Community Cat Coalition shares wise words!

Does Trap-Neuter-Return Reduce the Number of Community Cats?

4 Mistakes that Can Sabotage your TNR Efforts and Give TNR a Bad Name.

We received a flurry of comments recently stating that TNR doesn't work. Some of these comments came from people concerned about the effect of cats on wildlife. Others were from frustrated trappers who found that their TNR'd colony kept growing despite their efforts to get them all. Does TNR actually stop colony growth and reduce the number of community cats?

Yes, TNR works great in controlling the population of cats and stopping colony growth, but ONLY if done correctly. If you make one of these mistakes, your TNR project may fail. As a new trapper I made all 4 of these mistakes.

Nothing hijacks our emotions more than homeless kittens, so when I got a call about a nearby business with 5 cats and 3 kittens, I rushed out to get the kittens. I knew it was important to get the babies first so they could be socialized and adopted into homes. And to be honest, I was smitten with kittens. Saving the kittens was a lot more fun than getting the colony fixed. So, I decided to get the kittens socialized, fixed and into homes before I tackled the 5 adults in the colony.

You can guess what happened. By the time I got around to making appointments for the 5 adults in the colony, two of the cats had given birth and the colony was now larger than when I started. I now had 5 adults and 8 more kittens to trap. Prioritizing the kittens resulted in a larger TNR project.

I made appointments for the 5 remaining cats but soon discovered another flaw in my plan. The business owner had reported 5 adults, and I believed him. Big rookie mistake! There are nearly always more cats than reported. Once I started trapping, I discovered that there were actually 9 adult cats. Now I needed more appointments and there weren't any available appointments until the next month. While I waited, more kittens were born. :-/

After 6 weeks of trapping, I had fixed 32 cats, but I was still making mistakes! The colony was in a nearby town, so it was too far out of my way to feed every day. My solution was to go twice a week and leave a huge bin of dry food to last until the next visit. In addition to attracting unwanted raccoons, the surplus also brought in cats from nearby colonies and from a local neighborhood. The business wasn't happy and now there were more cats to trap.

This colony was eventually TNR'd. But the mistakes I made resulted in a much larger and more expensive project. Most experienced trappers know to avoid these mistakes by:

-Assessing the colony size BEFORE trapping. Wildlife cameras or WiFi cameras aimed at the feeding station can help with this.

-Checking nearby homes or businesses for additional cats.

-Prioritizing the timely TNR of ALL cats instead of focusing on the kittens. When possible, it is best to do the entire colony at once.

-Feeding responsibly by leaving out just enough food for meals. When there is too much food, you have increased the "carrying capacity" for your colony and will attract more cats and wildlife.

-Following up after the TNR project to make sure no newcomers have arrived. Tomcats can have large territories and may visit the feeding station intermittently, so it is easy to miss them while doing TNR. Colonies in some residential areas may also have a continuous influx of pet cats who are lost or abandoned.

TNR works beautifully when you avoid these 4 mistakes. It is wonderful to see a TNR'd colony thriving with a stable population. Smaller, stable populations are MORE likely to be accepted by the humans living and working nearby and LESS likely to be targeted by cat haters.

04/09/2025

Please help stop the Gassing of Michigan’s Canadian Geese! Natural Resources Committee Meeting is this Thursday, April 10th.

The Michigan DNR has plans this year to round up Canadian Geese from unwanted areas and GAS them. A slow, painful death – cruel, inhumane and unnecessary.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
1. Contact Key Officials on April 10th: Your voice is needed to stop the mass killing of these misunderstood birds. Tell them you oppose killing Canadian Geese. Reach out to the following officials:
o Governor Gretchen Whitmer
Email: Contact the Governor
Phone: (517) 335-7858
o Michigan DNR Director
Email: [email protected]
Phone: (517) 284-6367
o Michigan Natural Resources Committee
Email: [email protected]
Phone: (517) 373-2426 / (855) 347-8014
o Michigan DNR Natural Resources Commission (NRC) Board
Email: [email protected]
o DNR Wildlife Division – Sarah Thompson
Email: [email protected]
Phone: (517) 284-9453
o Local USDA Office
Email: [email protected]
Phone: (517) 318-3471
Find your local USDA contact: USDA Directory https://www.usda.gov/
o Your State Representative
Find your State Representative: Michigan Legislature https://www.legislature.mi.gov/

Why You Should Care:
1. Gassing Geese is Cruel: they endure 40 to 50 minutes of carbon dioxide inhalation, struggling to survive because they can hold their breath for long periods of time.

2. Lakefront Homeowners Shouldn’t Have Sole Control:
o Decisions on species management should involve the broader community, not just lakefront homeowners. Biodiversity is crucial for the ecosystem/ impacts everyone.

3. P**p is Not a Valid Reason to Cull:
o P**p shouldn’t be the reason for culling. Non-lethal methods can reduce goose populations without harm

4. Lack of Scientific Basis:
o There are no Michigan-specific studies supporting the need for culling geese or mute swans. Culling lacks scientific justification.

