Hello White Oak Stables family!

Many of you have been with us for years and know we pride ourselves on keeping our riding lessons as accessible and affordable as possible. However, rising inflation and cost of living have had a significant impact on our business in 2025, causing us to operate at a loss that I have been subsidizing through my 9-5 job income. In addition, the rising frequency and severity of storms have resulted in us needing more maintenance on our driveway. Therefore our lesson prices have been adjusted to reflect our rising operating costs.

What's the new lesson price?

$35 an hour per person. This is a $10 increase. Packages will remain at the same discount percentages.

What expenses does your lesson cover?

Even though you pay a one-time fee or purchase a package for a discount, it’s important to understand everything your lesson covers. So let’s break it down. Each lesson goes to the following expenses:

* Grain - 17 bags every 2 weeks
* Hay - about 2,000 bales a year
* Farrier - every six weeks plus special shoes for Abbott
* Vet bills - shots, coggins, dental care, body work
* Horse Supplies - halters, lead ropes, brushes, fly spray, crops, leather cleaner, etc
* Supplements - joint and arthritis medications
* Fencing - cutting back overgrowth, fixing gates, maintenance, and repairs
* Pasture care - w**d control, lyme, grass seed, and fertilizer
* Employing an additional riding instructor - we love Tobi and Ms. Jade can’t teach during the week
* Arena upkeep - buying or replacing jumps, flowers/decorations, jump poles, adding footing, fixing the “ditch”, and dragging
* Driveway - dragging and adding new stone
* Misc expenses - electricity, maintaining our well pump and auto-waterers, mud control, fly predators
* Farm insurance

When does the price increase take effect?

Our new price increase is effective immediately for any new lessons you book. Many of you have already booked lesson through most or a part of the summer so you won’t start paying the new price right away.

What if I can’t afford the price increase?

Please reach out to me if this price increase will negatively affect your family. I understand the rising costs have affected many people and I can offer some families a trade of cleaning the barn for lessons. Also, we have a diversity scholarship program returning this year that you can apply for. The scholarship provides free riding lessons to a few riders during the summer months. If you have questions please reach out to us.

Thank you all for understanding and supporting our lesson program. This was a super tough decision for me to make, but we wouldn’t be here without you!

Ms. Jade

We're still working to finalize 2026 summer camp dates, but the art projects are on their way. This year we'll have two fun STEM activities, try our hand at embroidering a tote bag, make some custom pens, diamond paint keychains, watercolor a bookmark, test out a new foil art, and make our tried and true charm bracelets.

You can find more information about our summer camps here: https://white-oak-stables.com/services/summer-camps/

What are you doing to encourage riders of color to join your lesson programs? Do you even care that they are severely underrepresented in our sport? What creative solutions have you found for increasing diversity in our sport?

We're a small lesson barn for riders of color and low income families. We break even and are considering converting to a non-profit. This doesn't seem to come up a lot in riding lesson groups so I wanted to post this for other lesson barns to share. Please feel free to comment your own.

Here are some ways I've found helpful to increasing diversity at my barn:

- Advertise in diverse spaces. Yard sale groups, boys and girls clubs, community youth groups for minorities, churches for minorities
- Flexible lesson schedules and times. Having specific days/times every week can be challenging for many families who work more irregular hours
- Discounts for buying more lessons at a time, this also allows larger families to afford lessons
- Providing helmets
- Riding boots/clothes exchange so when people don't have them or don't use them anymore someone else can take them
- Not requiring riding boots/pants/polos (strongly encouraged if they stick with it but pointless for families who just want to try it out or can only come a few times a year)
- Lessons in exchange for cleaning the barn
- Putting more advanced riders on green ponies/horses at no cost to the rider since they're doing me a favor getting the horse exercised or working on an issue the horse has in lessons
- Maintaining a friendly/non-judgemental atmosphere
- No micro aggressions
- No Confederate flags or racist decorations (this is a bigger issue that you might think)
- Listing riders of color on the front of my website and promotion materials. If people can't see themselves at your barn they won't believe it's safe for them to be there
- Providing free educational materials/worksheets to anyone who wants them. This is a great way to get clubs to the barn and introduce children to horses
- Discounted events for large clubs to try riding. They take turns on the horses similar to pony rides only they get brief instruction during that time.
- Word of mouth. I highly encourage my riders to recommend their friends and neighbors
- Marking your business as LGBTQ+ and POC friendly. You can do this on many business sites like Yelp and Google
