Did You Know? 🌾🐶

Foxtails may look like harmless grass, but they can be dangerous for dogs! Here are some fascinating (and alarming) facts about these pesky plants:

🔸 Designed to Travel – Foxtails have barbed seed heads that easily attach to fur, clothing, and even skin. Once embedded, they keep moving forward and never come out on their own.

🔸 Hidden Dangers – These tiny seeds can burrow into a dog’s ears, nose, eyes, paws, and even internal organs, causing serious infections or worse.

🔸 No Season is Safe – While foxtails are most common in summer and fall, dried seeds can linger year-round in warm climates.

🔸 Vet Bills Can Skyrocket – A single foxtail lodged in the wrong place can lead to costly surgeries. Prevention is always better than treatment!

🔸 They’re Everywhere! – Found across North America, especially in dry grassy areas, trails, parks, and even your own backyard.

Protect your pup from foxtails with the OutFox® Field Guard—because their safety is our priority! 🐾💛

Testimonial Tuesday 🐕❤🙏

When we read stories like this, it reinforces why we feel so strongly about our purpose and our product. It hurts our heart when we hear a dog died and that it could have been prevented. Conversely, our heart warms when we hear that a dog survives a harrowing event and can use the OutFox Field Guard to prevent future issues. Thank you for sharing, Kathy ❤️

This is going to be a long post about the great then worrisome weekend at Silver Bay KC Del Mar Fairgrounds.
My young dog Tommy was entered in rally and started acting very strange on Saturday morning. I went into my first class and he was almost disoriented. I pulled him from the rest of the day and watched him …he laid down, was lethargic, very glassy eyed and drooling.
Long story short he spent a day the vets office. His x-ray showed that the gut motility had completely stopped likely because of whatever he had ingested. We will never know exactly what it was, but the vet tends to think that it was either some kind of ma*****na (gummy) or possibly some kind of op**te. There is no place to take your dogs there to the bathroom except in the bushes.I am very careful and watch them like a hawk, but that doesn’t mean they can’t grab something while they’re sniffing and swallow it quickly. Fortunately, there was no long-term damage to his liver or kidneys, and after we got things moving, he cleared his entire bowel out of any leftover toxins. He is once again bright eyed and bushy tailed. I’m feeding him very carefully small meals because his digestion was so compromised. He said he was fine to take to the shows this weekend….Just make sure that he feels good.
At home and on walks I use an OutFox Field Guard mask on my dogs. They are created to keep FoxTails out of the face and ears, but I use them so that the dogs do not pick up anything and ingest something they shouldn’t…. now they will be on at the dog show. There is a friend at our hunting group that lost his golden several weeks ago from him eating coyote s**t that had sago palm seeds in it. It was devastating💔 please be ever vigilant. I know I’m going to even be more so!

🚨 Why Are Foxtails So Dangerous for Dogs? 🚨

If you’re a dog owner, you NEED to know about foxtails — a hidden outdoor danger that can cause serious harm to your pup.

🌾 What Are Foxtails?
Foxtails are grass-like weeds with sharp, barbed seed heads that easily break off and latch onto dogs' fur, paws, ears, eyes, nose — even under the skin! 😳

⚠️ Why Are They So Dangerous?
👉 They don't stop moving. Once attached, foxtails burrow deeper into your dog's body.
👉 They can cause serious infections or abscesses if not removed.
👉 In severe cases, they can puncture organs or travel through the bloodstream.
👉 Emergency surgery may be required if a foxtail goes undetected.

💡 Signs Your Dog May Have a Foxtail:
🐶 Excessive licking or biting paws
🐶 Head shaking or scratching ears
🐶 Sudden swelling or limping
🐶 Difficulty breathing (if inhaled)

🔒 How to Protect Your Dog:
✔️ Avoid tall grassy areas during foxtail season.
✔️ Always check your dog’s paws, ears, and body after outdoor adventures.
✔️ Use protective gear like the OutFox Field Guard to prevent foxtail pe*******on.

👉 Don’t let foxtails ruin your dog’s outdoor fun! The OutFox Field Guard offers full head and face protection, allowing your dog to enjoy nature safely. 🌿🐕

We all know dogs love to scavenge, but sometimes they surprise us with the wildest things they’ll try to eat! 🐶💬 Whether it’s that mystery snack they found on the sidewalk or something that left you absolutely speechless, we want to hear it!

🗣️ Comment below and tell us: What’s the craziest thing your dog has ever eaten? 🤔👀

We’ll go first: Last week we heard a story where someone's dog ate a toy dinosaur. No surgery was required as the dinosaur found the exit. We're pretty sure, however, that it wasn't a stegosaurus. 🦕💩

We all love walking our dogs, but it’s not without its worries! Here are the top 5 fears dog owners face and how you can prevent them to make every walk safer and more enjoyable. 💪🐕

1️⃣ Fear: Dog Running Away or Getting Loose
Prevention: Always use a secure, well-fitted leash and collar/harness. Teach reliable recall commands and stick to safe, enclosed areas for off-leash play. Regular leash training builds confidence too!

