๐Ÿธ Lets' talk about s*x! ... ing molts ๐Ÿ˜Š One of the members of Tarantula Talk recently commented on a post that they believe all spiderlings sold at 1" or more are probably males. I would like to have a discussion about this because it is certainly not the case.

We work with a network of breeders who seek males out, as do we, so when we are able to s*x a tarantula as male, we first offer it to our breeders and if we cannot use him, then we offer him on our website as a s*xed male. There is a demand for males as many are realizing the importance of breeding. ๐Ÿ˜ป

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ Sexing bunches of spiderling molts under a microscope takes a lot of time and patience. Most of the retailers I know do not have the time to do that. Taking care of thousands of spiderlings as well as packing and shipping orders takes priority over s*xing tiny molts. Most of the spiderlings we sell are sold before we have the opportunity to s*x their molts.

โœ…There seems to be a thought out there that a spiderling at 1" or over can be easily s*xed ventrally. This is simply not the case. I have seen well seasoned folks in the industry for decades get ventral s*xing wrong, even on juveniles and adults.

Even s*xing molts can be tricky as seen on the first photo here. Many species have male accessory organs that at first appear to be spermathecae. If you are s*xing a molt or 2 it is quite easy to think you have found a female. It is when you are s*xing dozens of the same species that you see the patterns and gain experience at knowing the difference, especially for smaller spiderlings.

So to recap, your trusted retailers are not selling small spiderlings as uns*xed knowing they are males. Most are too busy to even have the time to s*x their molts, and ventral s*xing is not always accurate even with juveniles and some adults.

We are always glad to answer any questions about this. If you want to know more about s*xing molts just check out the pinned content on Tarantula Talk. ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ We get a lot of pictures asking for help s*xing on Tarantula Talk so thought we would share this great tutorial Tom's Big Spiders put out a while back! https://tomsbigspiders.com/2015/11/08/s*xing-tarantulas-using-molts/ We do allow molt pictures posted to the group, but they need to be properly set up and clear if you want help s*xing your tarantula. ALSO โš ๏ธโš ๏ธ VERY IMPORTANT! There are times a molt may look male or female with a picture, but when you go to manipulate that molt (under a microscope if small), you see it is not what you originally thought. Some spermathecae are clear and lay flat and some parts look like spermathecae that are not, especially on certain species. ๐Ÿ˜Š

For most tarantula keepers, females are where itโ€™s at. Itโ€™s not that we donโ€™t have love for their male counterparts. In fact, some male species like Phormictopus and Pamphobeteus are more colorful โ€ฆ
