RESCUE RIDE - Welcome to Brookline big, handsome Hansel, a 7-year-old English purebred yellow male. Not only is Hansel gorgeous but he is also very sweet and well socialized. He rode beautifully in Deb's car. He would put his head on her shoulder as she drove. Hansel is great with kids of all ages and other dogs. He is with his foster, Jackie B. Stay tuned for his blog on our website once Jackie learns more about Hansel. We anticipate he is going to be a popular boy.

Change a Pet's Life Day is dedicated to enhancing the lives of pets. Here are some impactful ways to get involved:

• Adopting from a rescue provides animals a second chance and helps reduce overcrowding.
• Fostering gives temporary care to pets until they find permanent homes.
• Volunteering at a rescue can improve animals' lives through your time and skills.
• If time is limited, consider donating to a rescue to help cover basic needs.

Interested in making a difference? You can find information regarding adopting, fostering, volunteering, or donating on our website at brooklinelabrescue.org. Every action helps create a brighter future for pets in need.

Meet Charles! 🐾 This sweet 2-year-old boy loves other dogs, gets along with cats, and enjoys walks, playtime, and even helping with yoga! 🧘‍♂️ While he’s a little shy with new people, Charles is housebroken, crate trained, and eager to find a home where he can build his confidence. He’d do best with another dog and an active lifestyle. Charles was rescued after being abandoned with 5 other dogs in a Bucks County dog park, and now he’s thriving in his Brookline foster home. 🐕 Charles is available for adoption. You can learn more about him in his blog on our website at brooklinelabrescue.org/blog/charles-3-black-labrador-retriever-male-2-years-old-id3002/.

Reasons to Hug Your Pet on National Hug Day

Boosts Emotional Well-being: Pets provide unconditional love and companionship, which can significantly boost your emotional well-being. When you hug your pet, it triggers the release of oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone." This helps reduce anxiety and promotes a sense of calm and happiness.

Strengthens Your Bond: Engaging in affectionate gestures like hugging can strengthen the bond between you and your pet. It reinforces trust and security, making your pet feel more comfortable and connected to you.

Enhances Physical Health: Interacting with pets, including hugging them, can lead to improved physical health. Studies have shown that pet owners tend to have lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol levels, and a decreased risk of heart disease.

Provides Comfort and Support: Pets often serve as emotional support companions. Hugging them can provide comfort during times of stress or sadness, offering a warm, reassuring presence that helps alleviate feelings of loneliness.

Encourages Mindfulness and Presence: Spending time cuddling with your pet encourages you to be present in the moment. This mindfulness can help reduce stress and enhance your overall mental clarity and focus.

Remember, it’s important to consider your pet's preferences and comfort level with hugs. Some animals may prefer other forms of affection. Always ensure that your expressions of love are enjoyable and stress-free for your furry friend.

EVIE UPDATE:

Evie is home! We’re totally in love with this sweet girl, so we’re a foster fail. She has filled that huge empty spot left in our lives and hearts after losing our last lab. Many thanks to Maija for springing her from the farm, and to Katie for allowing us to foster Evie. We’re sure she will become a wonderful foster sister in the future.

SUCCESS SUNDAY - Marley (9-year-old yellow male) and Rigby (5-year-old yellow male)

What an incredible experience our family has had working with Brookline. Very shortly after submitting an application requesting a bonded pair and having a home visit, we were approved to foster or adopt.

Marley and Rigby were surrendered by their owner after having lived together their whole lives. Within a few days of them being in the shelter, Brookline was notified and a volunteer was able to conduct an evaluation of the dogs. As we all know, most shelters are overcrowded and this one was no different. Marley and Rigby were sleeping in the closed office, but because Marley is an expert locksmith, often the hallway. With the efficiency and care of the Brookline village, Marley and Rigby only spent a week in the shelter.

When our family picked them up, Rigby, our 5-year-old, was still bleeding from the neutering surgery. Everyone thought that was normal post-surgery, however, the bleeding didn’t stop. Long story short, Rigby needed urgent medical attention. Brookline supported us emotionally and tactically through the long 2-week hospital stay, answering calls and questions all day from us and the hospital staff. In the end, Rigby was diagnosed with a rare form of hemophilia and too many infections to name. He was in isolation nearly the full 2 weeks. Cornell and Penn were involved, medicines were overnighted, infusions were necessary. Rigby’s unique situation is now presented as case study.

