Compassionate Animal Rescue Efforts of Dutchess County - CARE of DC

Compassionate Animal Rescue Efforts of Dutchess County - CARE of DC CARE of DC is a "No Kill" organization. We take in animals that are "at risk" and try to find forever homes for them.

CARE of DC is a "No Kill", non profit organization. Our goal is to save as many animals from euthanasia as possible. We take our animals from high kill shelters and work to rehabilitate them and find forever homes. Our organization works closely with other rescues and shelters that share in our values. We have developed a strong network of "no kill" partners and we assist them on a regular basis.

We take in corporate donations, warehouse them and then work to distribute the donated food and supplies to our partners in need.

Meet Logan — a long-legged, big-eared goofball with a heart of gold. 🐾✨

From the moment you meet him, you’ll understand why everyone says the same thing: “He’s SO sweet… and look at that face!”

Here is a message from Logan’s foster family 🥰:

Logan is the total package: dog- and cat-friendly, playful, smart as a whip, and loves people. He’s currently mastering his recall (treats help — he’s very food motivated!) and learning that the world isn’t such a scary place after all. In just two weeks with us, he’s gone from shy and unsure to joyful and curious. It’s been an amazing transformation to watch.

He loves running through open fields, chewing on sticks, and chasing them down like it’s his job. After all that play, he’s happy to relax nearby or gently lean into you for pets — his quiet way of saying “I trust you.”

Crate trained, enjoys car rides, and always up for an adventure, Logan would thrive in an active home — bonus points if you have a fenced yard or enjoy hiking trails.

If you're looking for a loyal buddy to laugh with, explore with, and snuggle up next to, Logan just might be your guy. Ready to meet your new best friend? Logan is waiting! 💛 🐕

Meet Rudy 💙🐾
He is around 4 years old and weighs 15 pounds, Rudy is a gentle soul looking for a second chance.

He was recently surrendered due to his previous owners health circumstances and they could no longer care for him properly.

This little guy may be shy at first and needs his space respected when meeting new people, after all his whole world has been turned upside down 😕But once he feels safe? He’s all cuddles. Rudy absolutely loves to be held and will happily claim your lap as his new favorite place!
He is on the calmer side but does like to go for daily walks or run around in the yard to get some energy out.

Rudy can be selective with other dogs, so we recommend either a pet-free home or a meet-and-greet here at the shelter to see if it’s a match. He hasn’t been tested with cats yet. As for breed? We’re just guessing—but maybe some kind of Papillon/Chihuahua mix? Whatever he is, he’s 100% adorable.

If you’re patient, kind, and looking for a loyal little sidekick, Rudy might be your guy. 🐶💛

Please visit our website CAREOfDC.org to submit an adoption application if Rudy sounds like a good fit, he’s here at the shelter waiting to meet you!!👋

TEDDY UPDATE 🐾

Teddy is still doing fantastic in his foster home, but he is hoping to find his forever home soon! 🤞🏼

Teddy is very smart and knows basic commands, is e-collar trained, walks well on a leash, does well with other well balanced dogs, as is a LOVE 🥰

We are looking for a great owner to continue his training and provide him with structure and routine. We also are asking for a home with no young children. 🩷

⚠️ He also comes with FREE training for life with expert trainers at Upstate Canine Academy 🤩⚠️

Please share this post to help it reach Ted’s forever family 🙏🏼

Shoutout to our incredible volunteer dog walkers who showed up in the POURING rain tonight! 🙏🏼

Soaked to the bone but still smiling, your dedication means the world to us—and to the dogs who got their walks, rain or shine.

Thank you for showing up no matter what! ☔️

Poe Poe and Holly lost everything when their owner passed away😔

Now, at 10 and 15 years old, they’re huddled together in a noisy shelter, wondering where their person went…

They watch younger dogs leave while they’re passed by—every single day 💔

If you’ve ever loved a dog, imagine them ending up like this. Alone. Confused. Waiting.
Their owner would’ve wanted them safe, and loved. Not spending their final years in a shelter.

We are asking for someone to open their heart. Give them a home. Let them feel love again 🙏🏼

💛 If you can’t adopt, please consider fostering! Holly & Poe Poe are a bonded pair meaning we want them to stay together. Their adoption fee has been sponsored. 💛

🐶✨ ELEVEN Reasons to Fall in Love! ✨🐶

These little guys are about 2 months old and cute enough to make you forget every single plan you had this weekend.

We think they’re Australian Cattle Dog mixes, which means they’ll likely be medium-sized once fully grown and have plenty of energy to keep you on your toes. These pups are smart, active, and already showing off their playful personalities.
These are pups who’ll want to run, learn, explore, and be part of your everyday life.

✅ Approved applications required to adopt! Visit careofdc.org to submit yours now!

Late Thursday night, CARE of DC received an urgent call from Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) (ACC) — over 80 dogs had just been pulled from a horrific hoarding situation in Brooklyn, NY. We realized that the only way to make a real impact was to reach out to our friends at Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary (HVARS). They immediately agreed to help! These dogs were found living in truly unimaginable conditions: crammed into filth, severely neglected, many covered in f***s, urine, and painfully matted fur. Some were so weak they could barely stand. Among them were everything from fragile newborn puppies to extremely elderly seniors.

Within hours, two rescue organizations came together to accomplish something incredible. Both HVARS and CARE of DC committed to taking in 40 of these dogs together — a massive undertaking that will require weeks, even months, of medical treatment, rehabilitation, and resources.

Since the first van load arrived Friday afternoon from NYC’s Animal Care Centers (ACC), it has been nonstop. Our teams have been working around the clock to stabilize these dogs — providing urgent veterinary care and medically necessary grooming to ease years of suffering and neglect.

Some dogs were so severely matted they were having trouble breathing. As we shaved away pounds of f***s-caked fur, you could see the physical relief wash over them. Many were so matted that until shaved, we couldn’t even determine their gender.

We absolutely couldn’t have done this alone. Pampered Pooch stepped up without hesitation — grooming and bathing dozens of dogs. Not only did Rachel help us until midnight on Friday night, her and her team spent their Saturday night working hard to get everyone feeling so much better.

This case is a heartbreaking reminder that animal hoarding is a serious mental illness, and the animals caught in it suffer in silence. The individual involved likely thought she was helping — that she was saving these dogs — until it spiraled far beyond her control. People who hoard animals often don’t intend to cause harm, but love without resources, space, or medical care becomes neglect. In this case, the animals paid the ultimate price. These dogs lived like this for years — trapped in filth, fear, and pain, hidden behind closed doors.

That’s why it’s so important to speak up. If something feels wrong, it probably is. If you see something, say something. These animals don’t have a voice — but we do. It’s up to all of us to be their advocates, to shine a light in the dark, and to speak for the voiceless before it’s too late.

This rescue is a shining example of what’s possible when animal welfare groups come together. It truly takes a village in the rescue world — and we’re proud to be part of one that shows up when it matters most.

We’re just at the beginning of this journey. These dogs have a long road to recovery — but now, they’re safe. They’re loved. And for the first time, they have a future.

Please follow their stories. Consider donating, fostering, or volunteering — and help us give these resilient souls the second chance they’ve always deserved.

For many in that home, we were too late. But for the several dozen we were able to save — along with those rescued by other dedicated local organizations — this is the first day of the rest of their lives. After years of suffering, they are finally safe. They are finally seen. And they are now the lucky ones.

Together, we are the village — and together, we save lives. ❤️🐾

Attached are photos of a handful of the dogs we were able to help.
