The difference between an orthotic and a prosthetic comes down to one key idea: whether the body part is still there and needs support, or missing and needs replacement.
Orthotic (Brace or Support):
An orthotic device is used when a body part is present but needs assistance to function properly.
Designed to support, align, prevent, or correct deformities or weaknesses
Commonly used for conditions like foot pain, joint instability, or neurological issues
Examples include:
Knee braces
Ankle-foot orthoses
Think of an orthotic as something that helps your body work better.
Prosthetic (Artificial Replacement)
A prosthetic device is used when a body part is missing and needs to be replaced.
Designed to replicate the function and sometimes appearance of a lost limb
Used after amputation or congenital limb differences
Examples include:
Any part of an artificial legs or arms
Think of a prosthetic as something that replaces what’s no longer there.
