Earlier this week, we celebrated Dr. Donnelly’s birthday by getting him balloons that said everything except “Happy Birthday.” 🎈

Why? No reason. Absolutely none. We just enjoy keeping him on his toes. Happy Birthday, Dr. Donnelly! 🥳

Sonny always dresses to impress. He spends his days judging everyone’s snack choices and observing the world through rose-colored glasses, all while patiently waiting for someone to tell him how handsome he is.

Spoiler: they do. Constantly.

✨🐾 May the Fourth Be With You 🐾✨

A long time ago, in a galaxy (not so) far, far away...

Wallingford Vet

It is a period of celebration this May for all of the staff here, as we mark our FIFTH YEAR serving the community and their beloved pets.
During these past years, a dedicated team of veterinarians and staff have formed a powerful alliance, working tirelessly to protect the health of countless furry companions. Together, they have faced down illness, injury, and the occasional dramatic patient with the bravery of true Jedi.

But the battle is never over… from the shadows, the Empire of fleas, ticks, and heartworm continues its relentless campaign. Sith Lords of mischief and mayhem threaten peace across the galaxy.

Standing against them is a growing Rebellion of devoted pet owners and compassionate caregivers, united in one mission: to keep every pet safe, healthy, and thriving. With skill, compassion, and just a touch of the Force, the team at Wallingford Vet remains ready. Because every pet deserves a chance to be the hero of their own story!

Is your pet a Jedi or Sith? Drop a photo below and give them their best Star Wars name. We can’t wait to see! 🐶🐱

Ariel has a bit of a reputation at the clinic as the cat who schedules her appointments during nap time. And she takes those visits very seriously… by falling asleep on our scale.

Should we hire her to test out all the cat napping places?

Tracking the Impact of Heartworm Disease

• Every three years, the American Heartworm Society (AHS) gathers data on heartworm testing to understand the impact heartworm is having nationwide, as well as in specific regions. Testing data from thousands of veterinary practices and shelters is used to create a detailed map showing the average number of heartworm-positive cases per clinic.

• See the progression since 2001: https://www.heartwormsociety.org/veterinary-resources/incidence-maps

Today we pause to remember a very special member of our Wallingford Veterinary Hospital family.

Casey was more than a patient. She was a beloved companion, a loyal friend. Patients like Casey remind us that veterinary medicine is not only about care, but also about connection, trust, and the bonds we are lucky to witness every day. We are grateful to have been part of her life and for the trust her family placed in us to care for her.

Key Stages of the Heartworm Life Cycle:

• Infection via Mosquito (Intermediate Host): A mosquito bites an infected dog, ingesting microscopic, baby worms called microfilariae.

• Development Inside Mosquito: Within 10–14 days, the microfilariae develop into infective L3 larvae inside the mosquito.

• Transmission to New Host: The infected mosquito bites another dog, cat, or ferret, depositing the L3 larvae onto the skin, which then enter the body through the bite wound.

• Maturation inside the Host: The larvae migrate through the pet's tissues, molting into L4 larvae (1–3 days after infection) and eventually into immature adults (L5), reaching the pulmonary arteries about 70–90 days (2-3 months) after infection.

• Reproduction: The worms mature into adults, mate, and release new microfilariae into the bloodstream, typically 6–7 months after the initial infection.

• Lifespan: Adult heartworms can live for 5 to 7 years in dogs and 2 to 3 years in cats.

Critical Considerations:
• Testing Gap: Because the maturation process takes over 6 months, dogs infected as puppies will not test positive on heartworm tests until they are 6-7 months old.

• Prevention: Monthly preventives work by killing the L3 and L4 larvae stage before they reach the heart, usually killing worms acquired in the previous 30 days.

• Vector: Over 70 species of mosquitoes can transmit heartworm.
