Hi Friends! 🐾

Recently, there was a major safety recall on infant Boppy Loungers. Rather than cutting them in half and destroying them as the manufacturer suggests, please keep our furry friends in mind. These make wonderful beds for cats, kittens, and small dogs! These loungers have a dip in the middle of them allowing animals to snuggle in feeling safe and secure.

If you or someone you know has a defective lounger, feel free to drop it off at our office located at 2101 W. Walnut Street. The critters would be ever so grateful. 💕

Please be safe out there! Just got word from a fellow classmate (ER veterinarian in Seattle area) during her shift yesterday they had 8 dogs DOA due to heat stroke, most short nosed breeds! Please provide shade, plenty of water, allow access to house if possible and DO NOT take any walks unless early in the morning. ~ Dr. S

Stella Hunger for Words is incredible!Sentence structure AND communicating preference. Mind blowing.

⭐️ Stella is a star student!!⭐️

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been targeting new words “on”, “off”, “leash” and “collar” with Stella. Stella loves communicating about her possessions such as her toys, blankets, and bed. I started to wonder if she has preferences about the different collars she wears or about wearing a collar vs. not wearing a collar while inside.

I actually began with just targeting “on” and “off” because I wanted to add core words that could be used across many contexts! We can use “on” and “off” to talk about getting on and off the couch, on and off the bed, putting the blanket on/off the couch, putting Stella’s collar on or taking it off, and so much more. Stella started saying phrases such as “like on” and nudging her collar, “off where” after I took her collar off, or “on park” and looking up at her leash. That’s when I decided to add “collar” and “leash” to give her the opportunity to communicate about these important objects in her life.

Stella and I are both still learning together, but here is a glimpse of her talking about which collar she wanted on at the time! Stella said, “leash leash collar leash want.” I interpreted that as Stella wanting her leash and collar. I grabbed the collar that is easiest to put on with plans to get her leash next. But then, Stella nudged her collar that was attached to her leash, showing me that’s the one she actually meant.

It’s amazing watching Stella learn new words! I can’t wait for more 🐶🗣

Sentence structure AND communicating preference.

PS: I like cats just fine, but they don't eat ticks and fleas and other pests!

It’s cold out there. Please be kind to opossums. Many of them find a cozy place to combat the cold. ( so many we see are missing parts of tails , ears , toes , due to previous frost bite ) and your garage or porch may be the only place they have , they won’t hurt anything , I promise , and shooing them out may be certain death due to lack of shelter. They are Northern America’s ONLY marsupial. And these precious souls eat fleas , ticks and other pests.
Please. This holiday season. Be kind. Be the change you wish to see in the world

So much this!
I weep a little bit every time a breed becomes 'famous'. Dog show, news, tragedy...every single time, the breed gets broken.

Please advise your close ones to choose based in THEIR lifestyle, and about the usual characteristics of the breed (yes, there are exceptions...which means unpredictability).

Most of all, be educated and fair.

I can help with that!

We urge everyone to Not buy the breed because you saw Conan take down an ISIS leader, I spoke with my connections in the industry for trained Malinois and the inquiries to get one jumped by 50% in the past 2 weeks.
Unless you have nothing but time to spend with this high energy dog you will be sorry and chances are this dog will wind up at the shelter and be destroyed because you didn't do your homework! Not fair to the dog. So many shelters are overflowing with animals that will be euthanized and need a great home please #adopt today. #educateyourself

“Hey, thanks for telling me that I’ve been a jerk. I promise I’ll never do that again!”

SAID NO ONE EVER!

But isn’t it funny how we seem to habitually focus on trying to fix problems, rather than celebrating when things actually do go well?

It’s generally the same with our pets. I’ll bet your dog or cat (and especially bird friends!) do not automatically ‘straighten up’ when you point out their character flaws.
This is the first in a series on How to Create a Peaceful Pooch.

Science tells us that punishment does not work in the long run, and this article in the journal Psychology Today, specifically cites research stating that negative human behaviors like hitting, ‘alpha’ behavior and forceful corrections result in aggressive responses. My personal feeling is, “How could they not?!”

As a behaviorist, my strongest held belief is that there is never anger in leadership. When you focus on fostering the behaviors you actually want, the entire training process becomes more enjoyable for everyone.
Let’s look at how this applies to the issues nearly every pet person deals with at one time or another.

The Ugly Half Dozen
• Barking
• Biting
• Separation Anxiety
• On-leash aggression
• Pulling
• Resource guarding
If these are the things you don’t want, ask yourself, what is the opposite of that?

The Blissful Six
• Quiet
• Calm
• Trust
• Great greetings
• Loose leash walking
• Respect
If you want to see some truly happy pets, check out the client gallery at thedoggylama.com/gallery. No day is complete without cute pet pics, right?

So, how do you flip the switch from ARGH! To Ahh?

Be willing to change your own mind
If the struggle isn’t working, then a change of perspective is the only option. I suggest to my life-coaching clients to habitually use the phrase, “Up until now.” If Grover hasn’t understood what you want from him so far, then it’s imperative that you get some hope. Borrow some of mine!

The fact that the dogs rescued from Michael Vick’s dog fighting ring were able to become happy, family dogs should be evidence of nearly any dog’s potential for change. If he has pulled like a truck ‘up until now’ it is still possible that he can learn what you really want.

__Find Methods and Equipment that Work for You
Every creature has its own personality and preferences. Thinking that all creatures are the same and should be dealt with just like in the old days is an error. By extension, the tools that worked for your previous pets might not necessarily work for your current cutie.

__Focus on Fun
Isn’t it true that you tend to do more of what you like and less of what you don’t?

Dogs and cats are even less inclined to struggle with behaviors they don’t like. They have no social reason to comply.

__Find a training routine that brings a smile to your face. If you can’t imagine that such a thing exists, drop me a line. I can help.

The Cardinal Rule: Nothing but good should ever come from your hands.

Swatting, squirting with a spray bottle, yanking, etc. just makes your dog afraid of your hands. What could go wrong? Everything.

Think to yourself, “How do I want this to feel?” Then find the straightest path between struggle and satisfaction!

Household cleaners can damage pets!

Amazing recipes for easy, and inexpensive, non-toxic cleaning products that are pet safe!

I have been making my own 'soft-scrub' and scrubbing bubbles for many years, and I love the additional suggestions for disinfectants, polishes and specialized cleaners. (TIP: Don't use vinegar, which is my go-to, on stone/marble/granite countertops!)

Even if you don't think commercial products can hurt your pets (they totally do), make these substitutes for your wallet's health and your own!

I wish blame wasn't a part of the deal, but I say this ALL THE TIME.

Every decade has had its devil dog because humans do so love to deflect responsibility.

No breed of dog is more responsible than any other for what we consider bad experiences.

When you get past the propaganda, the large breeds most likely to bite are Labs and Huskies. But over all? Dachshunds, Jack Russells and Chihuahuas.

Socializing with dogs you observe to be friendly is great for everyone. But it is too much to expect that every OTHER dog is going to enjoy your dog's energy.

Don't be offended by people who try to avoid your dog and do NOT impose on others who don't welcome the attention.

Help everyone enjoy their walk, both pups and people!
