“In & Around Horse Country” 2026 Summer issue arrives in mailboxes and at newsstands this week. (Digital edition coming soon.) Cover shot by Douglas Lees.

As this summer marks the 250th anniversary of America declaring independence from Great Britain, J. Harris Anderson takes a look at the role horses played in the conflict that followed. From General Washington’s portrait-worthy “Blueskin” to scruffy mixed-breeds off the farm, Colonial equines played an essential role in besting the Brits.

Jumping ahead to modern times, Donna Martin of Blue Ridge Trailers provides a wealth of information on the best practices to keep your horse trailer safe for the road and well-maintained to assure a long and useful life.

Did someone say…racing? What a spring season for action on the turf, from Warrenton Hunt’s opening meet to the jampacked, big money Virginia Gold Cup. Betsy Burke Donley’s insider knowledge always provides a knowledgeable touch to the racing action and the horses and people who make it happen.

A sense of belonging to a community is scientifically recognized as an important component for a person’s overall well-being. Linda Taliaferro, CAE, Executive Director of the Masters of Foxhounds Association, lays this out in her article that details the benefits of joining together with like-minded individuals in group endeavors.

Fort Leavenworth Hunt in Kansas celebrated the centennial of its founding with a weekend of special events. Photographer Allison Howell was on hand to capture the action, which included a presentation of the history of the legendary Buffalo Soldiers, who were stationed at Fort Leavenworth beginning in the 1860s.

Hunt staff changes are afoot. This issue includes four of them in Part One. Others are brewing, not all finalized by press time, so look for Part Two in the next issue.

Brandy Greenwell reports on the Irish Draft Breeding Classes at the Upperville C**t & Horse Show. She stresses the importance of preserving this breed, popular among foxhunters.

Osmun readies himself for the summer season and so much more.

In all, a great issue.

UPDATE On the Virginia Fall Races:

The 71st annual Virginia Fall Races are October 11 at Glenwood Park in Middleburg. Eight races worth $275,000 include the $50,000 National Sporting Library timber stake, the $20,000 Kinross Steeplethon cross-country ’chase, and the Bryant memorial ratings handicap. The 3-year-old hurdle has been renamed the Will O’Keefe memorial.

The meet has run to benefit the INOVA Loudoun Hospital Foundation since 1955, along with the hosting Glenwood Park Trust that conserves the 112-acre park bequeathed to the community by the late Daniel Sands.

Glenwood Park is the oldest continuous racecourse in Virginia. Established in 1911, the 150-acre park is protected by conservation easement, legacy to former owner Daniel Sands.

Our feature story comes from half way around the world. Dr. Steven Thomas, MFH, flew from his home in Kansas all the way to New Zealand for an amazing hunting adventure. Now you can follow the action and enjoy the scenery through Steve’s account and photos. Back stateside, Betsy Burke Parker previews the NSA-sanctioned fall steeplechase meets. Darrell Wood shines the spotlight on a variety of individuals who help make Colonial Down one of the premier racing venues in the Mid-Atlantic region. Hounds aplenty are covered in five hound show reports held up and down the East Coast and out west to the Central States. Osmun recounts his fun-packed spring and summer accompanying Marion to a host of events and takes a look forward at their jam-packed fall itinerary. The youngest leadline contestants at the Upperville C**t & Horse show take center stage in a pictorial display. Allison Howell covered some serious mileage to provide words and photos on chasing coyotes in Montana and legging up hunt horses in North Carolina. Oliver Brown, MFH, remembers his good friend, the late Diana Dodge, a true doyenne of the horse world.

Retraction & Clarification
In our last issue, we mistakenly reported that Loudoun-Fairfax Huntsman Jeff Woodall was retiring or moving on. We are happy to report that Jeff is not hanging up his horn just yet! He remains under contract with the hunt for another season and is very much in the saddle.

Additionally, in March, Conor Poe has joined as professional first whipper-in under contract, rounding out a strong team in the field.

Our sincere apologies to Jeff for the mix-up—and our thanks for his good humor. We aim for accuracy, but every now and then, we take a wrong turn at the covert.

“In & Around Horse Country” 2025 Summer issue arrives in mailboxes and at newsstands this week. (Digital edition coming soon.)

