For 15 years, Washington Parks & People has been growing the Columbia Heights Green as a place of community resilience, learning, art, and food for those most in need. Once a rubble-strewn vacant lot, the Green is now an inspiring year-round model of all that the land can mean for people and nature. This magic place has been cultivated for many years with love and dedication by Parks & People, doz
ens of our community partners, and hundreds of diverse volunteers. Soon to be re-dedicated with a Nature Sacred sanctuary, the site also features year-round agriculture and food forest, native perennials and pollinators, stage, pavilion, fire circle, healing and herb gardens, bee hive, restful green space, and a wonderful and very happy bird population. The little farm shed also serves as a sunlight and rainwater collector for the off-the grid site. The Green serves as a pesticide-free community farm, a job-training site for Parks & People's DC Green Corps, an outdoor classroom and field trip destination for area schools and youth groups, an arts and performance space, and a place of respite, reflection, and healing for all. Volunteers and partners are encouraged to contact Parks & People (www.washingtonparks.nett) about helping the Green serve those most in need.
