Our Disability Pride Month celebration continues! Let me introduce you to our Leggies, Flippy, Hopscotch, and Hope! These three were entrusted to us by in 2021. Each of them have deformed legs similar to Finn’s situation, the deformation occurred during metamorphosis from tadpole to frog.
As I mentioned in Finn’s post, these types of deformities can happen while breeding large batches of frogs. In the wild, disabled froglets are almost always picked off by predators. In captivity, if the breeder decides to give them a chance at life (in some situations culling is truly the best option to not let the froglet suffer), many disabled frogs can live happy, healthy, and pretty normal lives! They just need a slightly adjusted enclosure set up as they have a knack for flipping themselves over and falling from the sky.
Each of the leggies has their own personality! Flippy and Hope operate more like twins, very similar but still individuals! Flip is a bit more reserved, he’s not afraid to charge for food though, and adores cuddling up with his tank mates. Hopscotch is the smallest of the three and has two deformed legs instead of one. He’s permanently sat in a splits position but has no issue getting around the tank. He’s very shy and is often a lil stepped on by the other frogs. Hope is our spunky lady, she knows what she wants and she will make sure she gets it! The last slide is a baby photo of Hope chomping me, which is still her favorite activity. I have been so honored to take care of these little ones, they have taught me a lot and have brought so much joy into my life as our first frogs with a “birth defect” (not caused by neglect/MBD.) I know they have brought y’all so much happiness too, Our rescue wouldn’t be the same without them! 🐸❤️