This issue features a heap of helpful info along with entertaining features and thoughtful insights. Does your hunt’s bottom line need a boost? We present more than two dozen suggestions for fundraising ideas, from the tried-and-true to the truly innovative. Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab has updated their safety ratings on equestrian helmets. An editorial considers the gradual disappearance of the traditional hunt cap, now banned by an increasing number of hunts. Three long-serving huntsmen will join the ranks of those honored in the Huntsman’s Hall of Fame at the Museum of Hounds and Hunting. ’Tis the time for staff changes and we list the many moves for the coming season. Betsy Burke Parker brings you a recap of the action-packed spring races. Osmun ponders the significance of a dog’s name. Jenny Young has a full shelf of enticing books on horse-related topics plus the latest release from Rita Mae Brown. The VEA report announces the 2025 stakes schedule at Colonial Downs, Jill Byrne’s new role at the VTA, and Shenandoah Downs’ tenth anniversary. As always, the pages are filled with eye-catching images from our team of talented photographers. Everyone’s to-do list is filled with springtime chores. Lauren Giannini profiles show hunter “Living Legend” Patricia Heuckeroth. Patty’s path began with riding before she could walk. Her childhood was spent under the tutelage of her father Otto, who served as manager of Ox Ridge Hunt Club (Darien, CT) for 40 years and taught the likes of Victor Hugo-Vidal, Ronnie Mutch, and George Morris. With such a providential start in life, it’s no wonder Patty went on to amass a lifetime of awards and honors as she rose to fame in the show hunter world.
Looking for some tips on how to improve your hunt’s trail maintenance program? Check out our Q&A with Belle Meade Hunt’s senior master Epp Wilson. Epp’s father, a founding MFH of the Georgia hunt, established a culture of work that the entire membership embraces to this day. Their well-structured system was recently put to the test—successfully!—when their territory was hit by the forceful remnants of Hurricane Helene. Fire up those chain saws and let’s get to work!
Two hunts, both based in Ohio—Camargo and Rocky Fork Headley—celebrate their centennial anniversaries this year. Founded at the midpoint of the Roaring Twenties, each club owes its start to a wealthy benefactor. But it required dedication and fortitude on the part of many others who took up the torch—or, in this case, the horn—over the ensuing decades to assure the sport would continue for several generations to come. And will continue to do so!
Sadly, we note the passing of some leading lights in the horse world: show jumping legend Rodney Jenkins, beloved coach and mentor to many Paul Cronin, avid foxhunter and Horse County model Hally Woodbury, and horsewoman/philanthropist Rose Marie Bogley.
Marion tries to discern the intent behind Osmun’s unshakably focused behavior at what he considers even the slightest threat to their home and property. It’s a huge responsibility, but this loyal Scottie is up to the job!
Darrell Wood takes a look at the upcoming spring racing schedule and gives us the Virginia Equine Alliance report on other goings-on at Colonial Downs, Shenandoah Downs, and elsewhere in the Old Dominion.
Jenny Young has some suggestions for cozy reading on a late winter day as well as tips on exercises for both horse and rider as spring approaches and activities pick up.
And, as always, the pages are filled with eye-catching photos from around the country featuring eager foxhunters from youngsters to the young-at-heart.
Spring will soon be in the air. Get a head start on the upcoming activities with some advance reading!

Traveling photographer and foxhunter Allison Howell regales us with her accounts of action from the sweeping grasslands of Kansas to the high mountain country of Montana. Ohio was the scene for this year’s Junior Field Hunter Championships, hosted by Rocky Fork Headley Hunt and chronicled by Carla Babcock. The adults were not be outdone thanks to Amy McNeely’s coverage of the TAR Field Hunter Championship, Helen Brettell’s of the Orange County Hounds Team Chase, and a recap of the Virginia Field Hunter Championship. Betsy Burke Parker notes the highlights of the four NSA-sanctioned races in Virginia. The VEA report chronicles the racing action at Colonial Downs, looks ahead to exciting new developments for the 2025 season, and announces the opening of an expansive new gaming resort. Lauren Delaney, MFH, recounts how the venerable Potomac Hunt, perilously close to dissolution, revived itself and is now back to full hunting form in its storied territory. Two days of pouring September rain did not dampen the action as Dr. Steven Thomas, MFH, recounts at the season’s first performance trials, hosted by Andrew Bridge Foxhounds. Marion spins a haunting Halloween tale that leaves Osmun, home alone for the evening, spooking at shadows. And…photos! Accompanying all of the above plus Opening Meets from Vermont to Florida and multiple points in between, Old Dominion Hounds historic Centennial Hunt and Gala Ball, and more.

The weather hasn’t been kind to many parts of our hunting country—lack of rain in some places, hurricanes in others, unseasonably high temps. But the promise of more pleasant autumnal conditions is in the air. So enjoy our wrap up of these past few months and join us in looking forward to many more fun days ahead!

FYI lots of back issues on line, too.

“In & Around Horse Country” 2024 Fall Issue arrives in mailboxes and at newsstands this week. (Digital edition coming soon.)

It’s a hound-lovin’ issue! Foxhounds, beagles, and bassets galore! Betsy Smith got to wondering about how a hunt’s choice of hound breeds might have changed over time. And, if so, why and how was it handled. To answer those questions, she polled a selected sample of knowledgeable masters and huntsmen for their input. The responses are both interesting and illuminating. Hound shows were also a highlight of the season, with our coverage ranging from New England to the Central States then back to Virginia and up to Bryn Mawr. We give a nod to the Nantucket-Trewyren Beagles as they observe their 100th anniversary.

There’s plenty of horse stuff too! Karin Winegar profiles internationally known instructor Julie Ulrich whose new book, “Packing My Bags”, is a blend of autobiography, riding tips, and personal philosophy on the treatment of horses. Betsy Burke Parker gives us a preview of the upcoming fall steeplechase schedule. The VEA report tells of hot—literally and figuratively—action at Colonial Downs where Virginia-bred horses have been finishing in the big money. Jenny Young has assembled an extra-long list of books for late summer/early fall reading. Plenty of eye-catching images from our talented team of photographers enliven the pages. Osmun faces a weather-related decision and learns the meaning of “irony.”

Sadly, two passings are noted: Jeff Ketzler of the Dehner Boot Company and photographer Jim Meads whose extensive career chronicled the action of over 500 different hunts across North America, Great Britain, and France.

The crisp scent of autumn mornings will soon be in the air and sport, whether mounted or on foot, will resume to the delight of all. Get a head start on the coming season with our latest issue.
