More media coverage on the stolen statue -- including an interview from one of our board members and a member of the Capitol Hill families that funded the $30,000 piece of community art:

The statue was sculpted to honor teacher Bernadette Bloom who loved to take her students to the FDR Memorial with its own statue of Fala.

LOST DOG: The Scottie statue has been stolen from the park and police are offering a $1,000 reward:

It’s another classic case of a stolen pup - only this one weighs 500 pounds and is made of bronze.

Anyone know what in the 2024 Paris Olympics Snoop Doggy Dog happened to the corner of the dog park? We've reported it to DC DPR 311 to get fixed, (which you should always do if you ever see anything wrong) but we're still trying to figure out how it even happened. There doesn't appear to be tire tracks... We're kind of baffled. Is this where the Terminator landed in T2: Judgment Day?

🤞 and makes this a priority to fix immediately. Please feel free to file your own requests to help get their attention. We've struggled in the past 3+ years to get their responses on dozens of requests. In the meantime, be careful, pay attention to your dogs, and watch out for any Terminators.

We had a wet and wild park cleaning last night. After the multiple-days of rain, the turf was pretty swampy, but at least now it's sanitized swampy. Thanks for all our volunteers who show up and help make the park a safe and clean space for the community!

You may have noticed a unique ice feature developing at the dog park! After filing dozens of requests with DC Department of Parks and Recreation to get the leaking small park's fountain fixed, they neglected to do so, and now it's become an ice sculpture and the valve on the water bottle filler is stuck so it's dumping water down the drain 24/7. They also were negligent in turning off the water for the Winter, so there's potential for the pipes to further freeze, crack, and leak.

It's been 9-10 months we've been trying to get these issues addressed with DPR and their maintenance service provider DC Department of General Services. This has been par for the course for us, and you've probably seen us post about this before on social media or at the park, BUT there is an exciting opportunity to do something about it!

Charles Allen is collecting feedback from the public about DPR+DGS' services -- so you can file your comments about the experience and service we receive. Remember that huge pool that developed for most of 2023 due to the large park fountain leaking? That is DPR+DGS. Share your experience about how they have been serving our public parks here:

Thank you to our board members Brian, Jen, Lydia, and Will, who helped with an unscheduled park sanitizing this Saturday morning after we FINALLY got the park water partially fixed.

It took:
✅ 8 MONTHS
✅ More than 40+ emails
✅ More than 2 dozen 311 requests (almost all were closed without resolution)
✅ Repeat messages requesting escalation to , ANC rep Nic Wilson, and
👎 and his office never responded to any of our messages over the past 8 months

…but the contractor who does the maintenance of FINALLY fixed 3 of the 4 issues with the water at the dog park and we have functioning hose bibs to do the park sanitizing!

This is especially crucial with the new dog respiratory illness sweeping across the country, which has now been identified in nearby Pennsylvania.

Thank you to all the community members who helped file requests and escalated this to their representatives! We hope the city services improve in the future and we can keep the park a safe and healthy place for everyone.

🚨 URGENT APPEAL FOR COMMUNITY HELP🚨
Hey everyone, we need your help to save us from the swamp that’s taking over the dog park. For more than 3 months now, both water fountains in the Virginia Ave Dog Park have been broken, and the situation is getting out of hand. 😡

🐾 The Large Dog Park fountain is leaking constantly, creating a large pool of algae and wasting the city's water resources, and the hose bib is also broken so we can't sanitize the park. 🌿

🐶 The Small Dog Park fountain’s hose bib has has been broken all year and it's also leaking water and creating an unsafe algae pool.🤦‍♀️

We've done everything we can as volunteer community members to get this fixed. We've filed countless maintenance requests with DC Department of Parks and Recreation and DC Department of General Services, reached out to area ANC commissioners, Mayor Bowser, and Council members, but nothing has gotten it resolved.

DC DGS keeps closing our tickets, claiming the issue is resolved, but nothing is happening. And when we follow up with them or open new tickets, they say it'll take 60-90 days again. This is unacceptable!

Due to their negligence, our community volunteers have been unable to sanitize the dog park throughout the entire Summer and now there's now a growing pool of green algae around both fountains, putting our dog community's health at risk. 🦠💧DGS has been unresponsive to the Swampoodle park in NE's needs to get their water fixed and they've started a letter writing campaign too.

We NEED your help!

Please SHARE this post, create your own, file 311 maintenance requests, contact your public representatives, and DC DPR and DGS, urging them to ESCALATE this issue and get our water fountains FIXED completely – the leaks, water pressure, and broken hose bibs. 🙏💪 Let's make our voices heard and ensure our community stays safe and healthy. 💚

Howdy Partner!

This is the virtual dog park for the official "Virginia Avenue Dog Park partners" group which helps maintain and support DC DPR's Virginia Avenue Dog Park located in SE DC, between Capitol Hill and Navy Yard.

We are your neighbors and community volunteers, not paid representatives of DPR, who are volunteering our time and energy to help organize and maintain the dog park as a safe, clean, public space. DC Department of Parks and Recreation owns and maintains the infrastructure (water, fences, trees, benches, etc.) and requires community "Dog Park Partner" groups to pay for and maintain the p**p and trash bags, sanitizing fluids, field maintenance supplies -- including doing the work of cleaning and restocking these supplies.

If you enjoy the park and want to see it thrive as a safe and clean community resource, please get involved and join as a member and volunteer! We post our upcoming meetings in this group, or you can also contact one of the Moderators or email us at [email protected].
