This week is canine bite prevention week. The first step to avoid aggression is to begin with puppy socialization.
Socialization should begin during the first 3-14 weeks of age. Providing positive experiences on a regular basis will help your new puppy to adapt to new experiences without fear or aggression.
Be sure to follow the dog’s lead and allow them to withdraw from the situation if they are uncomfortable. Every dog is different, so moving at their pace is important. Make sure to use positive reinforcement with praise, love, and treats. Reward your pup for calm and playful responses.
Well-managed puppy classes are a great way to socialize. Puppies that have not been fully vaccinated should not be exposed to animals of unknown vaccine status or potentially contaminated areas such as dog parks.
