WHY TEST THE PARENTS BEFORE BREEDING?
One of the greatest benefits of genetic testing is getting information before a litter is planned.
Testing breeding dogs ahead of time helps us understand which genetic variants each parent may carry and whether a particular pairing could increase the risk of puppies inheriting certain conditions.
That allows breeding decisions to be made BEFORE puppies are conceived.
For certain recessive conditions, knowing whether each parent is clear, a carrier or genetically at risk can completely change how a breeder evaluates a potential pairing.
The goal is simple:
Reduce avoidable genetic risk before conception whenever possible.
Testing individual puppies can also provide useful information, particularly when a parent carries or is at increased risk for a particular variant.
But testing the parents first gives breeders information they can actually use when choosing a mating.
At Hensley Homestead Dachshunds, we Embark health test our parent dogs because we want that information available BEFORE making our breeding decisions.
❤️ Test.
🧬 Understand.
❤️ Plan.
🐾 Then make informed pairing decisions.
