Is bad behavior always just a bad attitude?? 🤔

This middle-aged gelding was seen by Dr. Demi for routine annual wellness during a visit to Moss Performance Horses . At the start of the exam, a warning came that this horse often has a crabby attitude. True to reputation, he even tried to bite while being sedated for a dental float 🙄

What was discovered after opening his mouth may tell a very different story! This gelding has a broken molar with a fragment displaced toward the roof of the mouth. Could pain from a fractured tooth be contributing to the attitude problem?!?

Good news‼️ A follow-up visit is already scheduled next week for additional diagnostics and treatment. Hopefully some relief from dental pain will also bring a happier attitude 🙏

‼️ We have an important announcement to make ‼️

After lots of discussion and consideration, our doctors have agreed that donkeys and mules represent a significant but sadly underserved portion of the equine community 🙁

To meet this need, we have decided to shift our practice focus! We will now ONLY be seeing appointments for donkeys and mules at our practice!

We look forward to serving the community in this way. Please call us soon to book your appointment for your donkey or mule!

Last week Dr. Demi and some of our EPVS crew spent a day working with Boehringer Ingelheim veterinary representatives learning tips and tricks on gastroscopes! This is the best way to look at the health of your horse’s stomach and investigate for stomach ulcers.

To take advantage of these skills, we will be offering a special on gastroscopes from February 23rd to March 6th. A gastroscope booked with Dr. Demi during this time will receive $100 off the price of the gastroscope! If you are interested in booking, please call the office at 979-324-5822

We’re very happy to welcome EPVS’ first foal of 2026! 🥳
He is a handsome sorrel Quarter Horse c**t bred to be a cutting horse. He was already showing off and loping circles around the stall this morning!
We’re very happy for his owners and look forward to all the EPVS babies we will see this season!

You’ve probably seen the chilly weather on the forecast for this weekend! ❄️🐴 We’re here with a few important management reminders for your horse!

❗️Feeding in Cold Weather
As temperatures drop, horses burn more calories just to stay warm. Increasing forage (hay) is the safest and most effective way to help them maintain body condition—fiber fermentation creates internal heat. Make sure fresh, unfrozen water is always available, as dehydration can sneak up in winter and increase colic risk.

❗️To Blanket or Not To Blanket?
Not every horse needs a blanket! Healthy horses with adequate body condition, access to shelter, and plenty of hay often do just fine without one. Blanketing may be helpful for:
• Senior horses
• Thin or hard-keeping horses
• Horses that are clipped
• Horses without adequate shelter

If you do blanket, ensure it fits properly and adjust layers as temperatures change to prevent overheating or rub sores. Be sure that your blanket is waterproof! Having a wet blanket on is worse than no blanket at all 🥶

Quick Winter Tips
✔ Check water sources daily
✔ Increase hay - NOT grain
✔ Monitor body condition regularly
✔ Reassess blanketing needs with weather swings
