Can you tell what these are? - Answer at the end!

How do we know when to start "floating" horses? Age 5? Age 10? Only if the horse starts losing weight? Well, as equine dentistry advances more every year, we, as both the veterinary community and the whole equine industry, are finding the that youngsters' mouths should be checked much earlier - as early as 6 months of age! And, then twice yearly! These c**ts and fillies even get those same sharp points on their baby teeth and brand new permanent teeth that they will get when they are adults.

In this picture, these are two baby, aka "cap", teeth that were removed from a 3 year old c**t, who was making "weird" jaw movements when eating grain. The large one is normal and it was loose and ready to come out. The small one is actually a fractured fragment from the baby tooth over a lower right premolar and it was wedged between its permanent tooth and the adjacent tooth. It took a bit of effort to get it out and was causing the irritation, like a popcorn kernel stuck between your teeth.

Especially if you are starting c**ts during the time when they are losing baby teeth and growing permanent teeth - between 1 and 5 years old - we highly recommend having their mouths checked regularly.

I will be at Dakota Veterinary Hospital doing Equine Dentals May 12-16. Call today to reserve your spot! ~ Dr Liz Bolan
