Hey y'all! It's me, Heather, owner of Handful of Leashes 👋
A lot of dog trainers become trainers because they had a "bad" dog. The dog that made them question "Is it really supposed to be this hard?" 🥺
I had a different experience.
I became a dog trainer because I had a really great dog... until I didn't.
When I was 18 years old, our 4-year-old Australian Cattle Dog S'more (who was friendly, crate trained, & knew sit / down) got hit by a car... because she didn't have any recall 🏃♀️
When we got our next family pet Stitch (another aussie cattle dog), I couldn't let go of the traumatic experience of having a great dog for far too short of a time ⏳️
This sparked my desire for a much longer time with Stitch (and the training it would require to raise those odds of a long & healthy life) 🌄
I learned all I needed to learn about dog behavior & training tools (even went to Delval, a solely animal-field university, 2 years later).
One thing lead to another and grew to what it is today. I now work with clients each week doing private, training lessons in their homes - keeping their dogs from a similar fate as my old dog S'more.
While Stitch sadly passed of cancer 2 years ago, I have taken all I've learned from 10 years with her into my relationship with our newest girl Opal (pictured here in a perfect off-leash heel) ✨️
Every day I am so thankful for the hard lessons I've learned and the owners I get to help (so they don't have to learn the same lessons the hard way) 🌱
Is there anything else you'd like to know about my dog training journey?
