Did you know that Koi have teeth? Do not worry they cannot bite.
The teeth they have are called Pharyngeal teeth and they are in the throat of the Koi and are used for grinding food. These teeth are made of keratin and are formed in rows or clusters depending on the Koi. Your Koi can shed their teeth throughout their lives.
Perhaps you have seen little ivory like specks at the bottom of your pond? This could be your Koi shedding their teeth, which is perfectly normal and fun to find.

Today was a fun day for me at Underwater Environments. Watching Scott frantically going through all of our Koi inventory looking for those special Koi to take to the Koi Show. With only so much room in his booth, trying to narrow it down was a bit difficult. But I am happy to say he has found a very nice representation of what we offer here at the Koi shop in Vista.
After all his trips to Japan he has acquired an excellent eye.
The Koi Show is this weekend at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Sponsored by the wonderful San Diego Koi Club. Free Admission.
