We are a Non-profit Sanctuary home for domestic hybrid and small exotic felines. Today Avalo feeds, houses and heals over 350 domestic, feral and hybrid cats.

In 2013, Michelle Donlick Altmeyer developed a section of her 16-acre horse farm to create Avalo Cat Sanctuary, a 501c3 nonprofit organization caring for sick and homeless felines. Michelle’s deep compassion and tireless dedication keep Avalo going, but it takes more than love to pay for food, electricity, supplies and vet bills. The cats are out!! Well technically speaking Marshall is out but he is hiding in this bench while Akira is still resting in her crate. The door is open so it's their choice to come and go - they now have their freedom ❤️

My friend Tina recently passed away, I had known her over 10 years. I took in her cats and I think she would be happy. These are two African Wildcats, from which domestic cats originated!

Domestic cats are indeed descended from African wildcats. Specifically, the African wildcat Felis silvestris lybica is considered the ancestor of all domestic cats. This domestication process is believed to have occurred around 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, likely in the Middle East's Fertile Crescent region.

Elaboration:
Genetic Evidence:
DNA studies consistently demonstrate that domestic cats worldwide share a strong genetic similarity with the African wildcat, confirming its role as the ancestral species.

Early Domestication:
The domestication process is believed to have begun in the Fertile Crescent, where people may have initially tolerated or even encouraged the presence of these cats around settlements for their pest control abilities.

Global Spread:
From the Middle East, domestic cats spread throughout the world, eventually reaching regions like Asia and Europe, and even later to North America.

These two precious but very scared F1 Bengals, Marshall and Akira, have arrived. They haven't had a good couple of years but when the rescue found them and contacted us their chance of a better life has started! Facilitate Rescue, Inc.

It will take them some quiet time to understand that they're safe and to settle in and just to let them be cats!

Update about the dropped off cats:

I spoke with my contacts at the shelter and they agreed to take the cats in, check them over and place them up for adoption. Should any problems arise they would come back to Avalo.

It breaks my heart to read of what you experience and I have even more grief that you had to part with your babies. Please find a way to reach out to me! I will not judge, I want to help.
