARLYBIRD. You can walk/run the course with your pup, get some free treats and doggie education at our health fair and join us in the fight to stop cancer before it starts! Kids 10 and under are also FREE to come! And my pup Theo will be there, so come join us! :-)
Dog found on M street this morning. Name is Gotti. No number. Being taken to vet for possible chip ID. Relevant authorities being notified. Anyone recognize him/can help get him home?
Will the dog park be open today? Would love to bring our dog over to frolic in the snow.
LOST DOG Name: Spartacus Black Pomeranian who is wearing a light blue harness. 10lbs, very friendly and currently has a lion shaped haircut. Please call or text (559)381-1867 if you see or find him.
