Did you know about America’s most decorated war horse? Sergeant Reckless, a small Mongolian mare, served with the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. She became legendary during the Battle of Outpost Vegas in 1953, a battle that saw more than a thousand American soldiers and twice as many Chinese soldiers killed in three days of fighting. In a single day, Reckless reportedly carried thousands of pounds of ammunition up steep hills under enemy fire, often making the dangerous trip alone after learning the route herself. She also carried wounded soldiers back down the mountain and became beloved by the Marines for her intelligence and calmness under pressure. Not only was she the only horse officially promoted to Sergeant, she was also awarded two Purple Hearts, a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation with bronze star, the National Defense Service Medal, a Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Korea Medal, a Navy Unit Commendation, and a Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. You can find a memorial statue to Sergeant Reckless here in Virginia at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico.
