So many pets go missing this time of year because of fireworks. It's not too late to make sure your pet has ID tags with current up-to-date contact information. Double check their microchip contact information too. List an emergency contact if you haven't done so before.

Please keep them inside and leash walk any pet needing outside to potty.

Helpful information from Eastpointe Police Animal Control Division to keep your pet safe! Great tips for everyone, along with some FYI's for residents in Macomb County.

🎆 Emergency preparedness for pets 🎆
With fireworks comes scared pets! Accidents happen. We ALL know this. But Animal Control Agencies DO NOT WANT OR NEED YOUR PETS in their care! So do YOUR BEST to KEEP your PETS AT HOME.

🫶We are still offering FREE MICROCHIP WITH REGISTRATION for Eastpointe residents! Take advantage of this opportunity!

🐾You have a fenced yard - still walk them on a leash until the firework season is done. Do not leave them unattended. 🐾 If you are going to leave them unattended in your fenced yard , please check the gates before you let them out. Use bungee cords to reinforce the gate being shut. Added protection doesn't hurt, but not adding it might!

🐾Don't have a tag with info on it - get some tape as seen in the picture here.

🐾Your pets do not want to be outside with you during the fireworks either - keep them inside!

🐾Having a party - for their life's sake, put them in a room where no one will go in! Put a note on the door "Dog/Cat inside, Do Not Open". Turn on the TV or radio on for them to drown out the noise.

⚠️ In the event your pet is missing ⚠️
✅️Eastpointe residents, should you be separated from your pet OR found a pet, please email your information, the pets' information, and photos of your pet to [email protected].

💥IF you do not live in the Macomb County area , please call contact your local animal control/Humane Society/rescue.

Fireworks are beautiful! But, there's an ugly side to fireworks. Don't let your pet go missing.

Please, if your pets don't already have ID tags on their collar or the information isn't current - go buy a collar tag today.

Most pet stores like PetSmart and Petco have tag machines onsite. You can be in and out with a new ID tag in 15 mins😃

If your pet isn't microchipped yet, you can have that done at any veterinary clinic or during our walk-in wellness hours: https://allaboutanimalsrescue.org/veterinary-services/wellness-hours/

Already chipped? Fireworks are the perfect prompt to confirm your contact information is up to date - and correct. If you don't know who your pet is registered with or if it's even registered, you can use the AAHA microchip lookup tool. It will tell you which registry the chip is associated with and the chip brand: https://www.aaha.org/for-veterinary-professionals/microchip-search/

Don't know your pet's chip number? Any veterinary clinic will scan your pet for free or you can call the clinic where your pet was chipped. The chip should be on record. Reminder most vet clinics are closed during the holiday.

UPDATE 2: Thank you to everyone who came out to the City of Saint Clair Shores tonight to speak with the council. We are so grateful to you and to everyone who reiterated the damage and folly of relocation and placing unnecessary barriers to TNR.

Some takeaways. Council interest in requiring TNR permits, city inspections of properties and such as stated in the agenda background brief are in response to residents’ complaints about one unmanaged colony. The city’s response to this situation through the years is an area of opportunity in learning how to help a resident overcome their barriers to TNR. In this case a senior citizen who really needed caring guidance, education and the physical help in trapping and transporting. This is an ongoing situation that we hope resolves with the rest of the cats getting fixed and welcomed to live out their lives in the only ‘home’ they’ve known. Shout out to Pet Adoption Alternative of Warren, The KG Foundation and 4 Paws 1 Heart volunteers for helping this compassionate senior citizen.

The council is pro humane solutions and open to education from TNR experts and the Animal Welfare Commission in developing their next steps.

The council will be expanding the number of members that can be on the Saint Clair Shores Animal Welfare Commission. Residents are invited to apply on the city website. The commission focuses on all animals within the city; domestic and wildlife. If you are the type who loves research and education and will champion humane care of animals and the people who love them, we encourage you to apply and make a real difference in the Animal Welfare Commission 2.0.

The council is considering helping trappers subsidize sterilization.

There seemed to be confusion to some on what TNR is. Forgetting that sterilization has to be a part of it, or it’s not TNR. TNR = no kittens.

As of yet, there is no clear idea on what the city now thinks about permits, city inspections and relocation of cats in colonies they deem to big. But we are optimistic that education, guidance and respect for life will win out and look forward to being part of next step conversations.

All too often cities only hear from residents when they are angry. If you are a Saint Clair Shores resident with a managed colony or a neighbor of one and would like to express thanks for the city allowing TNR, please contact them so they know Trap NEUTER Return support is appreciated.

Thank you!

UPDATE: All About Animals Rescue's response to Saint Clair Shores Council Member, Linda Bertges’ post on the St. Clair Shores Michigan Residents Group page:

Thank you for looking to enlighten us that you are focused on improving the program. As part of that there should be transparency on what the City of Saint Clair Shores believes is improvement. It may not coincide with what experts know.

