Jimmy! Aka- Slim Jim. Jimmy went through a sale pen with a mixed lot of elderly animals after their owner died. We were able to take in Jimmy and anticipated giving him his last years in peace. With little to no teeth left he was unable to eat hay. So he had to be on complete and senior feeds. Unexpectedly we had a woman reach out who just needed a pasture mate for her horse. Jimmy spent three years with her and then was returned to us in February. It’s extremely hard for older horses to go through big moves. Jimmy mourned for his lost friends and went on a hunger strike. After over a month he decided we weren’t actually trying to poison him after spending HUNDREDS of dollars in assorted senior feeds and forage feeds. Now he burns through 100lbs of feed every 4 days. He is also on anti inflammatory meds for his achy old bones. We are unsure of his age. He is estimated to be around 1000 years old. 😅 He spends his days slamming his feed bucket around his stall if his grain isn’t mixed absolutely perfect. And aggressively pawing the stall door if you’re late at all with a fresh grain bucket, the horses are moving around too much, there’s too much activity, etc……He gets turned out with two older mares and thinks he’s a master of his domain. When he was first returned to us we talked about giving him one last great summer and laying him to rest before winter. He doesn’t like being in a stall all the time and he refuses to eat any soaked feeds. He coughs when he eats his dry feeds. But of course with daily anti inflammatory meds he’s running around bucking like he’s ready for ten more years. But he does come in stiff and sore some days and it takes a few tries to get up after a roll. So we will continue to spoil him rotten and juggle the daily game you are forced to play with senior animals. Looking for any signs of the end nearing. Trying to make the decision before the bad days. And in the meantime, watch him throw expensive feed around in his spoiled old man fits 😅
