This Dressage Pyramid of training is paramount for use in your training. Having an instructor teach you how to implement each of these fundamental skills is vital to success. These things progress with continuing education and practice. They apply to all breeds and they create a foundation for the horse's physical and mental success.

Rhythm- Pick an exact speed with contact and stick with it for 5 minutes to start. The horse should hold the rhythm on its own.
Relaxation- Head down, Head down, Head down.
Connection- Contact with the bit, the horse willingly following guidance from the rein.
Impulsion- Drive energy through the seat and into the bit.
Straightness- The hands guide the head and the legs guide the body.
Collection- Lifting the back and shifting weight to the back end.