We are happy to put you in touch with national experts and work alongside Saint Clair Shores to determine what makes an effective program.

Behind closed doors, the Saint Clair Shores City Manager, Assistant City Manager, City Development and Inspection Director, and Code Enforcement Supervisor have been positively advocating for relocation and changing the ordinance to limit the amount of cats allowed in a colony.

Relocation should always be a last resort, only performed because death is imminent otherwise. Cats are territorial and do not do well with relocation. Many disappear to fates unknown.

As to limiting the number of cats that can be in one colony, “caretakers” don’t choose the numbers. Cats show up and should be fixed if they’re not already. Cats are usually fed by more than one feeder who all think they’re the only feeder. The number of cats in a colony is artificial as they can be counted among many colonies.

The key to Trap Neuter Return is the Neuter part. All cats need fixed. Otherwise it is not TNR.

Can you please be transparent before the meeting on:
The exact requirements for TNR permits
The definition of “standards of care for cats in our community”
Detail the “best practice guidelines set by the Animal Welfare committee” that residents would be held to
The cost of permits and any enforcement measures
Whether relocation or euthanasia are being considered to “manage the size of colonies”
How property inspections will work and what criteria will be used/required

Currently taxes do not pay for any part of getting cats fixed. But that is something to consider in aiding the program. This is left to the residents and rescues. The Macomb County Animal Control and Humane Society of Macomb County vouchers are not from taxes and only allow for a small number of vouchers to be issued.

Original from Council Member Linda Wenzel Bertges:
Dear Residents,
It has come to our attention that there are rumors circulating on social media regarding the topic of tonight’s City Council study session. I want to be very clear that tonight’s meeting is not about exterminating cats, nor is it about abolishing the TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program. This meeting is specifically focused on strengthening our TNR practices and ensuring that we are following the most humane and effective best practices for managing our community cat population. TNR is a compassionate and responsible approach, and our goal is to support and improve it—not eliminate it.
Thank you for helping us put a stop to misinformation. I look forward to a productive and informed discussion tonight.

Please share with your SCS friends and groups: DO YOU LIVE IN SAINT CLAIR SHORES? It’s come to our attention that the City of St. Clair Shores is having a meeting with TRAP NEUTER RETURN on the agenda this Monday, June 30th at 6 pm at City Hall: 27600 Jefferson Ave, St. Clair Shores, MI 48081. - Agenda and background brief at end of this post. -

If you support Trap Neuter Return and don’t want to see changes that may impose additional limitations on effective and humane population control and colony management, and/or may require relocation should a colony be deemed too large, PLEASE come to the meeting (attendance does not require residency) and/or contact the City Council members to let them know:

A) YOU SUPPORT HUMANE TRAP NEUTER RETURN AND HUMANE COLONY CARE

B) YOU ARE REQUESTING TRANSPARENCY ON:
The exact requirements for TNR permits
The definition of “standards of care for cats in our community”
Detail the “best practice guidelines set by the Animal Welfare committee” that residents would be held to
The cost of permits and any enforcement measures
Whether relocation or euthanasia are being considered to “manage the size of colonies”
How property inspections will work and what criteria will be used/required

In All About Animals Rescue’s long history of TNR, we have seen that people in Saint Clair Shores are not against fixing the cats, but some may need physical help and financial help to do so. Some residents may just need TNR education and guidance. Many senior citizens in Saint Clair Shores find themselves in need of extra help.

Saint Clair Shores residents, please contact your city council members before 6 pm, June 30, 2025 and or attend the meeting. Thank you in advance!

Agenda “Background Brief” submitted by Council Member Chris Vitale: “Updating the TNR program to require permits and standards of care for cats in our community. This would include inspections of properties that are part of the TNR program. This proposed change would help manage the size of the colonies as well as make sure the cats are getting neutered and are not overgrowing the neighborhood. If a TNR permit holder is not following the best practice guidelines set by the Animal Welfare committee, then their TNR permit will be withdrawn, and all outstanding issues will be handled by the ordinance officer.”

06/27/2025

WHY are animal cruelty cases so ignored, mishandled and in the event charges are ever brought, ramifications are minimal? Animal abuse is a serious red flag of the abuser going on to abuse people. Besides animal abuse being a heinous act, this is a public safety factor.

Michigan’s sentencing guidelines treat felony animal cruelty as a more of a property crime, with first-time offenders avoiding jail altogether.

Today, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced no charges will be filed in the case of Gideon, a puppy who suffered horrific third-degree burns earlier this year in Detroit because they can’t identify which person in the home is responsible.

Yet, if this had happened to a child or adult, investigators would leave no stone unturned until someone was held accountable!

Why? Because human victims have voices and communities demand answers.

It is time that animals get the same justice. We must stand up and be the voice for animals.

It now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration. Stay tuned. Your voice will be needed again!