5. Humane, Non-Lethal Deterrents - A Combination Works Best:
1. Habitat modification/ landscaping
2. Hire companies that train dogs to chase geese before nesting
3. Feed contraceptives (Ovocontrol-G)
4. Consult with companies that train geese (Geesebusters)
5. Implement proper egg/ nest destruction (prevent hatching)
6. Visual/ auditory (ie: laser pointer, fence/string barrier, predator-like statue)
7. Use Tow & Collect for easy waste pickup
8. Use FlightTurf® (grass that deters geese/deer)
9. Apply Flock Free to lawn/areas of concern

6. Focus on Human Impact:
o Scientific studies show human activities like fertilizer runoff, leaking septic systems, storm water pollution, and boats pose a greater threat to Michigan’s waterways than geese or swans.

7. SIGN THE PETITION TODAY: https://chng.it/cYvHNWbcHL

Bird Flu & Flock Health:
1. Geese and Ducks Have Coexisted for Centuries: Mass culling is not an effective solution to preventing disease.
o Healthy Environments Build Immunity:SIGN THE PETITION: https://chng.it/cYvHNWbcHL Scientific studies show birds raised in a healthy environment with non-GMO grass develop better immune systems and can naturally fight off diseases like bird flu.
o Studies in the UK show feeding chickens fresh blades of grass strengthens their immunity and reduces the risk of disease.
2. Alternatives to Mass Euthanasia in Poultry Farms:
o The USDA offers financial compensation to poultry farms for killing entire flocks due to bird flu, but this is not necessary.
o Instead of culling birds, better isolation and biosecurity protocols should be implemented to prevent the spread of diseases.
o Breed for the desired trait of disease resistance/ strengthen the gene pool (ie: don’t cull all, only those that are sick)
o If the DNR/ USDA feel bird flu is a concern, why are feed stores still selling chicks/ ducklings? After purchase (realizing work involved/mess), many are released into the wild, potentially spreading disease.
3. Geese & Swans are Sentinel Species:
o As such their health/population changes can indicate issues with the health of our waterways and the broader environment.
o Protecting these species helps us better understand and address ecological imbalances and environmental degradation.
4. Geese as Scapegoats:
o Other bird species also carry bird flu. Why single out geese when the virus can be spread by many species?
5. Concerns During Culling:
o During the culling on Lake Sherwood, there were no visible precautions (e.g., masks or gloves), raising concerns about disease transmission.
o Discarding carcasses in landfills (current solution) can cause disease transmission

Additional Resources:
1. Beach Guard Spreadsheet:
o The EGLE website provides a "Beach Guard" spreadsheet, listing beach closures and their reasons, offering insights into local water quality issues: Beach Guard Spreadsheet. https://mienviro.michigan.gov/explorer/beach/map/results
2. Mitigation Goose Webinar Protect Our Geese, Protect Our Communities: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0xu7lssrTw
o Hosted by In Defense of Animals (IDA) on 3/6/25 discussed:
1. Humane deterrents/ products for goose management and how the combination of methods works best in mitigating goose activity.
2. Experts also addressed water quality concerns (with human activity being the largest contributor) and discussed how non-lethal methods can be both effective and humane.

Occasionally Trap Neuter Return turns into Trap Neuter Rethink Return. After getting fixed, "Helios" let everyone know he wasn’t happy about Return and preferred a different R word - Rehome.

Now Helios needs your help! This is his chance for a bright new future. One he really deserves and one you can help with. Right now he’s in a cage.

Please help find a foster home or adopter for him!

Helios is about 5 years old and FIV positive. Don’t let that scare you. This friendly sweetie can lead a healthy life with proper nutrition. Have other cats? No problem! The likelihood it would pass to another cat is negligible.

Please share Helios’ need. While you’re on Petfinder.com check out “Scout” at Pet Adoption Alternative of Warren too! He was set for TNR, but his super personality was caught early enough to move straight to adoption.

https://www.petfinder.com/cat/helios-kb-pecial-fee-fiv-75800546/mi/west-bloomfield/paaw-pet-adoption-alternative-warren-mi598/

If interested in either kitty, please contact Pet Adoption Alternative of Warren.

Thank you!

UPDATE 4/8/24: Bed & Biscuit Pet Lodging is completely amazing and taking this sweet girl in! She still needs a foster and or adopter.

Some more about Cocoa: 'She is a complete couch potato, all she wants to be happy is to lay on a couch with a blanket and watch tv. as long as she has that and food and water she is very self sufficient and enjoys just being lazy. Occasionally she will get the zoomies but it is short lived as she is 8 now and calms down quickly.'

URGENT-Help needed! Located in Metro Detroit. Desperate for a good outcome for Cocoa by Saturday, April 19, 2025. CAN YOU HELP? Domestic abuse victim is looking for placement for Cocoa. She’d love to be able to take her back someday, but has no idea when that might ever be.

Cocoa is spayed, 8 years old, friendly, house trained, well behaved. Total house dog. About 86 lbs. Never been around cats. Dog selective. Please see more about Cocoa:

“I have posted her on every facebook and online group I can find. I have called other rescues and they are full. Even shelters are turning me away for being full.

My dog is 8 years old, she is a pitbull. House trained, potty trained, microchipped, well behaved. She is good with older kids, she even doesn't bother my newborn son.

She is dog selective, so some she does good with (mostly male dogs for some reason) and others she doesn't get along with. She has no health issues, has never really been sick her whole life. I have had her since she was 6 weeks old, she is my best friend.”

CAN YOU HELP COCOA? Please don’t post here. Instead, please CONTACT US at [email protected].

Thank you for sharing!