2️⃣ Fear: Encountering Aggressive Dogs
Prevention: Stay alert and avoid unfamiliar or unleashed dogs. Cross the street if needed, and use a short leash in high-traffic areas. Carry dog deterrent spray or an air horn for extra safety.

3️⃣ Fear: Dog Injured by Sharp Objects
Prevention: Check walking paths for debris or sharp objects. Booties can protect your dog's paws, and regular paw inspections post-walk help prevent injuries.

4️⃣ Fear: Dog Eating Something Toxic
Prevention: Train your dog with "leave it" and "drop it" commands. Keep them close in areas with unknown plants or food on the ground. OutFox Field Guard can also be a safe option for dogs who tend to scavenge.

5️⃣ Fear: Overheating or Dehydration
Prevention: Walk during cooler parts of the day and always carry water for both you and your dog. Take frequent breaks and watch for signs of heatstroke, such as excessive panting or drooling.

🌿 Outdoor Dangers for Dogs in Australia: How to Keep Them Safe 🇦🇺

Australia's beautiful landscapes are home to some hidden hazards for our dogs such as:
1. Foxtails & Grass Seeds – These can pe*****te a dog’s skin, nose, ears, and paws, causing painful injuries and infections.
2. Rocks & Sharp Objects – Jagged rocks, broken glass, and sharp sticks on trails can lead to cuts and injuries.
3. Trailside Trash – Discarded food, plastic wrappers, and other trash can be hazardous if ingested or stepped on.
4. Poisonous Mushrooms – Some wild mushrooms are toxic to dogs and can cause serious health issues if consumed.
5. 1080 Poison (Sodium Fluoroacetate) – A potent pesticide used for pest control in Australia, dangerous if dogs ingest baits left in the wild.
6. Insects & Spiders – Bites from venomous spiders, bees, or ants can lead to allergic reactions and other health issues.
7. Snakes – Venomous species like brown snakes and tiger snakes pose a significant threat, especially in warmer months.
8. Ticks – Bush and grass areas may harbor ticks that can transmit deadly diseases like paralysis.
9. Toxic Plants – Plants like oleander, azalea, and certain ferns can cause poisoning if eaten by dogs.

Make sure your dog stays safe with OutFox Field Guard, offering essential protection from these outdoor hazards! 🌿🐾

Top 5 Risks for Dogs in Open Fields & How to Avoid Them

Letting your dog explore open fields is a great way for them to burn energy, but it comes with some hidden risks. Here’s how to keep your pup safe:

Foxtails: These sharp seeds can lodge in your dog’s fur, nose, or paws, causing infections. Gear up with the and always check your dog after walks.

Ticks & Fleas: Tall grass can be home to pests. Use flea/tick preventatives, dress your dog in light-colored protective gear, which can make it easier to spot ticks before they latch on. And do a post-walk check to spot any hitchhikers.

Wildlife: Encounters with coyotes, snakes, or even deer can be dangerous. Keep your dog on a leash or close by in wildlife areas.

Allergens: Fields are full of pollen and plants that can trigger allergies. Rinse or wipe down your dog after each outing to keep them comfortable.

Heatstroke & Dehydration: Fields can get hot fast! Walk during cooler parts of the day and carry water to keep your dog hydrated and cool.
With the right precautions, you and your dog can safely enjoy the outdoors! 🐶🌿

The OutFox® Field Guard Story

For years, Diane enjoyed hiking with her dogs in the open spaces and parks in the Bay Area where foxtails are prevalent during much of the year; however, with their fun and adventure came the risk of dangerous foxtail injuries for her dogs.

After her dogs’ many painful experiences of getting foxtails in their eyes, ears, and noses and after numerous trips to the vet, Diane was determined to find a way to keep her dogs safe on their hikes. She knew the solution would be something that would shield her dogs’ faces—something to act as a barrier against foxtails. Using her technical design experience, she invented the OutFox® Field Guard and made it available to the public in 2010.

Top Priority - Comfort and Protection

As Diane’s top priority was to make a guard that would be as comfortable as possible for dogs, she thoughtfully designed every aspect of the Field Guard with meticulous care and detail—from the color, to the material, to the form. Her idea was to create a black mesh hood that covers and protects the dog’s entire head. She chose the color black because it is the easiest to see through while also serving as a sunshade. After a long search for the perfect material for comfort and function, she finally found a mesh that was non-abrasive and held its shape well. She placed all of the seam edges on the outside of the guard so the dog would have the smoothest side of the hood next to its head. Diane also made the guard large enough so that it would touch the dog as little as possible. An elasticized opening made it easy for owners to slip the Field Guard on and off without having to adjust it every time.
