Cindy Valoura - Cross Equine Consulting, LLC Natural Hoof Care by Cindy Valoura I can help you and your horse transition to barefoot or maintain an optimum barefoot lifestyle through the Natural Trim. Cindy

Not all barefoot trims are the same and some are downright harmful. The "Natural Trim" is a barefoot trim method that mimics the hoof wear patterns of U.S. Great Basin wild horses. It is non-invasive and encourages the hoof to develop in a way that will provide the best shape, support and structure for the individual horse. Shoeing does not allow for such hoof development which can lead to problem

s for the hoof and the horse. The wild horse hoof is a strong, healthy model of what a hoof should be and it has much to teach us about the care of domestic hooves. It is fascinating to see a hoof transform following de-shoeing and a regular cycle of natural trimming. The horse begins grows the right hoof for his body and can feel his feet in a very different way. Questions? Contact me by phone, email or through Facebook!

Today I was wearing my work shirt that says, Natural Hoof Care, and an older man asked if I was a farrier. I told him I was a barefoot trimmer and he replied, “So, if I asked you to nail a shoe on my horse you wouldn’t?” I said, “No and I wouldn’t want to but I do take shoes off.” I then explained in a couple sentences what I do.

The man declared that he is from Kentucky and in the horse racing business and has never heard of a barefoot trimmer and that is doesn’t exist there. His tone was turning combative. It was so odd. I smiled and said that there are barefoot trimmers all over the world. He refused to believe this because, “If it isn’t in Kentucky, the horse capital of the world, it isn’t a thing!”

The man wasn’t taking issue with my 15 year profession he was telling me it didn’t exist. I’m not sure how I have paid my bills all these years if that is the case. 😂
Oh Kentucky.

Today at the office…
Would you believe a few years ago Beau would not let me catch him at first? We had a rest together before his trim this morning. Horses won’t stay lying down if they don’t trust you. He’s a sweet guy ❤️

🐎 Traditional domestic horse care practices often distances these animals from their evolutionary design. Genuine natural horse care is about bringing them back closer to what they were built for — physically, mentally, and emotionally/socially. When you see your happy horse on track, you’ll never go back!

If you are new to the concept of species-appropriate natural horse care, explore the Articles section of the AANHCP website and wait for the epiphanies! 😅

Some photographs are beautiful for many reasons. In the doorway of this barn is Penny the goat whose hooves I trim. Penny is a “meat goat” meaning she was destined to be slaughtered. She was also born with a deformed nub of a hoof on her back leg. Fortunately Penny was rescued by the wonderful Janet and Ted Roberts and lives a happy life with other goats and her pig friend, Golly. Interestingly we have discovered that Penny does best and is most relaxed when trimmed with a Milwaukee Mini Die Grinder power tool. It has made her trims a pleasure for all!

Enjoy the peaceful image of a sweet furry life spared by kind humans.

Older horses sometimes prefer using my foot to rest on rather than a hoof stand. The goat was there for moral support 🤷🏼‍♀️😊

Today at the office with sweet George, an older fellow I’ve trimmed for four or five years now. It was a cold day with snow cover and I hike out to his backyard home carrying my basic supplies. The quiet time with him, the goats and chickens is so peaceful. I’ll post a video separately.

The absence of grass - like this image - is what so much of the terrain in their natural / adaptive habitat looks like!

We don’t sell dirt, rocks or hay! 😂 If most domestic grass pastures were good for horses, we would promote that as a path to good health. Unfortunately, the opposite is true. Of course, they do need access to safe forage at all hours of the day just as they have in their natural habitat.

Photos from one of today’s trims - This was a setup trim meaning it was the first trim I have done on this horse. She had a lot of overgrown hoof wall and bar as well as compacted sole material that was likely left in but should have been removed during previous trims. Underneath it all were pretty nice hooves. Thankfully she was a perfect “Lady” for her trim and for that I’m grateful 😊
