Memorial Day weekend is the biggest plant-buying weekend of the year in America. If you have dogs, this list needs to go in your pocket before you visit the garden centre.

The most dangerous commonly planted garden plants for dogs:

Sago Palm — the most acutely toxic garden plant for dogs in the USA. All parts are poisonous and even small ingested quantities can cause irreversible liver failure. Found at garden centres across the southern states.

Azalea and Rhododendron — among the most widely planted ornamental shrubs in America. Grayanotoxins affect the heart and nervous system. Symptoms appear within hours of ingestion.

Foxglove — the cardiac glycosides in foxglove are the same compounds used in heart medication. The therapeutic window is narrow. Toxic to dogs in quantities easily available from a garden plant.

Autumn Crocus — distinct from the harmless spring crocus. The autumn-flowering variety contains colchicine, which causes multi-organ damage.

Safe substitutes exist for every toxic plant — roses replace azaleas, marigolds replace autumn crocus, snapdragons replace foxglove in the border.
