Billy and Pika, our two Belgian Malinois detection dogs.

They are wrapping up their portion of a black tail deer study in Oregon today and heading east with Greg tomorrow to start a moose calf mortality study in Minnesota. The rest of the crew (two handlers and three dogs) will carry on in Oregon sniffing out black tail deer s**t through mid-June.

This is Pika. She’s a Belgian Malinois and the only female in our pack of conservation detection dogs. She’s as sweet as they come and has a habit of falling love with her handlers. As you can see in the top right photo, the feeling is mutual. She’s currently working with Moose and Billy on the Michigan Predator Prey Project, sniffing out kill sites of bear, bobcat, wolf and coyotes in the Upper Peninsula.