Throughout the ordeal, Rigby’s tail kept wagging and he continued wiggling and eating… even gained weight. He is irresistible and hard not to “treat.” When Rigby was released, he continued to need continuous medical care from us and to rest in a confined space with no exercising for another 2 weeks.

During Rigby’s recovery, his brother, Marley, our 9-year-old, was cared for by another Brookline foster family to allow Rigby to rest. Rigby in his cone and me in my pajamas slept downstairs for two weeks on a mattress… and finally... he healed! The medical ordeal was nothing Brookline or we had experienced. My mentor was a rock for us, as were many, many, many other caring Brookline volunteers. We are beyond thankful.

Now for the good part; of course, we adopted them both! Marley and Rigby are home living the good life and we are completely obsessed with them. We take photos of them ALL day and soak up every bit of their companionship and joy. We LOVE seeing them play with their toys and each other (a bonus of a bonded pair). Every morning, they come down the stairs with me like it is Christmas morning. They have so much excitement for the “small” joys of life. Tennis balls, stuffed babies, belly rubs, butt scratches, kisses, car rides, rolling in the yard, cuddling up together, walks, and treats. They make every day special for us. Marley and Rigby are pure LOVE and such a gift. We are forever thankful for the organization and all the Brookline volunteers who guided us through the process.

PRINCESS UPDATE - There was so much interest in Princess, we wanted to let everyone following her know that her foster family decided she was the perfect addition to their family. While Princess will no longer be available for adoption, other great Labs are always finding their way into our Rescue. Below is the update from Peggy and Mary:

"Luuuucy....YOU'RE HOME!!" We are a two-dog family again as we "foster flunk" with Princess, now known as Lucy. 🥰 She is 5 years old and sweet as can be. She and Rubble get along well and I'm sure he will be a great big brother!

Sweet Evie got her Brookline goodie box yesterday - she was sooo happy and even a bit overwhelmed. She got really excited when she saw not one but two tennis balls in the box! She likes to carry a tennis ball on her walks. The real winner, though, was the Benebone. Although she didn’t quite know what to make of all the stuff, she figured out the box belonged to her and she has returned several times to get a few more goodies. Thank you to Taylor and Theresa for making our foster dogs feel special! And thank you to all of our followers who so generously donate items from our Amazon and Chewy.com wish lists to include in our foster dog welcome packages.

It's not too late to make a difference! Your contribution to our annual giving campaign will help Brookline Lab Rescue continue its mission in 2025—rehoming Labrador Retrievers, providing the veterinary care they need, and placing them in loving permanent homes. In 2024, our veterinary expenses exceeded $160,000. These costs reflect the life-saving treatments and care we provide to Labs that often have nowhere to turn. Your support ensures we won't have to turn any Labs away, as we are frequently their last hope for recovery and a happy future. You can make a donation:

1. Online: visit brooklinelabrescue.org/2024-annual-giving-campaign

2. By Check: Make your check payable to Brookline Lab Rescue and mail it to PO Box 638, Warrington, PA 18976-0638

Please help us reach more supporters by sharing this message with friends and family. Encourage others to join in our mission to give every Lab the care and love they deserve. Together, we can make a real impact in the lives of these wonderful dogs. Thank you for your generosity and kindness. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us save lives and provide hope to Labs in need.

Meet Biscuit! 🐾 This sweet, 11-month-old silver Lab is looking for her forever home. She’s full of energy and needs an active family who can keep up with her! Biscuit is food motivated and ready to learn with some training. Due to her energy, she should not be placed with kids under 12, and she requires a physical fence as she’s not a fan of invisible ones. While she currently lives with her littermate, Freedom, she doesn’t need another dog to be happy. Biscuit’s a fun-loving girl ready for her next adventure—could it be with you? 🐾💕🐾

Meet Tukker, a 9-year-old former service dog who is now available for adoption through Brookline. His owners could no longer utilize him in that fashion due to their health.

