🚩This week alone I’ve gotten 3 messages asking me to take FIV+ cats bc the person who is caring for them was told they needed to live as an only cat or with other FIV+ cats. What year are we in?⁉️
Let’s talk about FIV+! So many people are misinformed about what exactly FIV means, and it just scares them off. Sadly, many vets are NO help in the matter!! FIV+ and FIV- cats can happily and healthily live together in perfect harmony. (We have both FIV+ and - cats at the cafe as proof!) I feel like a broken record but that’s ok, bear with me 😆
One of the most damaging myths about FIV positive cats is that saliva can transfer the virus and therefore sharing the same bowls and licking each other can cause the virus to pass from cat to cat. BUT the virus stays deep inside the cats gums, so it’s really mainly passed thru DEEP bite wounds which normally occurs from aggressive fights. In our experience the majority of FIV+ cats are actually the sweetest cats we’ve ever met!!
The take home message here is that FIV cats can live long fulfilling lives with other FIV cats and negative FIV cats! Don’t discount a cat just because of their diagnosis. This message has been brought to you by Clancy (2 years) and his baby buddy Tito (6 months).
The best part about this is that people are so scared that FIV+ will get sick all the time, meanwhile Clancy hasn’t sneezed ONCE despite being surrounded by this daycare of germ infected kittens! He’s the healthiest one here!!