Tukker is a big boy who loves his outdoor time, be it taking in the smells and sights in the backyard or on a walk around the neighborhood. He loves to chew on his toys or a bone, and excels at tug with his rope toy. He is just as content hanging out on the couch near his people though. Yes, we do allow him on the furniture and in beds.

He follows basic commands, sit, shake, and down. He needs a little work on learning the stay and come commands.

Tukker needs a family that can spend time outside for daily walks. He loves to go for car rides with his people. We have taken him to auto dealerships, tractor supply, and more, and he loved being out and about.

Please check out his blog to learn more about Tukker brooklinelabrescue.org/blog/tukker-yellow-labrador-retriever-male-9-years-old-id-3495/.

Making a decision to give up a faithful friend is never easy, no matter the reasons. Before posting your dog on social media or bringing your dog to a shelter, please consider allowing our rescue to help you rehome your dog. Rehoming your dog through Brookline will give you peace of mind that you did the very best you could do for your dog, no matter why you had to say goodbye.

Since we evaluate all dogs before bringing them into our rescue, you will need to live within or near our coverage area, which you can view on our website at brooklinelabrescue.org/adopt/coverage-areas/. To begin the process, contact us and we’ll arrange to evaluate your dog at your home. Once your dog has been approved to be rehomed through our rescue, you will be able to review a report of the home visit done for any potential adopters and, with our guidance, help choose the best match for your Lab. After a match is made with an adoptive family, you will sign a contract that transfers ownership of the dog to our rescue. You will agree to take the dog back if the match doesn’t work during our required two-week pre-adoptive period. Assuming the match is a success, the adoption will be finalized with the new family signing an adoption agreement. A small donation is requested for placing a surrendered dog. Please visit our website for more details at brooklinelabrescue.org/surrender/surrender-faqs/.

RESCUE RIDE - Charlie is a beautiful spayed 5-year-old purebred chocolate female Lab who got her rescue ride today from the shelter. The staff at the shelter noted that she is friendly, playful, and confident; she is always happy and loves everything. She is good with men and women but is unknown with children. She is good with other dogs and was calm when she walked in the cat area of the shelter. Thanks to our new foster home, Lisa and Tom H., for opening their home and their hearts to foster. Charlie will need training and daily exercise in her foster home and we're looking forward to learning more about this beautiful girl. Welcome to Brookline, Charlie. Keep an eye on our website for her blog once her foster home learns more about her.

Meet Anne, a 5-year-old former breeder mom who is available for adoption. Anne is under 60 lbs., very sweet, beautiful, and loving. Anne loves to play with her dog friends but also enjoys snuggle time with her human friends. Anne walks well on lead. She does have a prey drive, so no cats please. Anne is mouthy and takes treat roughly. No little kids under 10 please. She can be rather pushy especially if food is involved. Anne needs a family that can continue her training. She also needs some help navigating stairs.

Check out Anne’s blog to learn more about her while in foster care: blog/anne-fox-red-labrador-retriever-female-5-years-old-id-3521/.

Our Story

Welcome to the Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue (BLRR) page! BLRR was started in 1997 with a single volunteer saving a single lab. Since then, the rescue has grown both in numbers and coverage area. We now have about 100 volunteers and we place an average of 100 dogs per year in their forever homes in our coverage area (many parts of southeastern and central PA, northern DE, and certain counties in central and southern NJ).

BLRR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer organization funded entirely by donations. Our volunteers work with shelters to evaluate dogs in danger of being euthanized because they are not finding homes through the shelter and room needs to be made for the unending flow of incoming dogs.

Our volunteers evaluate these dogs to the best of their ability to make sure that the dogs will make a great pet before we place them into one of our BLRR Foster Homes. Once approved to become a Brookline dog, the dogs are examined by a veterinarian, brought up-to-date (UTD) on vaccinations, and spayed or neutered, if needed. These dogs remain in the Foster Homes for a minimum of 2 weeks so the foster families can gain insight into the dogs' personalities and offer potential new families more information about the dogs' needs.

We also help people who can no longer care for their Labs by evaluating them using the same criteria as our shelter dogs. These dogs also must be UTD on vaccinations and must test heartworm negative and/or be on heartworm preventive. These dogs remain in their owners' homes until new homes can be found to meet their needs and personalities.
